Seems these folks don’t give up. I think I must have been one of the very first to get these text messages…Pay now or else. When the date passed, the messages went away.

Well today I got another one. My toll with “EZ Pay” still needs to be paid

Messages come from an extended number so I checked it out.

Seems awfully strange that the Florida DOT Collects its tolls in the PHILIPPINES? :D.

I was traveling toll roads around Orlando on Thursday and the electronic signs all said, “Do not respond to text messages about tolls!” Prior to that, I had received a few of those texts, but ignored them out of hand. First off, I had a problem with my transponder once and all communications are by email unless you call them yourself.

Secondly, the texts I received were from obvious scam numbers.

Have received a bunch of the toll road scam texts. Most on a lesser used phone.

Got an e-mail today from "PayPal security" asking about a questionable attempted purchase of some fraction of a bitcoin ($6-700 worth). To click some link to a docusign to approve or decline it...

Notable: don't have a PayPal linked to that e-mail.

Sender "PayPal security" expanded to some individual yahoo.

These scumbags wouldn't be doing scumbag shit if they didn't make money..

Nowadays, I don’t click on any links included in texts o emails unless I’ve initiated them. If I’m curious about something, I go directly to the website of a company or vendor that is referenced.
Problem was/is, the Florida DOT is impossible to access regarding tolls unless you have a ticket number. I spent an entire morning in early February trying to access them to enquire if this toll request was legitimate. (Didn’t open it, wanted to find out if it was real before I did)

I finally wrote the governor’s office and issue a terse complaint out of frustration. Never heard back.

You have to go directly to either EZPass or Sunpass websites to do that. Though, the lack of an invoice number should have been your first clue.

Never found that, and being in Florida, we did not have access to our mail in Louisiana. Anyway, they changed tactics today, used a person’s name and actually named EZ Pass. As always, if I don’t recognize the text sender, I don’t open.

Il give you a better one. My state is known for their toll shenanigans

They sent me a toll ticket/ bill. To an entity that was dissolved in 1998. And never had a vehicle registered to it.

Wasn’t some scammer. Letter came from the state.

They need something

"this note is legal tender for all debts public and private" always wondered whether refusing cash might be a fed offense? yes my state is corrupt like all the others. just a bit less? putting in elect tolls and pay by plate allowed big $ for the digital elite and a lot of opportunity for money laundering.
the FL lottery is a huge chance to launder $ and pay off political debts. digital also makes it possible to put gov workers out of work-not necessarily a bad thing,but...
last time i talked to sun pass the op was not a native speaker FS.

Yeah, I get all kinds of scams through email and some others via text. I just ignore them and delete the emails. i know they're scams because 90+% of the time, they are using one of my emails that I would never use for such a purpose. Since I have my own domain, I can create as many email addresses as I want. And I usually create one for any new merchant relationship that I initiate. It's one of the ways I know my emails are being spammed and sent to others.

I just ignore/delete them.

The toll roads are rife for skimming profits and lining pockets of those on the board. Every few years, media gets on them and they fire all of the board and replace them with new players after the graft is uncovered. Then the cycle starts over again.

When they first started the Greenway, SR417 on the east side of Orlando, the selling point for tolls was to fund the road construction and there was a promise that in 5-7 years tolls would be removed. Hah! Fat chance. Too much untracked revenue to give up. Nobody’s going to do that.

yea and the head of sun pass is an appointed job with a huge salary. big payback/laundering tool. hate to admit it. i love Desantis but he is a politician,so,dirty by definition. he just seems to know what to do to stay powerful and important to middle class conservatives.

And at the same time has succeeded in turning a State that was in trouble into a powerhouse of commerce. A success story, albeit with its warts.

I think it’s less skimming and more mass sending. I’m in Wyoming and got one of the texts a week or something ago. Delete, mark as spam…
This. Most of this type of spamming, much like what happens here on SH when they can, is about volume. These are sent out by the millions by computer robo dialers using lists generated over years of online crawling and skimming. It’s organized crime by various state and wealthy criminal actors.

These aren’t usually the work of a college kid or bored housewife.

I saw a local news story on that. First, the NTTA, in our case, does not text you about unpaid fees. My boss has received one even though our NTTA account automatically draws from our company credit card.

No toll authority does to my knowledge. Plus, just look at the address on the link included in these texts. These are not .gov generated texts. Just people using VpNs.

Yeah, and the advice in the story was to log into your tollway authority account to see what charges you actually have. Some years ago, I knew people would prepay. But it has become easier for many people to auto-draft.

i forget the basics, but the news was showing someone that got scammed on something. this idiot somehow bought and handed over actual gold to satisfy the supposed ticket, fine or whatever. i mean, how friggin naive, insane or whatever do you have to be to go and buy gold and then hand it over to someone, esp at some random place and not some govt offices...

on a possibly related note, also saw a news bite where a florida county sheriff had someone extradited from NY or NJ and read them the riot act at the arriving airport for scamming a FL senior citizen. pretty friggin cool.

Some MOFO in Dallas area named Larry somehow used my phone on voter registration, Lowes, etc.

Not sure how to even address this one; I get all sorts of liberal shit to vote for commie 1 or 2, unpaid tolls (probably real in this case), etc.

I had an issue most of last year wherein some female must have signed up for health insurance quotes and fumble-fingered her phone number. So I started getting tons of texts offering health insurance quotes and there was literally nothing I could do about it except delete them. Sometimes 15-20 per day. I think her name was Bandi or something.

My text came back undelivered. Talk about disapoimted.
@Dead Eye Dick if you think my text response was rough, you would really be shocked when a scammer calls me from jamaica or india.
My favorite is the one from jamaica that claims to be publishers clearing house, and wants me to go to my local store and get a prepaid credit card. Don't ever call them back....this is how i found out they are in jamaica. Bastards cost me $20.....kinda worth it. Boy did i piss them off.

NO, not your text, it’s that they actually had the gall to ask if you wanted the messages renewed. How absolutely stupid can they be. No, you were fine.

“If you change your mind”. That is absolutely crazy. These people need a brain upgrade :D.

Has anyone figured out how they linked your license plate to your phone number?
Maybe your phone is tracking you through Google maps or some other apps that are hacked?
Um, the scammers just spam this message to all numbers in their database, whether they have a car or drive on toll roads or not. It’s a wide net they cast…
