I've been looking for the civilian equivalent of the USMC S&B scope for a M40A5 build but they appear to be out of production. So I've been keeping an eye for the real M8541 marked scopes. I've noticed recently that one was listed on ebay and I see the seller now has another one already listed that is already going for around $5k. After looking at his other auctions which has more marine equipment and along with his close location to Camp Lejuene, I began to wonder if these scopes could be stolen? Or are the scopes being DRMO-ed? But it is my understanding that the marines still use the S&B scope on the M40 in cojunction with the PR scope on the M110, so I was curious how these Marine S&B scopes are being made available outside of the marines legally? If I buy a M8541, how do I know they aren't stolen and Uncle Sam isn't going to come looking for the scope?

thanks

I was wondering the same thing. I know there was S&B scopes sold by Premeir back in the day that are marked 8541, but there wasn't a NSN Marking on it. The one that is on eBay has the NSN mark. I'm wondering if that has any significance?

That S&B contract is still open, they would not be hitting DRMO yet, they'd be sent back for trade or upgrades. Verly likely to be stolen, Id run away from those.

Thanks, that is what I figured. I got suspicious since the seller just sold one for $5100 on Jun 13 and now has another one due to close on Jun 19. How many M8541 does one person have?? And both have the NSN markings, simrad mount, rings. And the latest one also the USMC scope covers.

Pisses me off if these are indeed stolen. Wonder if the NCIS office at Camp Lejuene can look into it.

NSN markings alone don't make it real! I would check w/ Jerry at S&B or lizardking308 for more info. There needs to be some type of "matrix" on the ocular; which the one on ebay has.

that particular gentleman has removed all his listings from ebay...
I bid on a Trijicon RMR in an LT726 mount he had a while back...missed that one, but then he had another...and another and another 6...all without packing or papers...I left well alone.

BE VERY CAREFUL on these EBAY scopes! Weather or not they are stolen, I do not Know. But I do know one of the sellers is burning people. Be super careful! I know someone that has gotten burnt on a scope already. He paid for the scope and has yet to receive it. Be smart, if the price is too good to be true, then guess what? Its too good to be true! If you decide to buy one, only go through EBAY and PAYPAL ONLY, so you are protected against fraud. Dont take 2nd chance offers. Its a SCAM. IT IS A SCAM! Hope that helps keeps people from getting screwed. My buddy bought one and got burnt. Its turned into a fiasco. He cant get EBAY to help or Paypal, because he saw the scope online and offered him to buy it off of the ebay system. Wired him the $$$ and now hes out $3800. If anyone knows the guy sellling these scopes, please PM me. I am going to pass the info onto my buddy. He needs this guys info so he can contact FBI. Or PM for his number if you would rather talk to him directly.

No offense but the scenerio you described sounds like it was setting up to be a rip off from the start. Sorry for your friend's loss of money but I would think bells and whistles should've been going off beforehand, seems wire transfers are regularly used for scams. Firsty it was a deal voluntarily done outside of ebay with an unknown person and then it was agreed upon to use wire transfer for payment instead of paypal or even a cashier/bank check or money orders that would at least require a name/address of the person. Does he not even have the name of the person? That's a lot of money to blindly send on good faith. I know one ebay seller is listed as in Wrightsville Beach NC and another in SC, so your friend may want to call the city police department from whichever one of them he bought the scope for and report the crime/scam if he hasn't done so already.

My buddy got his $$$ back. He used his AMEX to send $$$ and the account was already closed that he sent $$$ to. Luckily for him he got his $$$ back. I still think he should persue legal action against the scammer. Anyhow, like I said before, if the price is too good to be true, then ITS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. The scopes that are out there go for about $5000 +. I have owned several and sold many of them.

What ever happened to gear adrift?! Maybe it was just adrift atop an m40 in the armory. Pfc sticky fingers.

I mean wouldn't the first thing be to just contact s/b and see if you can get more info?

Sometimes, I think the buyers who are getting a smoking deal don't care whether or not its stolen in hopes of getting it cheap and completing their build. They know the moment they contact S&B, etc to check to see if its stolen they lose that window of opportunity to purchase.
