I best keep my mouth shut and just post the facts.
Dear ________,
Our Democrat Governor, yet again, has shot from the hip with feckless guidelines that disregard the importance of faith and trample the liberties of individuals.
Today, Governor Northam announced new COVID-19 restrictions that will go into effect at midnight this Sunday. These new restrictions include lowering the mandatory age for masks to five years old, strengthening the ability of Virginia’s Department of Health to fine and/or threaten with imprisonment any patron, employee, business, or church that is not abiding by Northam’s directives, and limiting all public and private gatherings to 25 individuals among a few other things.
The first major impact that this new restriction will have is effectively shutting down most churches again. While many churches have facilities large enough to socially distance with well beyond 25 people, the Governor’s mandate penalizes them and doesn’t take into consideration facility size, processes, or any other factors. They are once again told they cannot worship in-person by our Governor.
If there has ever been a need for all of us to gather regularly in prayer and worship it is right now. Our Commonwealth needs God’s divine hand of protection and guidance as we fight COVID-19 together and endure the overarching government dictates that restrict our freedom of religion from a Governor that has become increasingly hostile to our basic liberties. If churches still carry out their God-given right to gather and worship, our Governor has commissioned the Department of Health to fine you and your church with a Class 1 Misdemeanor which equates up to a $2,500 fine and up to a year in jail. This is unacceptable in Virginia and inconceivable in America under our Constitution.
United States Supreme Court Judge Samuel Alito recently ruled in Nevada that similar dictates from state government were unjustified and unfair when they limited churches to 50 person limits while allowing Casinos to operate at 50% of their fire-code capacities. Increasingly, politicians are becoming more and more intolerant of our religious freedoms and neglect to recognize the importance that faith plays in our civilization. Make no mistake - places of worship and houses of faith ARE ESSENTIAL in Virginia.
I pledge to always stand up and fight for our religious freedoms, right to worship, and for our personal liberties to be guarded. I encourage all Virginians to wear masks and socially distance, but I also demand that our Governor respect our constitutionally protected, but God-given rights. These two are not in odds with one another. We can have rights and also defeat COVID-19. They do not have to be mutually exclusive as Democrats in Richmond seem to think.
Sincerely,
Delegate Glenn Davis
Candidate for Lieutenant Governor
