In honor of my Savage Axis that is currently the platform for my build, I would like to hold a shootout for rifles under 500 dollars. For some it might be like Lance Armstrong riding a Huffy, but I think there could be some fun to be had here. I'll post some targets after shooting today or tomorrow, and we'll see where this goes. Thanks, and I hope others find this thought as entertaining as I do.

Re: Under 500 shootout.

Just picked up a Mossberg MVP Predator 5.56 for $479. Added an existing standby Tasco 6-24x42 MilDot Varmint/Target scope.

Still need to clean the bore fom the factory and Git 'Er Started.

Could be fun. Tell me more about the COF.

Re: Under 500 shootout.

a few variables would have to be nailed down - 500 would be for what parts?
-what you paid or new cost?
-including optics/bipod?
-rifle without scope/base/rings?
- just barreled action?

I think a decent guideline would be: what you paid (on the open market) for the rifle including stock and scope base + parts added + labor paid to others for work done on it

so not including optics/ rings/ magazines/bipod/ammo

but this is your deal - so you make the call

Re: Under 500 shootout.

500 is the cost of the rifle. All parts on the rifle must be included in the 500. the only thing not included is the optics. I figure that's a good price point. I'm basically seeing what kind of groups we can put up with what some would call a less than adequate rifle.

Re: Under 500 shootout.

is the $500 cost of the rifle its brand new price or say i picked up a used rifle for 275 from the pawn shop. which do you want to go by?

</div></div> Lets go by the price of the rifle as you bought it. That seems fare enough.

Re: Under 500 shootout.

fair enough to me. picked up an old savage 110 .270 a couple weeks ago for hunting and alittle paper punching when not season. i will throw some different loads at it and we shall see what i come up with.

Re: Under 500 shootout.

Perfect. Bought my 12BVSS w/ a Leupold for $1,400. Leupold goes for $1,000 so my rifle's only $400, right

Do what you have to do to make you stronger... I haven't seen gunfight winners have the win revoked years later!

Re: Under 500 shootout.

Andy you may wanna set your rules up quick. What range, how many shots, what rest is allowed stuff like that. Go look at Elfster's shootouts to get a idea.

I can drive out really quick and shoot 3 shots into paper at 5 yards.

IMHO optics, rings, bases, bipods should not being counted towards cost. Triggers, stocks, barrels, actions all do. Or you could go must have factory tube and stock. And has to retail $500.

You never know someone may have picked up a TRG off a buddy who needed 500 bucks??

Shhhhh! Be quiet!

Re: Under 500 shootout.

Bipod, rests, and bags are allowed. the range will be 200 meters, and we'll be shooting 5 shot groups, no more than 30 seconds between shots. We're using the honor system.
