Looking to build a suppressor host that is a SBR, bolt action ranch rifle for varmint removal. As of the moment I am leaning towards .357/38 special or 300 blackout. I hear .38 special can get stupid quiet. Anyone have a recommendation on what caliber to go with? Max range would be 200yds and I would like the option to run supers if possible.

300black out sounds perfect for what you want. very quiet running sub sonic ammo through a silencer. but then you have the option to go super sonic as well. with lots of a good ammo selection too.

I'm not sure on their reliability/accuracy but Ive always thought this rifle would be a good truck/ranch gun. no direct experience though

Yea 300blk out is what you are discribing. 200gr + for subsonic. Just remember a 45 ACP fires a 230gr bullet at subsonic speeds, so that is roughly the terminal performance you will get.
At one point there was someone working on a thin jacketed heavy 308 bullet for subsonic 300 black out. I dont think it went anywhere.
With that 200+ grain bullets are designed to be fired out of 300 magnums and as such the jackets are pretty tough.

300 blk with hornady subsonic expanding ammo. Or wait for 8.6 creedmoor to come out. Same concept as 300 blk, but a .338 bullet out of a 308 sized case. Supers and subs will be available. I think subs will be 300+ grains.

I built a 11" 308 Winchester in a 11.25 or 11.75 twist (can't remember). This gave me the flexibility of full power 135g SMK loads which are entirely too loud, even with a can, but 185g Juggs subsonic using Trail Boss are ultra quiet and insanely accurate. If you want a gun that can do both, I recommend you do something similar unless you only want quiet pews.

I went thru the same sort of dilemma a few months ago. I've had a 700 AAC tactical in 300 BO but found it too bulky for my intended uses. I ended up getting one of these Threaded Model 7 Link in 308 a few months ago for flexibility between super/subs. The Model 7 with a 16.5" barrel and 8 inches of suppressor is still a pretty compact package. If it was strictly for subsonic use I'd go 300 BO with 1:7 every time. You also have the option for supersonic use with the Blackout but full power BO loads still seem pretty anemic to me for anything larger than small deer. If you really want the quietest option available for critter control, you may want to look into an integrally suppressed bolt rifle.

I've also looked at 357/38 or 45 LC because of availability of cheap subsonic ammo; but going the lever gun route. I would think a threaded Rossi or Marlin would work pretty well. Ive heard mixed reports of whether 38 special would stay subsonic out of a 16" barrel, but SBR'd out of a bolt gun It would work great. I think ruger is still chambering the 77/357, should be a pretty good SBRd candidate I would imagine. Biggest issue with any of the common pistol calibers is I would think your max effective range would be really limited to 100 Yds max. If you plan on buying factory ammo and usefulness beyond 100 yds is important, and don't want to spend a fortune on it, I think the BO would be the best option out of those mentioned. I have a blackout in an SBR AR 7 twist and with 200+ grain high BC bullets it does reasonably well at 250 yds but better plan on using a range finder because of the amount of drop your dealing with. Past 100 yds, if your shooting at smaller targets, misjudging yardage will result in a miss.

I've also been doing some reading on the new 8.6 creedmore and I think once that hits prime time it will outclass the blackout in bolt gun configuration.

300blk is going to be your best bet. Lehigh and Maker Bullets make 30 cal projectiles designed to expand or fracture at subsonic speeds. Using some of the faster pistol powders can get you some stupid quiet rounds. I use a Hornady 150 fmj and VV Tin Star (N32C) as a practice round out to 275 yds.
At subsonic speeds, you can fix a sammich before it hits the target :ROFLMAO:

My brother has a CZ527 in 300 BO with an AAC can and it is stupid quiet shooting subsonic ammunition. Only downside is the range depending on your terrain. Our NE Oregon ranch dictates a 300-400yd cartridge for coyotes ideally.

Yeah, rarely can you get decent shots closer than 150-200. Which might be on the far side for the 300BO already. I’m not that good of a caller and don’t have too many dumb coyotes to always get them close but sometimes they are in your lap before you know it and then the first shot spooks the pack. Situations like that will be fun. And rarely do I call alone or only have one gun in the truck, so really it’s honestly a novelty caliber but who cares

.300BLK subs do better than you think. They have a high BC and lose little velocity on out to 400m, as such the drop is fairly consistent on out too.

120gr. supers are pretty close to AK x39 specs.

Here's some of the testing I've done with factory Hornady 190 Sub-X and Lehigh 174 CF

174 Lehigh Defense Controlled Fracturing at around 950 fps in clear ballistic gel
Recovered Hornady 190 Sub-X pulled and loaded to 780 fps, and still in the gel.

My brother bought the 527 specifically for Coyote hunting in south central Oregon. He hunts with a friend who's a great caller. Full camo with strategic positioning.... there are times we've took the shot at 15 yards. It's a rush that close when you first spot them coming in to the call at 600yds to basically point blank.
If you want to get into calling here's a link to my friends calls: https://instagram.com/lorenerickson?utm_source=ig_profile_share&igshid=1kcxwpteirdbg
