Hunting & Fishing unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

23 is a great area. There are tons of antelope there. I'm sure you won't have any problems finding them. Are you going to hunt BLM or try to get on a ranch?

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

we are on a ranch. charles tweddy is the mans name. i just hope i get drawn. my father and i did the partners hunt so my understanding is if either of us get drawn we both do. also we put in for a couple does

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

I know Chuck pretty well. Used to work on some wells on their place. It's only about 15 minutes from town. Very good people.

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

Man you never know who you'll meet on this site LOL.

I just put in with a group of buds to go to Gillette somewhere on public land. I'm not sure what areas we put in for. I know there is an area near Lander that my friend always puts in for but never gets drawn so they wind up near Gilette every year. This will be my first year doing it.

so if im reading this right there were 456 tags to give out and everyone got one that wanted one. and noone put it as there first chioce?

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

Tweedys place is pretty open, rolling hills, and he also has some hay fields. Most of it is just praire and sagebrush. I drove through there tonight on my way in and saw over 100 goats just from the county road. His place is decent size and he'll know where they are. You'll have no problems filling your tags.

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

i think its a rifle only tag or am i wrong. we are going early oct is that archery season. if i have the option ill take a bow and rifle. if i can connect with bow great if not ill grab the gun.

all this is assuming i get drawn wich may be a big assumption on my part

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

I think the problem with Wyoming hunting is not animals, its the economy, meaning not as many non-resident hunters putting in for tags.

Good for draws, but dosn't help in keeping critters off the roads or out of my hay.

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

I don't think you'll have any problems getting drawn for 23, I haven't hunted out there but i've been all over that area and the goats are pretty plentiful to say the least

i've been hunting around Gillette for years and never had a problem filling my tags.

your gonna have a blast! make sure you take pictures!

thats got to be above average isn't it. espicially with a bow. im really debating on using a bow. atleast for a day or so

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

Tweedy has a few good water holes. Maybe you could get Chuck to set up a blind near one of them before the season opens. Come to think of it, I have seen some blinds out there in years past.

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

i bought a 243 today. i went with the tc venture. i have to see if this sub moa garentee on a rifle that is 425 to my door is bull shit. all the reviews ive read say its defintally sub moa and then some. it has a 1-10 twist so what bullets do you folks use for pronghorn?

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

I would have reccomended 105 a-max's or bergers but the 1-10 will have trouble stabilizing them, might want to try some 95gr VLD's. In my experience you shouldn't have to shoot any more than 250 yards and any off the shelf soft point will do just fine at that range...

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

Yeah the 100gr SP's are short for weight though, they will stabilize much easier in a slower twist. I shoot 220gr RNSP's out of my 1-12" 308, but it won't stabilize a 185 VLD.

you can go to JBM ballistics and use their twist rate calculator to see if your bullets will stabilize, ideally you want your stabilization factor to be close to 1.5, but anything from 1.2-2.0 should be just fine

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

just found out i got drawn. heading to wyoming in october. im in the process of building a new 260. if its done i will take it. if not ill take the 243. i doubt its done but you never

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

Congratulations! There's some good goats around this year with all the moisture we've gotten. I drew 73 again this year. Good luck!

yup there are some big ol pigs running around for sure. Haven't seen grass like this for years !

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

Gillette is fairly open country. You can expect about anything for a shot. 100 yards to as far as your comfortable shooting. The later in the season and the more people in the area the farther you'll have to shoot.

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

Yep, the wind is just part of the hunt out there. Adds to the challenge of the hunt.

I'll have to get me a tag again one of these days, hunting antelope is a lot of fun.

Re: unit 23 wyoming pronghorn hunt

Im severely jealous that you got drawn. I drew the first time I ever put in, now its going to be ages before it ever happens again. Good luck blastin a speedgoat!

it blows around here ! know your wind if you are gonna shoot past 200 ! </div></div>

im working on my wind reading skills. truth be told if its blowing hard or real gusty ill just try and get closer. wounding a animal would ruin my hunt

Yup practice in the winds from 10-32mph, make a dope chart for fast info & dial ups if you use a scope w/target knobs. Practice using mil dots of your scope has them.
I shot one in a 33mph cross wind 3 yrs back & had to hold 43" into the wind and my bullet hit it right through the shoulder where I planned it.
The only bullet I now use for antelope is noslers 95g HBT, darn thing just lays em out flat to 700 yards in my 243.

Willing to pay a fee if required. I had read previously that some ranchers view them as a nuisance and are looking to get rid of them. The folks I've called have been pretty short and just stated that they're full. I figured second weekend would be a bit more open.

It's a big area that is managed in two different herds is why I asked. We've had a few freaks on us from time to time, but they never last long. You are correct in surmising we are in fact close to Cordero. I'll be glad when Antelope season is over and things are back to normal.
