I got my butt kicked by crossfit this morning, spent six hours on the range shooting without paying for the ammo.

Then I got the call from my FFL that my AE MkII had arrived.

As soon as our brass was policed I rushed over and picked it up. My wife calls it my "mail order bride".

Unfortunately the Razor didn't make it today. Hopefully it will show up tomorrow so I can get it mounted up for a run in on my days off.

Sorry for the picture quality. I am still learning the new camera and I was just excited to get a temp scope mounted for some dry-fire.

Jonathan at SRT was great to deal with and got me this rifle crazy fast.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

I keep clicking this link, Lonewolf, thats a beauty of a rifle, after seeing those pics I already started a little fund to save for mine.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Terrific, looking forward to seeing what you can do with it. I've got a feeling you are going to impress us.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Congratulations!! Lucky you, such a great rifle, can't wait to see what you can do with it and please do post reviews or range time reports!!

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

congrats on your new bride.your going to love her for sure.but you have a top shelf set of eyes on some thing else dont you(the USO)? a bride like this needs similar glass and the same color to boot.start eating the ramen noodles and get all the ot you can while still being a good dad to the kids and your other "wife".

It'll be something to use while USO makes you a real scope

The only thing that keeps me from being completely green with envy is that the AI's don't fit me too well. Those MKII's are SLICK!!

Now you're just trying to hurt our feelings

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Oh I know. But anytime someone says AI all I can think is $$$

Granted thats mostly from the AW, but its hard sticker shock to get past and introduce to the bruised and battered savings account.

Good thing rifles, unlike marriage, can be sold off when you realize you want something else after a few years.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

They are expensive and I have been scrimping for awhile.

I could have squeezed an extra couple of matches in if I just had some work done to my 700, but then it still wouldn't be an AI.

I went this route for a couple reasons. The first was the AI reputation for reliability even in the "low end" AE. The second was the feel of it. The lock up of the bolt and of the chassis. Everything feels "precise" but you know it's still got room for dirt.

Lastly I have been watching the AI's kick butt at matches. I have only had this rifle for a couple of days, but unless it really doesn't perform at the range, I don't see myself needing to "upgrade" anytime soon.

I just need to save for an AWM to put in the arsenal for the "long" game.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Great to see you like it

My AE has been horribly neglected lately..I haven't been able to get to the range in the past two weeks to put any rounds downrange, and it's probably going to still be another two weeks before I can shoot again.

I'll have to find some time to get out there and fix that problem...

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

I don't relish the day that I'm going to be sparked with the notion that my situation dictates a need for more than a beefed up sporting rifle.

Thats the nice part about cutting to the chase and getting the best, that day of wanting something better never comes.

Congrats!

Edit to add: Sorry for being awfully redundant in my posts, new gun fever must be contagious through the screen.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Remember,

AW barrels fit on the AE.

PIC rail will remove and spin 180deg for different mount distances (fore/aft).

Keep us in the loop on the 'trial runs'!

If I weren't still on the short end of the stick financially, I would love to talk Tom Manners into machining a mini chassis to shoehorn an AEII action into a T4A-I think that would be the pefect setup after trying everything I have up to this point.

Actually, an AEII with a couple different barrels would probably have me retrain my grip. I've has 3 AICS's trying to like them is the only reason I'd be leery of getting one (an AEII).

They are, which means that the AW can fit on the AE, but not vice versa.

Good deal. Lookin' forward to hearing what you have to say about your range session... rifle and scope!

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Looking forward to an unbiased comparison of scopes. Your USO compared to your new Razor.
And yes, they should be compared, the RAzor is 2000 bucks.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

did you ever consider getting a TRG?

ive never had any experience with either, just wondering if it was ever a consideration, and if so why you went with the AE.

lookin forward to a range report..and pics with the razor mounted up

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

I considered a TRG very briefly. It may sound like a very small thing but the magazine system was part of what caused me to go AI. Most of the competitions I have gone to, the AICS magazines are the most prevalent. This means I will have the ability to help someone else out, or they me if I have a magazine problem. (those things do get messed up when dropped, stepped on, filled with mud, etc.

The other was the overwhelming support from the AI dealers here in the US. I just don't see the same thing from TRG. I am sure they are a fine weapon, just not my choice.

I got 55 rounds downrange on the AE today. The rings Vortex sent me are too low. I have to change my cheek weld considerably from what I normally use. Nevertheless I was able to lay down some nice groups with 168gr Federal Gold Metal Match that I had on hand. The AI does not like the 175gr hand loads that I was using for my 700 (175smk, 43gr RE15, Fed FL Brass, CCI Primers). I am betting it's a neck tension issue since some of those cases felt different on the press. I am going to try to pick up some other varieties of factory match ammo and run them all on the same day so we can get a better idea.

I will say that zeroing the Razor is EXTREMELY easy. Much easier than the EREK on the USO. However they do different things. I have one issue that I need to talk to Vortex about on this scope, but it's a VERY small issue. I didn't think I would like the open reticle at first, but it works well on some of the targets I was using. Hopefully things will stay slow tonight and I can check out the low-light performance of the scope.

I will try to get some "side by side" from the USO and the Razor with the camera set at the same shutter and aperture. It's supposed to pour tomorrow, so while I don't mind shooting rifles in the rain, I prefer not to get my DSLR out in it.

Here are five, five shot groups. All fired in a row. No cooldown for the rifle. All were magazine fed. You can tell which ones I was rushing. I was trying to knock this out before work and there were people asking me all kinds of questions about the rifle.

DPP_0004_text.jpg

This was group three, four and five as I was trying to fine tune the zero.

DPP_0003_text.jpg

This was one and two. The first group I dialed high to attempt to use the target the way it was designed. I really didn't like that. I measured the distance with the reticle in the Razor and dialed what I thought I needed to get into the circle. I am going to do a tracking test on a later trip to see if that was my error or if there was a problem. I am betting that I am at fault.

Here is all five groups as they were stapled up with no editing.

DPP_0002.jpg

The group sizes were as follows according to "On Target"

0.811" (.775 MOA)
0.378" (.361 MOA)
0.441" (.442 MOA)
0.876" (.769 MOA)
0.425" (.406 MOA)

Average: 0.586" (.551 MOA)

I don't believe these are indicitive of the rifle's performance. I think they are demonstrative of what I am capable of when I am hurrying.

For the first thirty rounds (five used to zero) out of this rifle I am duly impressed. Once I get a baseline for accuracy we will start the real evaluation.

After I got done with the groups and was out of FGMM I ran some speed drills with my 175gr loads. While the rifle did not like them, they were definitely minute of steel and the bolt throw on the AE is great. I will be getting some video a bit later on.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

You have the exact configuration that I want. I just keep debating back in forth over the M2008 in the 2.0 AICS. Especially since there is one right now in the exchange. I would say for a first day out averaging .586" is not bad. Did you do any break in of the barrel or just have at it? Congrats on the rifle. I am fully jealous hopefully I can come to a decision soon.

Re: Today was a good day...AE arrived

Very nice rifle! I would be interested to know what velocities it produces with 175 factory match in the 20" barrel. A friend has an AW that gets the same velocity out of his 20" barrel that I get out of my AE 24" bbl.
