I know that a mid-range cost scope will be more than sufficient for my current needs. There will be opportunities where I will be able to take advantage of a better scope down the line. Is a scope a tool that the saying "better to have and not need than to need and not have" apply to?

I Have 2 vastly different scopes on 2 of my rifles. One is a NF ATACR 5x25, the other is a center point from walmart that i paid $70 for. Both scopes reach out to over 800 yards with no problem and they track just fine. That being said; it is hard to go from the amazing quality and clearity of an ATACR to a $70 walmart scope. The difference is very noticeable.
Its kinda like purchasing diamonds.. you get to choose your cut, color and clarity, Night Force is your perfect diamond from tiffany’s while walmart has yellow diamonds on sale. The yellow diamond will still get a yes on proposal day, but she really wants that blue box from tiffany’s.
At the very least... make sure your turrets match your reticle... my walmart scope has moa turrets and mil reticle and that is no fun.

Matching Turrets on a scope that tracks, will get you there, then add optical quality. Buy the best you can afford. It is cheaper to spend a little more initially then to constantly buy and trade up.

Get what you can afford. And know once you start using any of the high end scopes it is very difficult to go back to the mid level scopes and not be critical of them!

There is better glass in my future but for right now I'm getting consistent sub MOA groups out of a factory gun and a $250 Vortex Crossfire II 6-24X50 scope. I have access to several very expensive rifles with equally expensive glass but I don't shoot them any better than my cheapo first budget built gun with budget optics.
It'll be at least another 2 years before I "need" or can justify buying really good glass. I could drop $2K next week and buy a great scope but I'm certain I won't shoot any better. Things might look nicer, clearer and sharper at 600 yards but that'd be a lot of $ just for clear color corrected glass.

I've been trying to justify alpha glass for myself for a year or so now. I've nearly settled with the idea that I'm just going to run my SWFA HD 5-20 until I find something in the $1000-$1200 range that's noticeably better. Might be 2 years, might be 5 years, might be 10 years. But I have a family and bills and I can't justify $2k on a scope for something that's nothing more than a stress relief hobby for me.
I'd suggest buy the best scope you can at the best deal you can possibly find.
A good scope will outlast several rifles & if you are not caught up in what the "cool" reticle of the day is, it may last you the rest of your life.
Around the $2k range you can get some top notch scopes used, such as the S&B 5-25x56, several Nightforce models, Leupold Mark 8 and quite a few others.
I've stuck $2k scopes on sub $1k rifles without second thoughts.
What I regret, is all the "cheaper" scopes I bought over the years till I jumped up into the higher end.

Currently only using a SSHD 10X. Sold my SS 3-15. Paper at 100-200 yards with longer shots when hunting. Would like to make use of the longer ranges on the outer islands since I can actually take vacations now.
I'd say look to have about $2k and then start hunting the for sale ads here and all over like a hawk and see what you can find.
Just tell the significant other that it's a hobby that is really important to you and if you get cheap, you'll always be wanting to upgrade and it will work out more expensive in the end, rather than just getting good from the start. Also if you get a great deal on a high end scope, it will keep most of it's value for a long time.
I think you really start to split hairs above the $1,800 mark.

Im always frugal, I cant afford to be spending over 1k on every scope every couple of months. Once you get near 1k there are plenty that are serviceable though.
You can always spend more, I just want to get enough to not be wanting.
The fact that you doubled your budget in an hour makes me feel like you dont have the same constraints though.
Calling around to some of our vendors though might get you a scope thats just over 1k for just under 1k. Its worth the time to call and talk.

I agree. Unless you're a serious competitive shooter, there isn't much that a $1k scope won't do for you.
I’ve used a large spectrum of optics and for most uses the $1,500 range feels like the sweet spot to me. And, you can typically find some great deals on some lightly used models that get that down closer to $1,100.
I personally don’t see a ton of additional benefit in going above that level for the purposes you mentioned above.
How to justify it? Personally I found great deals, used them while I saved a little more then sold them and added to it. Got to gain a lot of experience on what I find valuable and what I can live without.

I bought a Leupold 3-9X , capped turret scope for $300 +/- because its green color kind of mimics the gree Redfields the Marines had on their M40s....
Turret adjustments dont even match the mil dot reticle.
Ive set it up at a 100 yard zero and will be diddling with it as little as possible.
Im forced to use reticle holds at different ranges and as a result learning way more than if I was dialing.
This rifle has become a favorite.
So favorite that I bought two more of these scopes.
One will go on a .223 version of the rifle pictured above.
The other I am contemplating to mount on a 30-06 Model 70 clone of Carlos Hathcocks rifle build documented here...

