TRG-22 in .260 Rem loads

The Euro Optic .260 TRGs are shipping now. I expect mine within a few days and I know several other Hide members have them on the way as well.

Since these are the first TRGs to be chambered from the factory in .260, I figured we could all benefit from sharing load development data and results. I know that all rifles vary somewhat, even within the same make and model, but a load that works well in one has a good chance of working well in others and visa versa. Hopefully, this will allow us all to save some time, money and barrel wear.

As soon as I get started, I will post results in this thread. If others do the same, we should have a nice little database built up in no time.

Sounds like a plan. Mine shipped today, have some initial test loads ready to go based on 260 data found here. If it shoot's like my 22 and 42 load development should be a walk in the park.

Ok, here are some preliminary results. All shooting was done at 100 yds off a bench with sandbags. Temps were mid 80s, wind was 10 to 15 mph. Unfortunately, I do not have a chronograph, so I don't have velocities or speed deviations.

123gr Scenar, H-4350, new Remington brass, CCI 200 primer, 2.890 COL (.010 off lands). Basic case prep; no sorting of brass or bullets. Tried 3 different loads:
1. 44.0 H-4350 - Groups were just over 1/2"
2. 44.5 H-4350 - Had one flyer that opened up the group to .680", but the other 4 shots grouped at .408".
3. 45.0 H-4350 - Decent load, but not quite as good as the other two. Grouped just over 1/2"

Overall, I was not greatly impressed with this combination. I may try with a different powder and see how it does.

139 Scenar, H-4350, new Remington brass, CCI 200 primer, 2.883 COL (.010 off lands). Basic case prep; no sorting of brass or bullets. Tried 6 different loads:.

139gr Scenar
1. 41.5 H-4350 - Excellent accuracy. 5 shot group was .572" with a non-called flyer. Other 4 shots grouped .307" and a 3 shot group of .149".
2. 42.0 H-4350 - Also very good, but not quite as tight as the first. Grouped .529".
3. 42.5 H-4350 - Another good laod. .586" 5 shots with non-called flyer, other 4 shots grouped .383" and 3 shots at .195".
4. 43.0 H-4350 - Group opened up here quite a bit to jst under 1". Still sub MOA, but just barely.
5. 43.5 H-4350 - Best group! 5 Shot was .572" with called flyer, other 4 shots grouped .213".
5. 44.0 H-4350 - Opened up again to .793".

Overall, the 139gr bullets did much better than the 123s ( not surprising, considering the 1:8 twist).

I'm not sure if it matters or not, but none of the above shooting was done with a muzzle brake. If anyone has tried identical loads with and without a brake, I would be very interested in hearing the results.

Forgot to mention, no signs of high pressure on any of the above listed loads. I am tempted to try going a little hotter than 44.0gr with the 139 Scenars. Has anyone found a good accuracy node above 44.0?

Thanks for the topic and info so far Lakeway. My TRG-22 .260 will be coming in when the green batch arrives. Could you please measure the outside diameter of the necks on your fired cases for us? It would be interesting to know the neck diameter of the reamer Sako used in these. Also, are you able to touch the lands and still get any of the seated rounds to fit into the magazine? This will give us an indication on how they are throated. If you have a Stoney Point gauge (now Hornady Lock and Load) some OAL measurements would help as well.

Hornady OAL guage. Very good tool.

I'll be hitting the range again tomorrow to try out 123gr Scenars with RL-19. I wasn't thrilled with the reults I got using H-4350 with this bullet.

I tried out the 123gr Scenars with RL-19 toaday. Results were decent, but not great. I was getting some real tight 3 shot groups, but best 5 shot was .561, average was mid .6s.

I tried 4 different charges; 46.5, 47.0. 47.5 and 48.0. Best results were 46.5 and 48.0. Common theme seemed to be 3 tight, then 2 a little spread out. RL-19 seems more prone to flyers than H4350.

I do have a box of 120gr A-max that I plan to try out. But since my testing so far indicates that my rifle prefers the heavier bullets, I probably won't be buying any more lighter bullets. I plan to try out the Sierra 142s and the A-max 140s since they are considerably less expensive than the Lapuas.

The overwhelming consensus seems to be that H4350 and H4831 are the best powdwers for the .260. So I will probably limit my testing to these powders.

