Suppressors Top 3 things to know/remember/utilize when owning a suppressor

I have taken my first step into owning a suppressor. Got a can on order and will be starting the paperwork here shortly. I am on deployment so it will be a nice gift to myself when I get back (wanted a Saker but went with the AAC 762 SD for my first one).

Here is my question to you guys who have been using them:

what are your top three things to remember/know/practice etc when using, maintaining, and fielding a suppressor? The more research I do the more I am liking the idea of one but there has to be some unmentioned "ins and outs" of owning one of these guys. Your tutelage and advice is much appreciated.

OH... Going to be shot out of a Remington 700 in 308, match ammo to start, and I will be reloading down the road.

1. Never shoot without it
2. Give your buddies crap that don't shoot with one
3. Be responsible

Just giving ya a hard time. I don't own the can you have but I'd say:

1. Education others
2. Make sure your paperwork is up to date (form20s if you move)
3. Make sure you never carry your original stamp around with you (might lose or damage it. The certified copies aren't as unique)
4. Resist the urge to touch the can after shooting with it. These suckers heat up QUICK!

1) Wherever the suppressor goes, the copy of your paperwork goes, Too. NO Exceptions. (alot of us store redundant copies in range bags, cleaning kits, wallets, etc)
2) Make sure the barrels are threaded properly (indexed off bore centerline, etc).
3) Every mag or so, check that it isn't unscrewing/loosening (could cause a baffle-strike eventually), so bring an oven mitt (or something specifically designed to be sexier)

Special Bonus answers!!:
4) Be knowledgable about the laws, and the Physics, so you can humbly educate others as necessary.
5) As already pointed out, start saving for your next one, and the one after that...

and....

don't shoot 22 thru one that doesn't come apart and isn't 22 specific (for your future purchases)

buy good cans, not cheap ones. i went the budget route for my first 2, and here i am 2.5 years later, twice the money spent and still waiting for what i really wanted

buy in stock, and in state (for your future purchases)

be prepared to answer stupid questions, like:
WTF do you need that for?
are you some kind of hitman?

get your buddies to spend their money on them too

soon, you'll be buying cans, and THEN looking for a gun to put it on!

also going to give you a hard time....you should have bought a Surefire....but maybe next time. They ARE worth the $$. And yes...you will buy another....I own several. ..thought my first was my only. ...but years and $$$$$$$$ later I'm broke and suppressed.

-Start saving for your next can.
-You can tell yourself that you can just buy the .45 can or that .30 cal can, etc... and all of your needs will be covered. Truth is you can never have enough cans.
-Do some research, i.e. go out and shoot some from various manufacturers when you want to purchase your next can. Don't get all stuck on one manufacturer only as you may overlook a certain can that may offer better specs or be more applicable for your use.
-Always keep a copy of the stamp with you.
-Understand the NFA process so you can properly educate people who have questions when they come up to you at the range. Don't go around spreading misinformation like you hear spewing from the mouths of people inside of gun stores everywhere.
-Keep a silicone pot holder with you for if/when you need to handle a hot can. They get nice and hot faster than you would think.
-Still wear some form of hearing protection, once it is gone, it is gone. You are still exposing yourself to loud noises which will have a cumulative effect on your hearing later on in life. This is especially important if you are shooting steel with pistol as the impact can be quite loud still.


*Towards SilentG21: Seriously man, there are other cans out there besides Surefire, especially for the money. There's no Surefire product I'd place above and beyond other offerings out there, they are overpriced for what they are. Unless you have experience actually shooting cans from all of the other major manufacturers how can you say that they are worth the money?

Surefire came highly recommended but I didnt have the budget for it. Next can is already chosen: SilencerCo Saker (because of the solid mount and good performance... plus full auto rated). I just didnt have the 1200+ to throw at it on top of building the rifle.

I know this is more of a budget suppressor but it comes from a good lineage and is a good place to start. I will learn all the ins, outs, pros, and cons on this guy before I make my next purchase. Still need to start my trust... but I am stuck in a desert for another X amount of months... FML

Good luck on your purchase kapp. Yes I am biased when it comes to brands of cans...but I HAVE shot many different makers silencers and in the end I still think Surefire comes out on top when it comes to reliability and longevity. Their mounting system is top notch and you can take it to hell and back with no problems. I wanted the best....I researched over and over again....and could not be happier with the extra cash I spent on my Surefire. Oh...and yes they ARE worth the $$$

A Can for Every Occasion

Yes, a can for every gun. I have a log book for the can and the gun that stay paired. Impact Data Books are what I use. Adding to the advice that you keep a copy of the stamp in your range bag, go to Staples and have them reduce your paperwork by 50%, laminate it (to keep it 2-sided you may have to tape a copy of the front and back together), and then keep a 2nd full size copy in a separate safe location. I did that x2. It will give you some peace of mind and will make for easy access should the need arise.

Introducing new shooters is much easier with a can. I am now able to shoot on a piece of land where I had stopped out of consideration for the neighbors. It's an older retired couple and now that they know what a can is the missus has prodded her husband to get one. Suppressor diplomacy can go a long way. And YES, start saving for your next can. Starting with a MK13-SD a few years ago I have always had at least 1 in the works. Right now I have 4 in jail.

What barrel you have on the AI stock? I opted for the suppressor over the AI/XLR Industry stocks I wanted. Figure I cant sell the Hogue stock on the 700 for shit so I might as well beat on it, paint it, and try silly stuff before I invest in another chassis.

It's a 700 AAC-SD in 300 Blackout cut back with a Brakeout mount pin and welded to bring it up to 16", and a 762-SDN-6 on the end. There is plenty of room for a heavier contoured barrel.

Was on the fence about a can for a very long time. I agee with everyone here. Start saving for the next one. I have three now and there will definately be more in my future. Shooting is damn fun I couldn't believe it could get better. Now it has, I am suppressed.

how far do you plan to shoot? i have a 20" 308 pushing FGMM 168 at only 2550fps. it falls on it's face past 750yds.

i have a 16" 308 as well, but i haven't really shot it yet. i got it sighted in for hunting at 100yds and that's all. so i can't comment on the effective there.

I dont plan to go beyond 700yds. There is not much room where I am at currently where I can stretch the legs very much.

If I can hit steel at 700yds with a 16" barrel i'll be completely happy.

do some research at what yardage a 308 goes subsonic, then that will be your limit. i also think the 175s don't tumble as much when they slow down.
