I am using a Hornady LNL AP for my reloading and was wondering if anybody else had trouble bumping the shoulders on their brass. I am using a Redding body die for 300WSM and have the die screwed all the way until touching the shellplate. When I measure using a headspace gage I can see the shoulder doesn’t change and now I am having trouble closing the bolt on the rifle. I guess my question is 1) am doing something wrong or 2) is the Redding body die only for the body and not designed to bump the shoulder or 3) do I need to use a single stage press?

I use a single stage press and I use a Redding body die for my 300 WSM loading. I turn the die about a 1/4 turn until the brass will chamber without resistance and then I set the die there. This has worked very well for me and I dont really measure the shoulder but go by feel instead. It seems that my brass is lasting a very long time cause the only brass I have ever had to trash was because primers fell out and I run a nearly compressed / crush load.
If you cant size the brass anymore to make it fit without resistance I would call Redding an ask them what they think.

Sometimes it is a situation where the chamber (brass) is a little shorter than the die and you are not able to adjust the die down far enough to bump the shoulders with the shell holder you are using. I've used a set of Redding comp shell holders to solve this when it happens.

Agreed, if you have turned the die all way down until it makes contact with the shell holder and then turned it 1/4 tuen more before locking it down and it still doesnt bump the shoulder, I would think one of two things....the die was reamed to deep by accident in construction or the chamber was reamed to shallow, both seem unlikely though to me. Redding makes a quality product and I would guess that the factory loads would have been super hard to close the bolt too.
two suggestions....if you are sure you have turned down the die far enough...call redding and/or invest in the competition shell holders. They allow you to adjust the bump without resetting the die.

This comes up relatively often. Almost always with Redding dies. My 280 AI dies had the same issue.
You can do one of 2 things: (1) Take the die to a machine shop and have .010 taken off the bottom, or (2) take a shellholder to a machine shop and have .010 taken off the top.
I ground the shellholder myself with a drill press and some stones.
If you want to use a progressive press, I would probably recommend having the die machined. I guess you could always send it back to Redding to have it done (maybe on their dime), but any local machine shop can do it in no time at all.

Interesting to hear. I have not yet had this problem with the various calibers I reload. Always good to hear about an issue beofre coming across it. I would be that guy banging my head against a wall for hours before thinking to ask others....

I've seen it a couple times now. I ground 0.010" off my buddies shellholder when his shoulder wouldn't bump. Just remember that you still want the face of the shellholder and the die remain parallel. Have it ground by a competent machine shop and you should be fine. Also after doing that you want to make sure you label that shell holder as being the one that goes with that die. If you can't find a local shop, send it to me and I'll do it for free.

Seriously, the die should be perfectly flat across the bottom in relation to everything else. If I didn't want to pay for it, I'd see if the die maker would do it for free.

I had this problem with a Hornady press - turns out I was using a Hornady shell holder which is slightly higher than RCBS. Went back to my RCBS and problem solved.

I had this same issue with my custom 308. When the smith chambered my rifle he checked the headspace with his go/no go gauge and all was well, but when it came down to sizing my brass, with the die touching the shell holder, I couldn't bump the shoulder back enough. I had 2 options, either I could take the rifle back and have the chamber reamed a couple .001's deeper or I could take a couple .001's off the bottom off my die with a bench grinder or lathe. I chose to take a bit off the bottom of the die enabling me to screw the die down slightly more. Never had any further issues.

Actually, the fix came from here, but I didn't see it suggested yet above...
Rather than just screwing the die down until it makes contact, do that, and then lower the shellplate.
I can't recall whether it was 1/2, 3/4, or close to a full additional turn on the die. Start at 1/2, and then run the press handle. It should cam over HARD. Camming lightly over does not take every bit of slack out of the contact. Turn the die in until it cams over with substantial resistance- and measure your headspace again.
My bet is that it will solve your problem. I was ready to send my die back to Hornady until someone here suggested that to me.

Granted, it's the first- and only press I've ever owned- but I don't find myself "wanting" for anything different with it. I know I've made in excess of 5000 rounds with it, and as long as I did my part correctly, never so much as a hiccup...

No, I love my LNL. I bought it about 2 years ago and it is my first and only press and works great. I use it a lot for 9mm and 223 loading. I have a new 260 precision rifle that I would like to make quality rounds with and from what I understand the Forster design will greatly reduce runnout (not that I have a gauge yet). Also, I like the idea of using Redding shell holders that allow you to make adjustments to your sizing and seating without changing the position of the die. You just can’t do that with these shellplates.

I used to have an issue with the powder getting into the primer shuttle as well...pain in the ass..
It usually happened when loading cases to near max, and overfilling them. But once I got the primer drop tube adjusted properly to the length of the cartridge, I haven't had the problem since.
I used to try to "cheat" and not adjust the length of the powder measure every caliber change if they were"close", but now I just do it (screwing the measure up/down until it just maxes out) and I no longer have any spilled powder, whether I'm using ball or extruded.
You really shouldn't be having an issue with that. If you're sure you've got everything properly adjusted, I'd call Hornady. They're very helpful (got my machine indexed properly when I first bought it)...

The brass could be work hardened and springing back too much. Try annealing. How many times has the brass been shot?

He's referring to the F/L die. No need to trim the neck die because the neck die only sizes the neck. It doesn't bump the case shoulder or size the body.

Do you think this causes undue stress to the press? I can't imagine driving the die into the plate would be good for it. I am relatively new to this so I am open to ideas.

Well yes and no. The way I have it doesn't put any aggressive amount of stress. When I say that the caming effect feels like a less exaggerated collet die, I mean SUPER FAR LESS exaggerated. If that makes sense.
I highly doubt this causes too much stress simply because the force that you put on the press in order to actually size a neck with the collet die, far exceeds the force I am describing.
The only reason I used the body die tonight was because I saw this thread again and decided to try it myself to see if I had the same issue. I sized once fired Federal GMM brass just to see.
The headspace was 1.619 (I think) before sizing. When I sized with the body die just touching the plate, the headspace became 1.621. I believe this is because the die was so far out that sizing the body of the case forced the datum forward.
I screwed the die in little by little and it showed no change until try number 3 or 4 (I was moving in VERY small increments). The first time that I saw a change, the headspace went to 1.620. Screwed the die further and tried one more time and the headspace became 1.618.
This is all useless to me since the brass was once fired. Therefore, I doubt my true headspace is 1.619. Probably closer to 1.620 or 1.621. Probably should have thrown that case in the rifle to see if it chambered.
None the less, this proved to me that the die was capable of going far enough into the press to bump the shoulder enough for my needs.

To OP, re-read what I stated above about removing material from the bottom of the die, it's really not enough material to cause any issues...you could even call Hornady yourself to hear it from the horses mouth.

Everything we are talking about is solid metal. So you can be assured that when you cross the line and push the die too far into the press, it will stop you dead in your tracks. Unless you are really clueless, I doubt you would be dumb enough to stand on the press handle and try to crush the die like a soda can.
