Gunsmithing tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Wow. News to me.

No. Haven't used it, but am very interested to see how it works out.

The stock trigger is not bad. I have mine adjusted to about 1.5 lbs IIRC (you have to relieve the hex screw that holds the trigger group), but there is the slightest creep that I cannot get out and I HATE creep.

I used to do my own triggers on my 1911. 1.9 lbs. NO creep. NO takeup. NO overtravel. Absolutely crisp. So my expectations are probably a little high.

I'd be extremely grateful if you could explain what you did, and to which hex key in a little more detail; I have mine down to about 2lbs -but would go to 1.5 if I could! Thanks!

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

You can modify the hex bolt that holds the trigger assembly in place (grinding the side that faces the trigger ajustment screw or turn down the inside of the ajustment screw (making it shorter)

A better fix is use a lighter spring of the same length.

If you undo the ajuster fully, you will find a short post and the spring - the post bears against the trigger sear, the spring in bettween the ajustment screw and post.

There is a chap in the states that sells lighter springs, but wont ship to the UK....yet another nonesenical PITA...

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

hi my name is Eli and this is my tikka.. sounds like an AA meting.

what i have had done by a good local gun smith is i had him do a trigger job on it. it was not replaced it was just worked to have a very smooth 3lb pull that's just what i prefer and i like to keep all of my rifles at 3lb. that way they all have the same pull weight. i also had him check the bedding he said he did a few minor things but nothing major. i bought the break and it works just fine. i also had him check the bolt for fit. again he said he did some minor work but for the most part it was pretty good. im not a gun smith and this was 4 years ago so i cant remember the specifics off hand.

her is my thoughts on my personal tikka. if i bought a tikka and switched the trigger, stock, break and the action. than why not just call tikka up and order the barrel and build the rest of the rifle around that why spend $1200 on a rife if all your going to use is the barrel. mine shoots sub MOA all day long at 100 yards.its a fun rifle to shoot out to 800 yards. if you want a custom rifle build one from the ground up. just my .02

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

My first post in the Hide. Just wanted to say thanks for all of the info on the Tikka T3. Just got my Tikka T3 CTR (Compact Tactical Rifle) in .308. Put on an eagle stock pack, Harris Bipod, Vickers padded sling and Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16x42mm mounted in Warne QD rings.
The action is like butter! Now I need some trigger time. Want to get the HSS bolt shroud next.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Not much mentioned here about barrels besides Rock Creek and Broughton... Does anybody have any more suggestions on something heavier than whats on the t3 lite? I know the stock barrel is Sako quality and pretty damn accurate, but I'm worried about barrel heat and looking for something I can run some rounds through without having to stop and cool down. And if nobody has anything else what about some approximate prices on the Rock Creek and Broughton? Any suggestions would be appreciated

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

When my barrel was done I replaced it with a 22" #5. The barrel I got is a shooter, but the company has had so many problems, I could not in good conscience recommend them.

We're about to build two more T3 Lites into tactical shooters and we're looking at Krieger and Brux. We'll probably get the one we can get faster, but the name I hear consistently from more people is Krieger.

I've heard very good things about the Shilen Select and the Douglass XX if you want a decent barrel that won't cost as much as the others.

There is no comparison between a good hand lapped match barrel and what comes stock on the Tikka.

There's a picture up a little further in this thread of my rifle, but here's a little better shot of barrel profile

IMG_0188mod.jpg

The next two will get either Med. Palma or Sendero contours with deep fluting.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Just the information I was looking for, thanks jrob... Looking at your rig is like looking into the future (hopefully!). Im on the fence whether to swap out the stock or barrel first because I cant afford both at once, but either way I'm definitely going with the Manners eventually

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

If the barrel is shooting, go with the stock. Get your shooting position solidified. You'll notice that I have the longest LOP kit (you have to look carefully, some of the spacers are painted) and a very high cheek weld. I got the rifle to fit me, not vice versa. Now I shoot a lot more consistently, because I'm more consistent in my cheekweld and eye position and not fighting the rifle to get square on the trigger.

Have Tom include pillars and a steel recoil lug (I'm pretty sure he offers this now) and bed it or have him do it. Another important step towards a consistently accurate rifle. Then when the barrel is shot out, you can go with a hand lapped match and have the action trued if you wish (not nearly as important with Tikkas as with Remington's. Depends on what accuracy you want) and you will already have a solid platform to plug it into.

I'm still waiting for one in black to match my T3 Tactical, that is also swept back with a socket in the end for Leupold tactical rings.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Socket in the end becomes a costly endeavor due to the need to either broach or mill the end of the handle. Doable of course, just that it's a cost-versus-demand scenario, where most customers wouldn't be willing to spring for the added cost.

