Because of the recent report about Remington rifles and safety concerns I made a goofy little 3 minute video of my Remington action. The rifle is a 40X so I don't know how much the trigger differs in terms of the safety from a standard trigger. I assume it's basically the same. It's adjusted to around a pound and a half and I did it myself. I compare it to the safety on my HS Precision. Anyway, here it is... If it downloaded OK.

The clips on CNBC were so derp.

Those guns obviously had their triggers adjusted by some bubba-smith. Those are the kinds of tests you to to make sure there is enough sear engagement for the safety to work.

Nice video.

Unfortunately having properly adjusted triggers is not a requirement apparently for comparison (when people dont understand how things work and chalk malfunctions up to voodoo).

I didn't see the report on the news last night but my Father in law did and since he knew that I had Remington 700's he asked if I was concerned.
As I understand it, if you fool with a factory trigger to the point that it is toooo light there might just be a problem.
It does concern me, but my question is, why is someone pointed a loaded firearm at someone and releasing the safety? Who is to say that these people didn't just touch the trigger while they were fiddling with the safety? It just sounds like a good opportunity for the gun bashers to have something to talk about.

Nice video, thanks for putting that up.
There seems to be a couple of factors that could contribute to this problem:
Bubba gunsmithing or even worse home bubba with too much time and not enough knowledge.
wear factor on the trigger assembly itself, I imagine it could wear out over use.
I suspect we will never know unless someone knowledgeable inspects the weapon and reports the findings.
At least this has prompted many a Remmy owner to inspect their gun to make sure it doesn't happen to them.

I had this discussion yesterday with a coworker who was all bashing rem cause he is fruit for Brownings

I mentioned that it mostly likely had alot to do with sombody dicking with the sear engagment , granted the rem safety desgine leaves alot to be desired , i much prefer the Win 70 style but still.

It all boils down to the lives that were lost due to the weapon going off are simply because the dumb ass handeling it didn't follow proper weapon handeling steps. If the muzzle was pointed in a safe direction at all times like its supposed to be then their would be no loss of life

My Dads R700 had some issues with slamfiring, and the safety not working correctly, after putting the gun on fire it discharged.
This was while he was hunting.

But he had the trigger worked on by a gunsmith.
He took the gun back to him, and tested it, no matter how hard the slam on the bolt, or any play with the safety/trigger. It wont go off.

Not to try to argue but there are still "unknowns" in his scenario. He may have inadvertently had his finger resting on the trigger. Or the gunsmith may have mis-adjusted the trigger. I still trust my Remingtons.

Nice video, but the problem is that just because your trigger didn't malfunction in the video, doesn't mean it does not have the potential to fail. This video pushes me further to make the video explaining the problem. The design and inherent issues are clearly not being explained properly to people.

I understand exactly what you're saying. I really only did it so people would have a visual external reference. I don't know what's going on inside my trigger. I just know it appears to be working the way I expect. To tell you the truth, I rarely even use the safety. When I go to the range I pretty much always load one round at a time and I'm sitting or laying behind the rifle with the muzzle pointed downrange before I do that. Once in a while I'll load up the magazine, but only if I'm practicing rapid-fire. Once again I'm behind the rifle with it pointed downrange before I ever get near the trigger and I don't stop firing until the Magazine is empty. Bolt stays open until I'm ready to fire. That's as safe as I know to be.

I have had occasion to be asked to stop in the middle of a magazine full, but then I open the bolt, release the floorplate latch and dump the rounds on the table.

Some people think all that's not necessary. I think people tend to get too comfortable around firearms when they're around them enough. Remember, these things are DANGEROUS... VERY DANGEROUS!!!... And must be treated as such. They're designed to kill and do it quite effectively. Let your guard down or try to show off or become lazy and you WILL fuck-up.

I agree with you 100%, safety safety safety. I also agree with you that people get complacent, and my belief is that more people need to be aware that there is a possibility with these triggers, due to the connector, to fire when you are not intending to, without your finger on the trigger. I think if people are aware of why this can happen, they will be more conciencious of their firearm handling. When you KNOW you cannot trust the fire control, you will handle the firearm differently. That is a vastly different approach that what I commonly hear...

"I have owned 30 of these firearms, and never once had a problem" "there isn't a problem with these triggers, it is someone monkeying around with them"

Let's just stop denying that these triggers require special handling if we insist on using them. Will they fail every time? NO. Can any of them fail? YES. Can we tell when they will? NO. Ok, then lets handle them all, like they could..

It sounds like you already know to handle any firearm in this fashion, so why don't we encourage that behavior, instead of saying there isn't a problem?

Personally, I'm looking forward to a demonstration of what could go wrong and why. Frankly, when I decided to video my rifle I didn't know if it was going to work or not (Because as I said I rarely use the safety). I'm not going to sit here and say that just because I've never had a problem that one doesn't exist. To do so without knowing exactly what I'm talking about would be irresponsible. I sincerely hope you can put something together to demonstrate the problem.

Whether there is a problem with the triggers or not, as long as everyone handled their rifles in a "safe manner" you shouldn't have to worry. I know, shit happens. As I said in another thread, these thing are mechanical and man made, they can and will fail. Add in human adjusting, you increase that risk. Prove that no one messed with any of these rifles (triggers), then you will have an argument and complaint. Until then mark it down to just shit happens, be more careful. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for anyone that has shot a loved one, but, don't smoke cigerettes for years and then blame the tobacco companies because you have cancer!

I watched it. Basically reporting on people not practicing safe gun handling and trying to blame Remington. One boy was killed when he went on the other side of horse trailer and his mother was unloading her 700 with the muzzle pointed into the trailer instead of up in the air. At the very least you would want to have it in the air so you wouldn't put a hole in your trailer I would think.

Another guy shot his foot off. Obviously the muzzle was not pointed in a safe direction. Another guy shot his buddy in the wrist. Again muzzle pointed at the wrist is not such a good idea. Another person was killed when someone was unloading the rifle in the house. Again all the gun safety courses I have taken never mentioned that it is a good idea unloading a rifle in the house and even if you are why are you pointing the gun at a wall rather than the ceiling????

Then the showed some snipers on the range where the gun would go off when they touched the bolt. OK, time to take the gun to the armor and quit dicking around with it.

Guns are mechanical devices and are subject to wear and failure just like anything else. That is why it is always necessary to point the muzzle in a safe direction, even when you know it is unloaded!

I think they should do an expose on cars that their owners allow the brakes to wear down to nothing and then go flying off a cliff.

I own a Rem 700, tested the safety on it, works fine. Maybe these accidents are caused by people adjusting those x-mark triggers to their lightest possible pull and being unsafe with their gun. When my rifle is loaded I control my muzzle direction at all times without question, because other peoples lives are at risk and I am responsible. These accidents quoted above are obviously a bunch of idiots with guns, who the hell points a loaded weapon at their child or friend? I could never imagine doing that personally.
