Varget load 175 smk 1000 yard

OCW - OCW Overview - Dan Newberry's OCW Load Development System

But I ended up with:

Lapua brass
175 SMK
Federal 210M primers
43.5 grains of Varget

2600 fps out of my Rem 700 24" barrel.

Worked to 1200 yards (15.5 mils up) at Dan Newberry's Bang Steel course.

44.8 grains should be the next higher accuracy node.
pinecone, I'm shooting 175smks a bit faster than that with my sps and they were all over the place at 1000, and trans sonic. Pit guy said they sounded "funny" and random guy at range said 2650 was the magic # for 175 smk @1000. 178s and 190s were fine at 1000, and the 175s were great at 900. Wondering what I'm doing wrong? I'm impressed that you were getting good hits at 1200, esp since they had to be subsonic right? You weren't at altitude

Mine run right at 2650 fps or sometimes a bit slower and my ballistics calculator shows them to be about 1175 fps at 1K yards.

I would like a bit more, but that's what the nodes gives.

Good Luck,

RMD

I was at 2500 feet altitude.

According to JBM, at 1200 the bullet is 1111 fps. So just supersonic.

From that I have heard, the 175s are not as transoincally unstable as the 168s.

M118LR clone:

LC LR or Match brass
175 SMK or 178AMAX
42.5 Varget at 2.775" OAL
42.8 Varget at 2.805" OAL
CCI primers
LFCD

This runs just over 2600fps at 500' ASL out of my 23.6" Steyr.

In Lapua or Winchester brass, it's going to be 43.5-44gr Varget.

You need more speed with them. I had the same problem with a 20" remington my loads were 45grains in winchester and 43 in LC with a 175. Unless you are high up in altitude you really need all of them to be comfortably over 2600 which is hard with a short barrel unless it's a custom that is fast. Also the slower they go the more wind will grab them.

I was also fine with 190s too, they were 2500fps or a touch more.

My current fps is 2628 out of federal brass. Ive been using 45.0 but when I switched from federal to lapua brass for my 600 yard load I actually had to drop .5 grain powder to keep same accuracy.

My max load, but one of my go-to loads for 1K.

Lapua brass
44.2 grains of Varget
175 SMK
Winchester Primers

OAL for my rifle is 2.825" Just firmly touching the lands. But not jammed in tight enough that it grabs the bullet if you have to unload. I normally leave the round OUT of the chamber and the bolt open until I know I'm fixing to fire. That just helps keep the barrel a little cooler for when you have to fire them fast when the wind dies.

Good luck,
Victor

This is a hot load, so approach with caution... 175 SMK, Lapua brass, 45.9 gr of Varget, Fed 210m primers. This gives me 2730 fps and consistent .5 moa groups when I'm doing my part. This is out of a Remington 5r Milspec, 11.25 twist 24" barrel. I'm currently using this rifle and load for mid and long range F T/R.

It's interesting reading this thread, I recently qualified for my LGC's 600 yd range, and I was one of the 3 shooters out of 10 that was shooting hand loads. According to my data, my most consistant load was .308 41.9 gr of Win 748 shooting 168 smk's loaded to 2.8" oal. I've chrono'd this load severall times, and I average 2560 fps, granted I would not push this load out to 1k, but dam it worked really consistiant for me for my 600 quals. I had a chat with another member and he was shooting hand loaded 175 smk's @ 2590 fps ( also shooting .308)