The other things you mentioned I will definitely have.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Matt,

I'll soon be doing a build for my boy while he's in Iraq. Will need one. Mine is a custom welded piece (pic a few posts up). I'd like to get a one piece design for his. Very anxious to see what you have in mind.

Matt,

I'd be willing to pay extra for the socket, if you want to make a run of those. There must be a few people that would want that option.

Let me know the cost and your production time frame.

Thanks.

What you *really* want is a bolt knob like the one in the video in the Razor test:

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1387446

Now THAT is cool.

Quaility is excellent, really good.

I decided that I don't wanna screw on a picatinny rail on my T3 as i think it'äs stupid to make a sandwish solution when you dont have to.
As the T3 rail is the same dimension as the ones on the TRG all mounts for TRG will fit to the rail.
As I am making the most advanced tactical scopemount system I prefer to use this.
Those mounts are made in one piece iin 7075 and grabs direction on to the T3 rail. (we make em for picatinny to, but in this case it feels awkward with picatinny)

I had to lower the ejection port somewhat on the T3 as it's missplaced and the T3 throws all the spent brass right into the lower part of the ejectionport.

The TRG mounts we make had to get som extra recoillug holes in order to have it to fit the T3, a conversion that we now always make on all TRG mounts so T3 users also can use em.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Using a a Roedale rail, bolt shroud and bolt handle on my T3.
Tried a new way of laying up our T3 carbon stock and shaved off a bit of weight. This one weighs 23 oz with buttpad and 2 swivel studs up front. Makes a handy run around rifle.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Just wanted to let you guys know that Mike & Tim @ Underground Skunkworks are now doing complete package upgrades on T3's. I know that some of you guys have PM'd me about recommending a good builder to work on Tikka's. I don't think there's a better bolt gun builder in the country right now, so you're in luck that Mike Bush has decided to pick these up.

Package includes:

Face Receiver Back and prep for UGSW Tikka Recoil Lug
Locate Pins in Receiver Face for Recoil Lug
Custom Manufacture Recoil Lug (Matches Shape of Receiver)
Re-Cut Receiver Threads
Re-Cut Lug Abutments
Open Scope Base Holes to 8-40
Prep and Modify Bolt Handle to Accept UGSW Bolt Knob
Manufacture Bolt Knob
Fill In (Eliminate) and Profile Factory Recoil Lug Notch in Receiver Bottom
True and Square Bolt Face/Bolt Lugs Referencing Bolt Way in Receiver
Thread, Chamber and Crown New Barrel (Brake Optional)
Custom Fit Barreled Action to Manners Stock (The UGSW Way)
Apply Finish to Barreled Action and Stock

He just finished my .260 Rem.:

IMG_7115.jpg

IMG_7117.jpg

Normally the stock and metalwork would be painted, but I'm going to be trying my hand at Cerakote, so Mike let me take it home in the white.

Recoil lug detail:

Bad Azz muzzle brake:

Bolt knob (This is the very first one. It might get tweaked a little for positioning):

Oh, and it shoots OK too. Shot three rounds "shoot and clean" then these 25. Virgin Lapua brass, drop powder and shoot:

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Now has the following:
Manners T4A
EGW 20MOA base
HSS Bolt Knob and Shroud
Hardened steel recoil lug
Bergara 1:8 Heavy Varmint Contour Barrel threaded and capped with an invisible thread protector.

Looks like Mike and I will be discussing some T3 work this work. That looks great John.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Jeff,

You should shoot Mike a PM for a quote.

This rifle has ruined me. I'm deeply dismayed now when I shoot anything over a .3" group as I know it's me

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Best damn bolt gun on the market!!! I run my T3 Tactical 308 in the Manners stock and was one of the 1st orders +++++++ on getting one. I have heard that [email protected] in Sarasota has a bottom plate upgrade to run AI 10 rd mags. Plan on going that way once I recover for my MA-TEN build and glass.

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

In this rifle. Pic was on the previous page.

IMG_7117.jpg

For the most part I like it. I wish the well was flared a bit. Getting a mag into it can be a bit of a chore. But once seated, it feeds flawlessly.

John

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

Yeah that's a good idea. We thought it was such a good idea that early last year we started doing that actually. It's still a work in progress but we have some nice stuff and eventually we'll have all of our products plus all or most of the aftermarket Tikka and Sako stuff in the world available on our website. Is there something in particular you were looking for?
Justin

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

AI magazine compatible bottom plate upgrade likely a good item. I know myself and others jumped all over the Manners T4 stock when he started offering it and I am sure folks would like a 10 rd magazine option. Really handy for folks that run the Tikka in Tactical/Sniper matches

Re: tikka t3 tactical aftermarket upgrade thread

It seems there is quite a bit of aftermarket support in the UK and Australia, but none here. We seem to have to find little stashes of product here or there.

As a Tikka lover my self (obviously by my name)I was curious if there were others out there who love Tikkas as much as me.
