Training rifle recommendations

I just purchased a barrett 98b but before I fire a single round I want to spend some time practicing the fundamentals I am learning on this board.

I've settled on a CZ bolt action 22, but need some help in deciding which one. I plan to choose from one of the following.

452 silhouette
452 style (like the nickel finish, any problems?)
452 American 16" threaded
452 Varmit
455 American

I would really appreciate some input and also a recommendation for a good scope. I have the p4f reticle in my S&B on the barrett. A sub $250 dollar scope would be ideal since I will probably not be shooting much over 100 yards, unless you guys have some strong feelings otherwise.

You may want to pose this question in the rimfire section---probably get a lot more responses.

I was in your situation a few months back and ended up with a CZ 452 Varmint that I've been very happy with. There are a guys here who know a lot more about rimfires than I do, but I sure like my Varmint TH. For a scope, it depends if you want mildot or not, but a Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9X40 can be had for $200 from Cabelas online (no mildot reticle). IMO the 4200 is a good deal at that price. I agree on the bushnell! Never had a CZ but I am ordering a Mark II savage tactical. Pretty nice gun for the money.

I have a CZ varmint, with this scope....
3-10x40 Mil/Mil

Mil/Mil , dependable knobs, its been great.....

Lowlight has a great video review of this scope here on the Hide somewhere....

I know a lot of guys go the rimfire route and that is not a bad thing. You might want to consider a .223. Ammo is still cheap enough to practice with a lot, you can stretch it out to 800 yards with ease and beyond with the right twist and ammo and even run it in a match or two. It will teach you a lot with the wind as well.

I like the CZ's and would go with the one that feels better to you.

What would a budget 223 cost? Give me a recommendation.

A few that would come to mind would be the Remington 700P and SPS Tactical. Savage is also making a couple rifles in .223 as well. What you want to look for is the faster twist so you can shoot the heavier bullets (1-9).

I shoot my .223 all the time now - my rimfire has not been shot is a couple years for training.

if you can swing a barret and s&b....shouldn't be an issue to swing a .223......................just sayin

and just buy a sphur or near mount...and run the same scope on both rifles, that way you can put more money into the .223

I think a .223 is the way to go too. Any Remington or Savage factory offerings would fit the bill. I bought a used Rem 700 factory rifle in .223 for $400 used off Gunbroker last year. That was a really good deal so I snagged it up. Glad I did.

That would be no problem....if I hadn't just bought a barrett and a Schmidt & Bender. Do you realize how hard it was to get that through commitee?
