Well, I can tell you from experience the USO will take a serious pounding. I once had a USO scope take a fall from the hood of my pickup landing elevation turret first on fist-sized boulders, forgot to mention it had a 13lb GAP rifle attatched to it. Well, the scope shifted zero by .2 mils, and after I sent it to John Jr. @ USO, he verified that there was no damage. USO replaced the dinged up turret, and sent it back...no charge.

The SS is a fine scope, and your correct, it is in a class of it's own, but that class is not the same as the USO as far as quality and service goes.

OutRider, I have both a 10X Leupold and a USO SSDS. My 10X rides on top of my Anshutz .22 now but was on my .308 for 10 yrs. It is a great power choice for the .308 IMHO. Never had the chance to even see a SS 10X42. USO is decent, I would like a Nightforce in straight 10X. Someday... Maybe...

I've never had a SS HD, so I cannot testify to the product. I've had the previous generation, and its a great value, dollar for dollar.

There is no doubt in my mind that the SS HD is a better value per dollar than the 95% of the other scopes out there. It may even be a better value, per dollar, than any other scope out there.

But I find it very hard to believe its in the same class as a ST10 or even the same quality. Plus, add in all the options you have with the ST10. MOA reticles, MIL reticles, MOA turrets, MIL turrets, EREK, M40 knobs, Lit reticles, non lit reticles, finishes, etc etc.

Sure the SS HD is a GREAT VALUE per dollar, but outside of PH and S&Bs, I don't think there is a better scope than a USO. Of course, YMMV.

I have recently looked through a SS-HD and owned several USOs previously. To be honest, as far as glass quality goes, I would say they are about equal with the SS maybe having a slight edge. What's better about the USO is the reticles, knobs and illumination.

i can tell you guys this...... i went to USO yesterday to order my ST10 and boy what an awesome experience. When i got there i was asked if I had any questions i said the only thing i need is to look at a green recticle and a red one. sure enough one of there guys came out from the back and spent 45 minutes talking me through the order process. He brought up questions i didnt even think regarding know configuration and ton of other things. I highly reccomend USO to anyone.

Here's a question that figures in here.
Why do folks cut their barrels way down to save weight but do not even look at weight when considering a scope?
I guess it is because more expensive scopes weigh more?
I've handled the SS and liked it's light weight.
It would be hard to turn down a USO but a weight savings might offset that somewhat, especially if the scope you end up with performs well.
After all, we are in a pretty steep recession right?
Lucky to have such a delimna.

Once again you prove yourself to be a class act. SWFA is one of the best outfits out there, and has been for a while. I remember SWFA giving me 100% credit on a scope I had found a flaw with after I had it and used it for 6mo+ years ago. One of these days (I hope) I will be wealthy enough to reward those that have taken care of me with lots of business!

I actually just mounted an SS10x42 for my first tac scope (so opinion is not worth much) but the scope performs well, assuming the HD is mechanically the same. The turrent adjustments seem to be accurate (measured and performed the a box test). I was concerned with the reviews pertaining to turrents, and once turned several times they become more defined and audible. Shooting so far with this scope has left me with no complaints.

Outrider, you have a win win situation here! Take advantage of it. Buy a ST10 and a SS HD. SWFA will take the HD back or Ill take the ST10! You end up with the one you want. It doesn't get any better than that!

Everything about the HD is different. It is not the original SS10x42 with better glass it is a totally different optical system and mechanics. The first thing you would notice is the feel of the scope, the HD's fit and finish is first class. Second thing you would notice would be the turrets, they use one large center screw instead of three small screws around the side and the clicks are very tactile and audible (crisp and clean). Once you look through it you will realize that it should be selling for 2x what it is. The image quality really shows at longer ranges when comparing it side by side against other scopes in the same price range and higher.

The sunshade is from a SAW scope and was a thought to see if it would work like the one on the SVD Dragunov I shot in OEF VII. It wasn't so it sits in a 'stuff' box for now.

I am new to the long range community but am very excited to learn as much as I can from others so the info was great.
Also, its crazy that you were talking about this, i was getting ready to order a SS 10x in the very near future. My problems was to go HD or not but i can assure you I will definitely be purchasing the HD model per your advice.
I currently have a Sightron SIII 6-24x50 on my Savage 10FCP w/ McMillan stock. My plan is to order the SS and put it on the 10FCP and put the SIII on a 22-250 project gun I'm working on.
Anyway, mainly just wanted to say thanks for the information and I'm really impressed with SWFA. You can expect my continued business.

Thank you for the clarification, (honestly did not know). I am considering an HD for a second purchase on my next rifle. Also, has anything recently changed with the current line of SS 10x42's? I noticed when I ordered that the price was dropped to 299, from 319. I assume nothing has changed in production to make it cheaper?

They have been $299.95 since the original contract overrun blow-out deal almost 20 years ago. We went up for the first time last year to $319.95 due to some additional cost we were incurring, these cost have since came down so we moved the price back to $299.95.

The 20x42 is $279.95 because we are way over stocked on that model.

Just to throw a spanner in - Anybody seen/handled the new Sightron 10x scope? (OK I know Chris@SWFA will have) as it has a rear PX too - always seemed just plain sensible to me.

Just niggles that SWFA wont (or maybe cant or aren't allowed too) ship to us Eurozoners. But Sightron does have EU dealers.

Dont know about the Sightron 10x but i love my 6-24x50 SIII. When i was scope shopping it was between that and the SS HD. Altho now im planning on purchasing the SS HD as well so i can have the best of both worlds.
And again Chris i have to echo what Velocity said, i honest didnt know that either but the clarification was super helpful in my decision.

I figured that is why you picked what you did.

I don't think we have ever sold one of those to be honest. We don't have any issues with regular Badger Ordnance rings so I don't see any reason to add weight to your rifle with the one piece set up but I made the offer and if that is what you want to do I will stand behind my word.

...the three screw design of the SS rings certainly make them <span style="font-style: italic">look</span> rugged...truth be told, if I do buy this scope from you, the cheap rings should suffice, unless you think it would truly be in my best interest to take advantage of your good nature here...

...the first order of bussiness will be to get this rig to 1000yds, although in genreal the ranges of engagement will be considerably less...

...weight <span style="font-style: italic">is</span> a factor, and the build rifle will be heavy enuff for me, so if there is really nothing to be gained by the one piece mount I shall eschew it...

...however, it had long been my thought that the one piece configuration, if properly machined, would ensure and maintain proper alighnment of the rings, and relieve stress upon the scope itself...
