twist on a 308

Re: twist on a 308

the common 1:12 will work fine with many of the 175grn bullets...I've shot the 180vld Berger's as well without any issues in my 1:12 factory 700.

That said, as stated above, the 11.25 will probably work a better for some of the slightly longer bullets.

Re: twist on a 308

Suburbanhick,

The 1x10's were originally the military's choice for the 30-40 Krag and the M1903 Springfield. Both used 220-230 grain round nosed bullets. With the 175s. a 1x12" will have you covered quite nicely, no problem at all.

Re: twist on a 308

The 1-10 would be for longer bullets, typically heavier.

A lot of people use the 1-10 with great success as do they with the 1-12. Just the 1-10 gives you a few more options...for example, I believe the 1:10 is the suggested twist of the SMK 175 (maybe it's the 178). (don't recall what they suggest in the 175 bullet- I shoot them in my 1:12 with no problems)

I love these Threads where one person asks what to get and others tell him all sorts of things to buy...and many responses later we discover that he never said, and no one ever asked, for what purpose the thing was intended.

LMFAO.... well said.... never the less i usually just take the majority of answeres and go with them.... how ever 11.27 it is

Re: twist on a 308

I would look to what was available and in the contour I want, truth is unless you are doing something specialized with your 308 anything 12 or faster will work and even then depending on which 168 and 175 were talking you could get comfortably by with a 13 twist

this is a good source for twist, http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmstab-5.1.cgi

lengths can be found under lengths on the left...

alright... im on there... it shows a 1-10 is more stable.....but why would being onve 2.0 be bad?

Re: twist on a 308

suburban, It's like Graham said. What do you want to do with your new barrel? Most competitors taylor their bbl. to whatever discipline they're shooting, ie; palma, f/tr, f/open or just having fun. Generally accepted twists are; 155gr 1-13, 168&175 is 1-12, 185 to 190 is 11.25. My 40xs with a 29in. Broughton is a 1-11.25. I experimented with Horn. 208. BIG waste of time and $ for bullets that long you need 1-10, at least. So, it boils down to what you want to do with your stick and how far you want to shoot it. IMHO

Bad, no just more than you need. FWIW 1.4 is the recommended floor. Higher just means your bullet is spinning faster than needed. Some believe this can cause its own set of issues for bullet flight... But with as many 1-10’s that are out there it can’t be that big of a deal or folks would be posting about issues.

Re: twist on a 308

im going to be using this as a all round precision rifle... it will see mostly range time at 300+ yards and will be hunted with at 300+ yards... the biggest i will hunt with it is texas deer out to 600... but will see alot of hogs also.... 165-178 should be more than enough for deer anything i want to do inside of 600

i love my SMK never used the A max nor berger....

Re: twist on a 308

I have several 12's (all factory) and a 11.27 custom all will shoot those bullets well from 0-1000y or as long as they stay supersonic. My favorite deer hunting bullet is the Berger VLD 168g which just so happens to have the same BC as a 175 SMK and works great with the FDAC slide rule should you be so inclined. This bullet seems to handle jump well in all my 308 rifles once you find the correct COAL.
