Smart move by everybody. In a situation like Venezuela's right now, THIS is the time to firmly pick a side to be on. There is good and there is the bad. If you value Lisa's braces more than your life and possibly your entire family's lives, or just want to be an edgy fuck because you got made fun of in high school and see it as a chance to finally take your revenge against society, fuck around and find out. Because when people start playing by Burmese rules, that same uniform will become the wearer's own burial shroud very quickly. There are many variations of socialism. Old school Stalinist communism and National Socialism are actually almost identical. They seek to strengthen their countries into superpowers and modern Roman Empires through a singleminded population who selflessly sacrifice their lives working or serving in the imperial legions for the glory of the state. The Imperium of the Warhammer universe is a sci fi example of such. Nobody got a free pass. You are either a Space Marine or other type of legionnaire fighting for the Empire in far corners of the universe, or you are a worker toiling in one of the vast planet sized factories building war machines and starships for the legions.

The western leftists' idea of a socialist utopia is one where the state gives them free stuff so they can enjoy a life of debauchery and drug use, and uses it's muscle to clamp down on anything they object to. Basically like that old Germanic folktale where a monstrous and horrifically smelling ogre keeps a harem of abducted children who are forced to wash and scrub and feed the ogre. The ogre gets to lounge around and enjoy itself at the expense of a constantly rotating horde of slaves pampering it and giving it treats. In that folktale, a brave girl was able to convince the other children to stop working and all retreat to the corner of the cave. The ogre's stench grew until it overwhelmed the ogre's army of orc guards that were trying to swing their axes and spears at the kids and eventually a tide of maggots poured out of the ogre's blistering skin and devoured all of the monsters in there as the children escaped through an underground aqueduct that fed the cave.

Religious socialism has also occurred on a small scale. Modern cults like NXIVM and other extreme new age movements often have their members sacrifice all personal identity and freedoms to it's gurus, who are revered as demigods or prophets. What I'd like to see is percentages.....of do whats right...or support the .gov. Down there especially I'd expect the repercussions to be severe. Death to one's self and or family will be the punishment for turning on the system.

When you want to overthrow an evil government, you'll lose a lot less folks if you give the low raking pawn level henchmen the option to "join the revolution".
It's a well proven strategy that works very well. Less of your folks have to die and a quicker victory and it becomes a snowball effect, the more that quit their posts to "join the revolution" and all is good for them, the more and more of their buddies decide they don't want to be on the wrong side of things.

Millions of Venezuelans have suffered under Maduro and Chavez tyranny for 20 years. Standard of living is beyond comprehension compared to the years prior to the Communist regime.
