I chamfer with the Forster's tool right now, and was wondering if there was any benefit in using a VLD chamfer tool over a standard one.

    Re: VLD chamfer tool necessary?

Might make a difference, but I use the standard Forester unit with VLD's checking very closely for shaved jackets, etc (even pulled bullets to double-check) as long as I have everything lined up and seat slowly/smoothly, never felt the need for a VLD chamfer.

Maybe a solution looking for a problem.

I get shaved jackets pretty often. THought it was from too much neck tension at first, but it happens with .001" NT too.

I use a VLD on an RCBS trimmate center. The standard chamfer tool on the trim mate blows (at least the one that came on mine did). Subsequently in pursuit of concentric chamfering I got an LE Wilson VLD chamfer tool that fits in the Wilson case trimmer. Works great. Much better than the trimmate for concentricity. However it works too good and I over chamfered a few .338LM cases and had microthin case mouths that would flake with thumbnail pressure. So If you get a VLD, just understand that the steeper angle can let you over chamfer much more quickly than a standard chamfer angle.

I chuck mine in my drill on a rod extension. I just let them have a kiss of the case mouth. The RCBS std. profile chamfer, like the hand held ones, aren't as sharply angled and just didn't cut as fast as I wanted.

I'd be a liar if I said it made a huge difference but the bullets do seat easier, especially flat base bullets!

    Re: VLD chamfer tool necessary?

I prefer the VLD chamfer over the standard chamfer angle. The bullet goes into the case mouth a little easier on a FL sized case with a VLD chamfer. Sometimes it will put more pressure from the seating stem on the bullet and score it more. The VLD tool decreases the edge point inside the neck and doesn't make it as sharp as a standard VLD tool. You can feel it when you seat a bullet between the two chamfers. I use a VLD tool on all my brass to avoid shaving the jacket and/or deforming the bullet.

This, I purchased one for my prep center since the one that comes with it kinda blows, was a good buy.

I use the VLD chamfer and really noticed the seating pressure difference. I just screw it into the RCBS case prep station and give each one a little kiss with the chamfer followed by an inside brush with 000 steel wool to polish it up a little.

+1.... It's the only one I use whether loading VLD's or regular rounds.....
