Went out this morning and ruined plan A by being late. Hen was already heading to gobbler and we weren't in between. Went on a plan B move and came between a mama black bear and her 2 little cubs, twice. She tried to flank us and lead us away from the cubs after the first contact.
Got to the plan B spot, called, saw a few young birds heading toward us. They got nervous and wouldn't come close enough to see all 5 at once and was ready to leave so I took the one with the best shot. 5 inch beard 15 pound monster couldn't withstand a 3.5" #5 magnum out of the 10 gauge! OK, not a monster but he will eat good!
On the way out saw 2 does feeding along the field edge. Took a break and watched for a while. That was all 3 big game species (in VA) within 400 yards of each other. Best part was I got to see it all with my old man.
I looked for an elk since we were having such a good wildlife watching day. (I dont count them as big game because VA doesnt have an elk tag) No luck. But they are turning them lose down here so maybe soon!