However, I do have a good supply of IMR4350 and have had good results with this powder on some of my other rifles, including 6mm Remington, 25-06 and 25 wssm. I haven't heard of anyone on this forum using IMR4350 for the .260, but I am curious to see how it performs. Maybe I will give it a try at some point.

If .293" is correct forget about running the new Lapua brass in the Sako's with out neck turning, loaded they run .294". I have my doubt's on necked down 7mm/08 Winchester and necked up Lapua 243 in the rifles. BS is what it is.

So how about this question, does a "new" bullet fit into the mouth of a fired case?
I was checking my .308 RP brass, fired in my TRG 22 and they opened up about .004.

Spring back understood but I doubt more than .001", I hope I'm wrong. If it is .294 that is what my loaded rounds measure and if .295 .001" isn't going to cut it. My 260 made it in this ship but due to damaged stock I will not have it until who knows when, the wait goes on. I'm not loading the remainder of my Lapua until I can get something definitive and I seriously doubt Beretta/Sako will offer up any info.

FB, EO told me stock was dinged/scratched and unacceptable was advised new stock coming. Was told 2 weeks, mine was desert digi I imagine it will be in with green's that did not make the last boat. Agree reamer print would end speculation, even a verbal would work. I will e-mail EO and try and get some info. I'm pretty sure Alex and Jason keep an eye on the board maybe they will/can chime in.

I just sent EO an e-mail requesting reamer neck dimension, hopefully I get a response.

Loaded a few Berger 140s in Lapua 260 brass at an OAL of 2.945" with 43.5gr H4350. Was windy but able to manage a 200yd group that had 3 touching and two other flyers that opened the group up to about 1". I don't have all the fancy measuring stuff but didn't see any rifling engraving on the bullets, so they are not touching the lands and no flattened primers or extractor marks. Velocity was a little lower than expected <2750fps so going to move up to move up to 44.0 grains and see what happens. Also, was expecting a 26" barrel, but with the lower velocity I checked and found a 24" barrel on mine. Does everyone else have the shorter barrel?

I just ordered some 140gr Bergers today. I have had very good results with their bullets in some other rifles I have, so I'm eager to try them out.

Did you have to turn the necks on the Lapua brass? Someone mentioned earlier that this might be necessary considering our rifle chambers were reamed with a pretty tight neck tolerance.

I just measured my barrel and it's exactly 24.75" from were the barrel meets the receiver to the muzzel. Out of curiousity, I also measured my Cooper M22 which also is supposed to have a 26" barrel and it measured 25.25". I notice the TRG barrel appears to screw deeper into the receiver than my Cooper.

I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I'm not sure of the proper method of measuring barrel length. Does barrel length include the portion that threads into the receiver? If it does, than that would explain it.

I asked about the correct way to measure barrel lenth in the gunsmithing section and got a quick answer. The correct measurement is from the breach to the muzzle. Easy was to check this is to insert a cleaning rod into the barrel from the muzzle end with the bolt closed. When the rods stops at the bolt face, mark the spot on the rod where it exits the muzzle. Measure this and you have your correct barrel length.

I just measured this way on my TRG and got exactly 26".

KTM, an add to Lakeway's question's, will a bullet drop in a fired Lapua case? 155.5 Berger's are my bullet of choice in my 22. I have a box of their 6.5 140 BTLR's just sitting there waiting, not patiently though !

Dropped the cleaning rod into the barrel and found it to be 26", the barrel must really go into the receiver a long way but still at least a couple of inches shorter than my TRG-42.

For brass, I used new Lapua 260 brass. They were of consistent length and I did not turn the necks, trim, weigh, etc. A bullet drops into a fired case and the inside measurement according to my crappy calipers is .265" and outside .298"

Going out of town for a few days, but hope to get to the range one evening and give the 44.0gr load a test.

Yes, thanks for this info. Bad news is now I have to buy some Lapua cases to get a better chamber fit.... I was planning on using necked down Win 7mm/08 brass.