I think I bought three of these Leupolds for less than any one of my other scopes and Im loving them for just there uncomplicated, shooting fun. Had I bought standard black ones I would have spent half what the green scopes cost.
By no means am I saying these are as good as my Premier but all Im trying to express is get something you can shoot and shoot it a lot.
Dont settle, get the scope that makes your belly ache with desire but in the interim a serviceable scope with a usable reticle will get you shooting/learning.
Just left the range doing some Mspeed load confirmation, loving that rifle/scope combo.
Cant imagine what the guys in VN would have done with a mil dot instead of Accurange.
The VC/NVA literally dodged a bullet.
PS - My suggestion to go cheap is an outlier. It has a specific window of appropriateness. If you arent shooting get the best you can afford to get shooting but you need to get what you hunger for to be happy. My standard advice is settling will cost you money - you will not get your money back on your "settle" in most cases - so settle on something you can learn with.

Frugal means different things to different people. Figure out your budget and by the best you can within that budget.
For example, the scope I have recommended to people the most in the last ten years is the SWFA SS 3-9x42. It is not flashy, but it is very robust and very flexible. You already have the SS 10x HD which is a very nice design. To go up from that in terms of optomechanical quality, you will have to spend some money.
Your next logical step up is something along the lines of Athlon Cronus and Delta Stryker, if you want a large 56mm scope. If you want something a little more manageable interms of physical size, you should be lookign at different 3-18x and 3-15x designs. If you want to ask forgivenes, just get a Tangent Theta TT315M and be done with it.
Otherwise, see if you can get something like the Leupold Mark 5HD 3.6-18x44.

I've looked through a friend's $2,000 Night Force and it is nice but it doesn't mean a $300 scope is always garbage.
There are a lot of good scopes above and below the price of that Night Force.
I think it's better to figure out which is best for you, then see if you can justify it or find an affordable alternative.

If you currently are shooting with a SS10XHD you already have an optic with top tier glass as well as top tier reliability and tracking.
Beyond that it's all features man. Magnification, reticles, illumination, turret styles, you name it. You need to nail down the optic's purpose and go from there. I too had a 10xHD many moons ago. I sold it because my needs were evolving.

Mostly because of the reticle, I like the Athlon Ares BTR 4.5-27x50.
For the price that you can buy them for new, or even better used, it's my pick. I've seen them go used for $650 or less.
It's the combination of 25Y close focus, the best .2 mil tree reticle out there, good glass, 10 mil knobs with ZS and rev lines on housing, compact for it's mag range, illume, and a decent amount of elevation travel.

I just bought a like new pst gen 2 5-25 that I’m positive will make consistent hits at 1 mile..... the first PST I bought for $500 makes consistent hits at 1400 and is only held back by the 140 gr bullet it is guiding. You don’t have to spend $2k on a scope. Sure you will look cool if you do, but when the gun goes bang and 8 seconds later you hear pinnnng that extra $1300 in your pocket feels pretty nice.
If you can afford a $2k scope go for it. But with two small kids and boring crap like food and electricity to buy it’s hard for me to justify spending 75% more on something that doesn’t really do the job that much better. Im sure a S&B is nice but I bet I can take my used PST 2 and out shoot 50% of people that have them.

It'll be hard to outshoot anyone when the piece of shit PST quits on you.
Ehhh. It has worked well so far but if that did happen they would just have to wait a couple of weeks for Vortex to fix or replace it. They could use the extra time to practice.
My post was to point out that you don't have to spend $2500 to get a scope that will work fine for a hobby. If I were going to a foreign country and my life depended on the rifle sure I would splurge. However, in this case my worst possible scenario is that I have to send a scope off to be fixed or replaced and wait a couple of weeks...... Not that daunting of a risk to save almost $2k.
You don't have to start out expensive & yes there are a lot of cheap scopes that you can buy that will work quite well for you.
If you are never going to really get into high end gear and such then no problem, you can enjoy yourself plenty with a simple rifle & cheap decent scope.
However this is an addictive sport if you actually get into it in a big way & eventually you'll be wanting better and better stuff.
In my personal case, I wasted quite a bit of money and time on cheaper rifles & scopes that I thought were great till I actually first made the jump to the top tier stuff. Now buying all the cheap stuff and finding out why I wanted better was an education & I learned a lot. Much of this was before there was as much good information widely available on the internet and so some if it was just having to do your own learning.
I spent just about the equivalent of buying an S&B scope on scopes that I found out I didn't like before I bought my first S&B scope.
I barely got a fraction back of what I paid for those other scopes.
If a small budget is all someone will ever have, then try to find the best for the price.
However for those who would be able to save up over time for better stuff, I would like to offer them the opportunity to not have to pay for an expensive education in why you want better. Rather save all that money and time, benefit from years of others trying everything else under the sun out and jump straight to the best in class stuff (of whatever is the best value for the money) and not wind up taking the time and money hits on buying then selling a bunch of lower end stuff & working the way up.
Then there is also the warranty debate. Yes many companies have great warranties that will take care of things that break. But there is also the guys who want stuff that is really hard to break so that you don't have to worry about it breaking when it would really be inconvenient. (Of course after that you start moving into the the 2 is 1 and 1 is none line of thinking, and then from there, 1 to use, 1 spare and 1 you will actually use etc.).

