well, i finished threading and chambering the schneider m40 barrel that is going into the mcmillan A4 stock. tomorrow i am going to cut it down and thread for the Badger fte muzzle break. decisions, decisions.....20 inch?, 22, 24..... been tossing it around in my head for the last month, while i was waiting for the reamer, among other parts, and getting up the nerve to try my hand at doing all this for the first time. well, now its crunch time and i have to decide on the barrel length...its a .308, and will be shooting 168 smk's. dont really have any plans on how far i will be shooting, but the longest i can shoot is 200 yards at the range i go to.. so it really come down to aesthetics, i guess. btw, the chamber reaming was very tedious, but somehow very relaxing and kind of fun. i wasn't in any bit hurry, and just took my time. turned out really nice...if i must say so myself

To me there is no decision, if its a range gun thats staying on a bench, take the 24". If you take it for a hike then go a little shorter, less weight. A 308 is just getting comfy for flight at 200 yards.
Enjoy the machine time too

originally i was pretty sure i wanted a 20 or 22 inch. lately, i have been leaning toward the 24. you are right, the longest trek i will likely make with it is from the safe to the truck, and the truck to the shooting bench. the shorty rifles do look pretty sexy, though, i have to admit...

Re: time to make a decision...

Id like to say short barrels are for kids but real men have long barrels! Did I really say that..........
Seriously though, Im building my first AR308 and used a Lilja 24" barrel......boy is it sweet

Yep, like SDWw said, I would try it at 24" and see how you like it. If it's too bulky to carry/move, wack some off. Since it appears you are doing the work, all you are loosing is your time. Take your time and get it the way you want it.