Made it to the range for a quick test with the 44.0gr. H4350 and Berger 140 grain LR Match HP. Shortened the overall length a little to 2.930" and shot 3 groups of 5 at 200 yards. Velocity averaged 2780fps, still a little lower than I would like but no pressure signs yet. My first group was a nice 1.25" cluster and the next two groups had 4 shots clustered in 1.5" with a flyer in each opening up to about 2". The flyers were probably my fault as I was up a little too late the evening before and spent the morning on an airplane. I have some moly 142gr SMK that I may give a try next.

I just got a box of Berger 140s today, but not sure when I'll get a chance to try them out. I'll post results when I do.

I'll be shooting in a 600yd F-class match tomorrow and will be using my TRG. Load will be once fired remington brass, neck sized only, CCI 200 primer, 43.5gr H4350, 139gr Scenar. This load performed well at 100yds. Time to see how it does at mid-range.

I don't know if you have access to AA powders, but I loaded up 600 rounds using AA-4350, for a buddy's Surgeon/AICS/Rock/Jewell stick a couple of years back and it worked pretty well.

It's a longer stick, so it doesn't meter too well, but it's pretty close to H-4350, probably a bit cheaper too.

Made another trip to the range today and tried out some IMR4350. I don't see very many (if any) of the .260 guys using this powder and I was wondering why. I have had excellent results with it with several other chamberings including 6mm remington, 25-06, 25 wssm.

Anyway, here are the results:

Rifle: TRG-22, .260 Remington, used the muzzle brake for the first time today.

Conditions:
mid 70s, humid with light to moderate rain for most of the session.

123gr Scenar, remington brass, cci200 primer, 2.880 OAL (.020 off lands)
- 42.4gr IMR4350: Excellent accuracy! .522" 5 shot group with uncalled flyer. 4 shots w/o flyer grouped .222" and 3 shot group was .114"
- 42.7gr IMR4350: Also very good. .794" with called flyer, .308" 4 shout group w/o flyer, .255" 3 shot group
- 43.0gr IMR4350: Outstanding! .359" 5 shot group, .274" 4 shot, .177" 3 shot

120gr Amax, remington brass, cci200 primer, 2.806 OAL (.016 off lands)
- I tried 4 different powder loads from 42.4gr to 43.3gr of IMR4350. 43.3 grouped the best; .592 5 shots. The others were not quite as good and overall, IMR4350 and Scenars seemed to work much better.

Overall, IMR4350 seemed noticeably more accurate than H4350 with the 123gr Scenars. However, I did use my muzzle brake today and did not when I shot the H4350 loads. Has anyone seen a difference in accuracy that they can attribute to the use of a muzzle brake? Also, I seated the bullets .010 further off the lands than last time, so that may have made a difference too.

By the way, the muzzle brake is awesome!! Felt recoil was about the same as my remington 700 VS in .222 Remington. In other words, virtually nill. I was easily able to maintain sight picture when firing. The muzzle blast is a bitch, though. Luckily, I was the only shooter on the line today.

I have noticed no difference in accuracy W or W/O brake on my 22 308, STILL waiting on my 260. Like you said the blast is a bitch that's why I run a suppressor, and a GOOD one WILL increase accuracy.

I have used the muzzlebrake and it doesn't seem to effect accuracy, but it does move the point of impact is several inches lower and a little to the right on my 260. I also have a TRG in 300wm and it doesn't change the accuracy or POI much at all. Still waiting for paperwork on my can, so don't have any info on that yet.

Headed out to the range with some moly 142SMKs today loaded with 43.7gr of H4350. As far as powders, haven't really tested it, but the advertised lack of temperature sensitivity has me sold on the H4350.

I wish I had a chrono too, but I have already way exceeded my shooting budget for the year by at least 400%, so the chrono will have to wait a while.

I was using the factory brake. It may not be as pretty as some others I have seen, but it sure works well.

Sunny and 75 today with low humidity, mine seemed well under what they should be and averaged 2725 fps today.

That seems about right for moly, my guess non would have gotten you close to 2800.

Made another trip to the range today. This time, Berger 140gr VLDs were on the menu. All loads listed are H-4350, Remington brass, FL resize (3rd loading), CCI 200 primer, 2.945 COL (.004 off lands). Basic case prep; no sorting of brass or bullets. This is a single load only COL. Just a bit too long to fit the mag.

Conditions were sunny, 90 degree temps, winds at 5 to 10mph.

