I have a fair bit of experience with trade unions, I have been in them (no longer), and around them the entirety of my career. I worked out in PA for the span of about 18 months back in the early 2000s. In Eastern PA, the unions resembled and emulated pretty much all the terrible things you hear about unions. I will never forget when this chubby asshole in a suit came ambling across a muddy jobsite to ask me for my "operators union" card because I was driving an all terrain forklift doing my job. I promptly told him to go fuck himself and drove away. Those guys immediately walked into our jobsite trailer and basically threatened to shut the job down as well as made numerous other threats. These guys were complete pieces of shit. Terrible work ethic to boot. Coming from MT and being around farms and ranches my whole life, the concept of just doing "one job" was foreign to me.
Fast forward 10 months and I am working in western PA, or more accurately, West Virginia. But much of the labor force came from western PA. Once again, almost all the trades were union trades, and they actually had a consolidated approach on jobsites. These guys were some of the most well trained, hardest working folks I have ever been around. If the jobsite opened at 7, these guys were there at 6:45 putting their belts on to make sure that they were hard at it when it was 7. They were very goal oriented, task focused, and their quality of work was second to none. I was floored, because on the other side of the state resided some of the worst people I have ever met in my life. That was 20 years ago, no idea what it is like now. My understanding was the unions out there formed when folks were working in coal mines, and very often, never left at the end of the day. Lots of workers were dying or getting injured and they finally had enough and decided to unite to stick up for themselves. Who knows, I am not a coal miner and didn't really delve that deep into it. It felt like a plausible explanation though.
Unfortunately, like someone said above, once someone gets a bunch of power and can start to wield it with no repercussions shit goes downhill. I suspect that is what happened with most of the unions.

I've been forced to be a union member for about 30 years now. I'd estimate that 70% of union employees are pro-gun, pro-Trump, hunting, fishing, camping and all about individual rights and freedoms. Union management is another story, it is 99% communist fucking scum. The upper leadership of every union has basically inherited their positions from their parents and grandparents. None of them have ever worked a day as a laborer, truck driver, warehouse worker, carpenter, iron worker or operating engineer and they do not give to shits for any union employee.
My last union owned hotels in Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach, San Francisco and on most Hawaiian islands. The rich and powerful crooks that run the union on a national or regional level, go there to recreate, whore, do dope, golf and trade bribes with elected officials. As a dues paying union member I can get a reservation and pay full fucking price for a shit room with zero consideration for my decade of dues. If I was an elected official, I'd get a $1500 a day suite for $120 a day, free golf, free rental car, free dining and whores.
I'd like to say unions suck, but I get paid a decent wage for my highly skilled job. If there was no union, the level of training would be far lower and the company and/or government agency would fuck the employee out of every dollar possible. And yes, I have a skill and 30 years experience doing this job. I've never worked for a private company that "took care" of their employees. They have fucked every defined benefit pension in America when given the chance. They will fuck every 401K or 457K or IRA if given half the chance. They will fuck every person out of medical insurance, life insurance and their life savings if given 1/2 a chance. If you think your employer cares and that employer is not related to you, you are in fact a complete idiot.
Last year my company made well over $2 BILLION dollars. Of the 500 employees, we do not need 80% of them to maintain and create electrical power. We have a dozen safety assholes, I've never seen one out of their office. We have a dozen HR fucktards sending out invitations for asshole luncheons, were we can all sit and hear stories from fags and tranny's about how hard their lives are. We have five levels of management so none of those idiots can get forced into making a decision because every decision is pawned upwards or downwards and never get acted upon. We have warehouses of equipment that you will get writers cramps trying to procure. It took three weeks to get my work truck "winterized", meaning they checked the wipers, tires and added washer fluid.............................................three weeks. Most of these people are told by management/HR or whomever to leave me/my coworkers alone and under no circumstances interfere with us in our daily chores, they have been instructed to not ask questions or interfere in what we are doing, wherever we are doing it. Most of them are not allowed in the places I work for any reason. They literally have no idea what is happening or why it is happening or where the endless millions they piss away actually come from.
Engineers are the exceptional example of useless. They design and redesign whatever they are screwing with over and over and bid and rebid it so that some basic projects take a decade to complete. Why? Because if it fails, they do not want to be held accountable, so if they never complete a project, they never have to explain what happened. Every utility I've worked for has shit engineers doing marginal work. I've met one epically awesome engineer in my travels and he makes bank fixing his counterparts, shit math and specifications.
I think my return in value for my pay is pretty fucking fair. If the 100 people who do all the work in this place made a million dollars a year each, this place would still make $1.9 Billion dollars. I have no problems getting every dollar humanly possible for my labor. Why should I take less? If they cut my pay 50% they would not lower their prices for power a single penny, not one cent.
