Buddy just called and said a LGS has some TC Ventures that they just got back from the recall fix and have a sale going for ~379.00 and a Howa ranchland compact for ~ 349.00.

I know very little about the TC other than it has a 60* bolt throw and MOA guarantee for accuracy (3 shot groups).

If the Howa were the varmint barrel for that price I would be all over the Howa but its the pencil thin barrel. I think I am going to go take a look.

What do you guys think of them?

Should I just hold out for something better like the Howa varminter, Tikka, Remington or Winchester?

Thanks

I have a Howa Ranch in 22-250 and a Rem 700 in 22-250, for kicken around in a truck I use the Howa, if I am setting
in one spot sending dogs to the other side, I use the 700 heavy varmint barrel.

The action is very smooth and I don't think the knob is too short. Maybe in cold weather with heavy gloves it could be an issue. As you likely know, T/C is owned by Smith and Wesson so great warranty and customer service. I too looked at Howa, Rem, Savage before I settled on the T/C and am not unhappy. The fit and finish is great. The only down side is that the factory stock is kind of cheesy and the only after market I could find was the XLR chassis but it is a fantastic set up.
How do you like the action?

Is the bolt knob too short?

Just went tonight to buy one of them but I am going to have to think on it and go back tomorrow.

The Howa they had, had a horrible trigger. Probably the worst I have felt on any of their rifles. They had other Howa's but they were $200.00+ more expensive. The TC they had was nice but a heavy on the bolt lift and closure compared to the Howa.

I am going back also with my calipers to make sure the barrel on whichever I choose has enough meat for me to thread it to 1/2x28

When I am done I hope to have my QD mount permanently fixed to the end of a 14.5" barrel to bring it up to 16" OAL for the barrel

ETA - crap now my local Cabela's is going to have a Remington 700 ADL varmint in .223 for 399.00 on Oct 10-20th

What do I do now?

Update -

Went today and bought the TC venture in .223

Now it's off the smith to be cut to 14.5" and have the QD mount permanently attached to bring OAL to 16".

Now a few questions

Do the ICON bolt knobs fit the Venture?

If not can any of the Hide smiths put on a new knob?

The inside of the bolt has a ton of grease - what is the best solution to put in the heated ultrasonic cleaner to clean that stuff off?

Thanks

Don't know about the ICON bolt knob, I would just call T/C and ask. As far as the grease, I would soak it in a bath of mineral spirits then spray the crap out of it with brake cleaner.