Tried 6 different loads:

1) 41.5 H-4350 - 5 shot group was .614". 4 shots grouped .493" and a 3 shot group of .313". Not great.
2) 42.0 H-4350 - Excellent load! Measured .675" with an uncalled flyer. Other 4 shots grouped .265"
3) 42.5 H-4350 - Decent load, but not great. .570" 5 shot group, 4 shots grouped .421" and 3 shots at .297".
4) 43.0 H-4350 - Group opened up here quite a bit and showed vertical stringing. Still managed a 5 shot group of .861".
5) 43.5 H-4350 - Once again, 43.5 grains produced the best accuracy. 5 Shot group was .312", 3 shots grouped .114".
6) 44.0 H-4350 - This load did not group well with the 139gr Scenar, but did very well with the Berger. 5 shot group was .561" with a called flyer. The other 4 shots grouped .336". No signs of high pressure, but not sure I would want to push it that hard on a regular basis. Sure wish I had a chrono!

I am really starting to love this rifle. It seems to shoot everything well. My very worst loads have still been sub MOA.

I will try the Bergers again at mag length to see if they still shoot as well. I may also try the Scenars again kissing the lands to see if they perform any better there.

You shooting @ 100 LW? Can you get out to 200-300 and run some? I would load min 15 rounds ea. max mag length and then start going back .010-.020 at a time. As far as all loads tested shooting MOA you gotta try not to with a TRG as you found out.

The range I am a member at only goes to 100yds. The range I shoot matches at is 600yds, but you don't get to see your actual grouping, just your score. I don't have access to any other ranges right now. I live in NJ, so my options are pretty limited.

I plan to try some different OALs once I settle on what bullets seem to work the best. The TRG operator manual states that accuracy is generally best with the bullet seated as close as possible to the lands, so I figured I would start there and then fine tune.

I just loaded 15 each of the Scenar 139s and the Berger 140s, both at 43.5gr H-4350 and both set .005" off the lands. I'll post the results.

I loaded up 15 rounds of 139gr Scenars and 15 of 140gr Berger VLDs. All were 43.5gr of h-4350, cci200 primer, remington brass. Bullets for both loads were seated .005 off the lands.

Both shot very well and had virtually identical POI. However, the Scenars seemed to have a slight advantage based on the fact that the Bergers seemed a little more prone to flyers. The Scenars were more consistent.

Average of three, 5 shot groups for the Bergers was .527" with the best being .479".

Average of three 5 shot groups for the Scenars was .482" with a best of .456".

The Bergers still hold some advanges, however. My best group so far was with the Bergers which measured .312". Also, the bergers still grouped very well at 44.0gr of h4350 where as the Scenars opened up quite a bit at that load.

More experimentation with seating depth is in order.

Keep it coming LW. You may want to try Berger's 140 LRT's. I have had luck with VLD's in other caliber's but I really had to work at it.

I would buy a $100 chrono as opposed to a $300 rest. You'll get much more use out of the chrono as sandbags are a perfectly acceptable substituion for a rest. I have shot some of my best groups ever using sandbags.

For a chrono I am still using my 15 year old Pact I got from Midway for $99. It has never failed me and I take it to the range alomst everytime I go.

Ok, you convinced me. I just ordered a Pro Chrono Digital and tripod from cabelas. The user reviews were good and I don't need anything fancy, so this one should do. Look for chrono results for the loads I have tested soon.

A quick range report on my new TRG 22 260. I mounted up the scope and loaded up a few quick rounds.

I had some factory cor bon 260 which had 139 Scenars in 260 lapua brass.
I loaded 139 scenars and 140 vld hunting bullets in 243 lapua brass upsized and neck sized with redding dies.
Both had 43.5 of H4350.

The Cor Bon shot great, and was the 4th - 9th round through the gun.
I pulled one of my scenar handloads, and back to the reload bench for the VLDs.

Thanks for posting your results Mike. I wonder what powder/charge Corbon is using in their load? Does it say on the box? Perhaps the only difference between yours and theirs is the charge and that you are both using H4350, and they found an accuracy node at the lower velocity.

I see you went with the factory mount, nice choice. Did you get the low 30mm? Any chance for a side view of the clearance you have between the objective and the barrel?