1) ive never heard anyone say "Damn my glass is TOO good, i wish i bought the cheaper one"
2) you honestly dont need expensive glass.......you need reliable glass......and you dont need to spend $$$$ to get reliable glass.
the vast majority of my scopes are SFWA SS 10x......they are rugged, cheap, and track reliably.....you dont need 1080P clarity to shoot accurately.
if you are spending more than $3-400......chances are you are going to be just fine........but if you have cash to spend.....you wont regret getting nicer glass.

I can honestly say that in 4 years of PRS, many more than that shooting 3 Gun and some competitive local long range matches, and 40 years of big game hunting throughout the northwest, that expensive glass is not high on my list of needs. I've quite simply never been let down by the ability of my glass to discern and hit my target.
I have however experienced breakage and turret failure. So in my humble opinion based on my personal experiences, there are plenty of scopes in the $1200 give or take a little price range that will perform at that the same level as any scope at any price. They don't have that beautiful bright glass that high end optics have. But you can see and hit your target. And they have great reliability and durability.

You've obviously got more experience than I do, but IMHO, good glass has more to do with being able to see your misses and correct for them than it does just being able to see the target.
That being said, I was surprised at the amount of XTR II scopes at the King of 2 Miles event this year. Looked like a lot of folks were running Burris, which is definitely saying something.
But I do find that good glass makes it much easier to see misses. And I'm not talking about $3k+ glass. I think the $1500 glass is a good bit better than the $1k glass. And subsequently, the $1k glass is better than the $500 glass, and so on.
But I bet you have heard people say "Damn, I wish I could afford the gas to get to that match."
So many people get very very self conscious about the level of gear that they have. Remember at the end of the day long range is just a hobby. If that hobby is important to you then buy something that excites you so you'll never feel a need to upgrade and I'm certain that the nicer gear will give you far more enjoyment from the hobby. If you can't afford it then no biggie it's not a social ranking system we're all equal and the same in that we share the same interest so just buy something that works rock what you got with pride and don't be self conscious about it or you'll wind up coming across like an envious little punk.
Any scope of average optical quality will let you see your misses on dirt. There is no scope on earth that will let you see your misses when your bullet lands in vegetation or sails over a ridge.
Seeing bullet holes on paper at anything over 150 yards is a huge crapshoot that depends not only on the scope's optical quality, magnification, the colors of the target where the bullet hit, illumination on target, and a whole host of other factors. If I can't resolve bullet holes at 600 yards with a 25X Kowa spotter, it is highly unlikely that your rifle scope (which is not an observation device, but a gunsight) isn't going to either no matter how much you paid for it. That's not my humble opinion, but my humble experience.
If I have to pick between outstanding mechanicals and excellent glass, I'll pay for the mechanicals first.

I look for tracking, reliability, and a decent eye box, then for some reason turret quality. I just don’t think I could get over mushy turrets and hash marks that didnt exactly line up. I know it’s not the most important quality to base decisions.
I agree, but you don’t always have to make that choice. Look at the Burris XTR (which my original post was replying to) versus SWFA HD. Both have good mechanics. One has considerably better glass than the other and the other has more features. The post I was replying to simply stated that as long as you could see the target, the glass was adequate and everything else should be more important. I offered a different viewpoint. Just because glass is good enough to see the target doesn’t mean it’s good enough to see misses easily, and that’s a much bigger deal to most LR shooters than having a zero stop or illumination. JMHO
In my situation, with old eyes, having great glass really helps spot misses, and the main reason I've stayed with S&B as my #1 choice of match scopes on the long range centerfires.
I can get away with cheaper scopes on the air rifles and 22 rimfires because I can see misses in the dirt easier, being at closer distances.
Right here on Sniper's hide is a good place to start, in the optics for sale section. I've bought more scopes off here than I should have, just too many good deals.
You can also check out some of the sponsors such as Mile High, EuroOptic, Liberty Optics, Camera Land NY and such. Sometimes they run some crazy specials where new units are nearly the same price as used.
If you have time to hunt for a month or two, you can usually come up with some really good deals.
The best time for deals tends to be from May through November when folks are short on cash. Some of the Vendors run good holiday deals, but often the off season deals are even better.
If you're are fortunate there are some folks close by that have various versions of potential scope choices.
Having a few/several to finger and shoot with will help.
If not try and attend a local/regional match.
Most anything should/will be on hand.
All of the shooters I've encountered are always happy to let a guy checkout their glass.
