We use the vehicle trackers from Particle

Do you the person you are "watching" to know? That is the first biggie.

If you do, the wife and I share our location so we know where we are. When you drive a 1967 Fiat this feature can come in handy.

Google will do this for you, and before you freak about telling google, guess what buttercup, they already know. It can work between android and Iphone as well.

Now if you don't want them to know, that is where it is going to get more expensive. When setting ours up at work the update time is where they make their money, 1min updates are much cheaper then 1sec updates. You will also likely need cell service so you are going to pay for that, generally they are cheaper then a "normal" phone, but understand no cell no data reporting. The better loggers will have internal memory and will update as soon as they get signal again. These "hidden" units must have a cell signal as they use the same tech to locate phones, and that is not exact.

Option two is some form of GPS tracker tied to a cell device and that will update to a server somewhere, these can use both cell location and GPS for a better "lock", but you still rely on the data from cell to transmit.

There are also devices you can plug into your OBD2 port, and that will give you all kinds of info on the vehicle itself, handy if you manage a fleet and watch things for oil changes to speed to people being at their girlfriends house for a little afternoon delight. I doubt you need all that but just tossed it out there.

It is not inexpensive....any of it IMHO.

It really comes down to what you want to do, if you are on a bike, and you are known to hit a deer or two and your wife wants to look at her screen to make sure you get there ok, that is a free be.

But I get the sentiment. After all, I have my PTZ cameras out spying on my neighbor that blows leaves back onto my property. He hasn't done it lately because the tree hasn't shed all that much during this part of the season. We'll see in another 6 months. Hopefully by then, I'll have the tree trimmed far away from his side.

My truck has one of these, be a hard sell since you more than likely have ag exemption for cdl trackers. Driver would probably refuse to sign in, but I think it still tracks location as well as stops.

Check the laws of your state to see if this is legal. If you handle this wrong you may end up paying this employee.

Of course you could keep this under wraps and conjure an unrelated reason to fire someone.

I’m not sure how many vehicles you’re managing but this would be worth checking into. Plugs into the OBD port. Captures pretty much everything. Has a vehicle maintanence and diagnostic feature as well.

BTW, during the very brief period in which I worked for Fedex Ground, I did train on "jockeying" their half trailers around the inner lot. I was allowed to drive the tractor (with or without a trailer) anywhere inside the lot (private property) but never outside as that would require a CDL. Besides, that was their long haul drivers' responsibility. They delivered the double trailers into the lot, uncouple, and then re-couple a set of double trailers to take on their way. We handled all the jockeying inside the lot.

Point being, there was a speed/motion tracker in the tractor. If you sped, or made excessive motions like a short stop or (God forbid) hit something too hard, it would tattle on you. And yes, it recorded you, seated in the cab of the tractor.

Nope, but I was a truck driver, and worked with other truck drivers for the last 30 years. Any truck driver that steals time (more than a few minutes here and there) and takes naps when he knows he shouldn't will never change. I retired from UPS's LTL freight division and UPS is the King of employee surveillance. Millions and millions spent on DIADs, Telematics, supervisors physically following drivers, etc. Now and then it did weed out a bad employee, but what it did every day was breed hatred and distrust of Big Brown by all involved. So, if you're just concerned about this one guy have somebody follow him for a day. He'll fuck up.

Those that contemplate this for anything are likely going to find out exactly what you anticipate is going on. Make sure you really wanna know, before you get the evidence. The evidence is usually harder to deal with than the tracking. Sometimes not knowing something is better than knowing.

At my old neighborhood, whenever he knew a supervisor was following him, he would call the police and say a suspicious person was following their UPS truck around, lol.

Stealing company time, or time card problems can generally get the employer off the hook for unemployment.

Company vehicle I see no problem with it. I'm a truck driver and all our trucks have trackers. The boss actually got a speeding warming removed from mine and the company CVSA because the tracker on my truck proved I wasn't speeding.

OBDII is the best
Wired is ok but not as detailed. (Maybe because I have it on a UTV that doesn't get driven every day)
Wireless works however not nearly as good as the others.

You can either use the OBDll connector that they can "accidentally" unplug( also causes comm issues with some onboard modules), or the hidden hardwired device we use.

That is one issue we had with the OBD2 ones in the Ford trucks you can't plug them in and get the cover back on it. The Peterbilt trucks would flag the check engine light with comm errors
