Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

had time to sight in the wsm with the vortex on it today- i know it's not a true 5 shot group- only 3 were for a group, the lower two were for zeroing. the wind picked up & started blowing snow all over me, so i quit after these. notice how i adjusted the wrong direction for elevation? i'm cool like that.

Mine just showed up at my office. S/N 0000098, and it came with the zero stop shims. I like it a lot. Wish it was FFP, but for the price, it's a deal. I want poke's extra one.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

This is really a question for Scott at Vortex, and he may or may not be able to disclose this but...

I've noticed that Midway has a number of special Midway only scopes that are frequently for sale. An example would be the Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 with mildots that is frequently on sale. This particular buckmaster is not available any where else (as far as I can tell).

Any chance this new Viper HS is a similar deal.. a Midway exclusive that will be around for awhile or was this more of a one shot deal?

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

M47Patton,

I called VORTEX and they varified that it IS an exclusive to MIDWAY.

I am sure Scott will post as well when he see's this.

* and mine is due in tomorrow

I can NOT wait!!!

Matt.

According to the Midway catalog, this scope is a Midway exclusive. In the catalog, they have two pages of scopes from various manufacturers that are Midway exclusives, and this was one of them.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Sh!t, just missed it. Spoke to a representative and shows a 6/30 tentative ship date. Just picked up my 700P and I just can't wait that long!

Any alternatives around the 400 price range? Looking for similar brightness and range. I was thinking about the falcon ffp 4x14x44 to hold me over for now?

The short answer is no. You could pick up a SWFA Super Sniper for $300 to hold you over and then sell it later. The Viper HS is worth the wait.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Dunno if its been asked yet or not, but does the glass seem any clearer/brighter than the standard 6.5-20x44 Vortex Viper, or is it the same?

Mine arrives tomorrow...

I dont know, the 6.5-20 was my first choice but I held out and stumbled on this deal. Only difference I know is that the 6x has a glass etched reticle and the 5x has the wire.

Mine gets here on Wednesday.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

So mine came in today, #21 it says. I can't believe how awesome the turrets feel. Looks pretty clear and the eye relief seems to be good too. I haven't mounted it yet, plan on doing that tomorrow night. My only complaint is a pretty big piece of dust on the inside of the from objective lens, though I don't see it looking through the scope, even though its almost dead center. I'm using this on my 5R until I decide on a higher end optic. I'll send it back to Vortex for cleaning and then mount it on my 22.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

A question related to reticle visibility (older eyes): <span style="font-weight: bold">How does it work on black targets at distance - say 10" steel plates at 500 - 700 yds?</span>

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I use a medium dark green. White doesn't work well for seeing your shots at range. Bright orange supposedly works well, but I haven't tried it.

I have used the green at 600 yards with 15x and no problem, it does get harder when all of the trees is behind it...so I will try orange at some point.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: LVdubbin</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Shootist, why not hit the steel with some white spray paint? </div></div>

I generally do, but most others use black and I cannot always go out and paint over what's in use. We use black in the 3-Gun matches as well since the flashers are orange (not that this scope is intended for 3G).

Bottom line - I need a reticle that's not so thin as to be nearly unusable on black targets - my PST 1-4 falls into this category, even at 200-300 meters. I have no problem with my SN4 1.5-6 FFP, even at extended range for that size optic; ditto for a NF 2.5-10 NP-R2

Just trying to get a feel for how the Viper HS 5-15 will work. Possibly the higher magnification will take care of things?

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I have used mine on black target out to 600yds and have had no problem seeing the reticle. The reticle is not too thin, and very usable at all ranges I have used it to so far with no trouble identifying it and focus is very fast. Hopefully this helps.

Big help - thanks. I now have one on back-order to replace a M8-6x Leupold MOA/Mil on a bolt gun.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Got mine today as well! As noted above, these turrets are super nice! The paralax and mag knobs were pretty tough to turn when first opened the package but after running them back and forth are seeming to loosen up nicely.

It's very overcast here today tough to really give a fair clarity comparison at this time.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I don't think it's been mentioned, but the optic includes a sunshade and bikini style lense covers.

Also included are the zero stop shims that have been mentioned.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

#273 showed up at my door this evening; shims were in the box.

Mounted it on a Savage 12FV .223 with Weaver 20MOA base and Burris XTR low rings and there's plenty of clearance with 13.5 mils up from a boresight zero.

I really like the turret feel and a quick look across the neighborhood after mounting was very favorable. I hope to compare it side-by-side with my Bushnell 4200 Tactical 6-24x50FFP this weekend.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

After getting a chance to look through the scope last night and this morning.... I AM IMPRESSED...

Since some are looking for some USE reports.... I tell ya what... I am holding M4 quals tomorrow... SO.... I will get to the range early and test this scope out...

I will report back tomorrow evening on how it did..

IF ANYONE wants something specific looked at or tested post it up here and I will do my best to do it.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Mine arrived today, #56. I looked through it and my SWFA 10x HD and couldn't tell a difference in glass, honestly. The turrets are very positive and audible. Parallex is very smooth as well. I cant wait to get it mounted up.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I just got mine today. Was on the fence about this optic ever since I got the email from Midway. Checked last Friday at 1am and saw it was back in stock so I pulled the trigger.

It is replacing a SS 10x42 that was working just fine, but I felt this was a nice upgrade.

Here is is mounted on my AR.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Guys,

Sorry... have to postpone my range trip.... Got a call out for a missing person.

I WILL be at the range on SUNDAY morning and will do a full write up and picture post.

Thanks and sorry.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

So I got to shoot with the new Viper today. Was sunny to start, then overcast with a brief period of rain. At 15x I had no problems seeing the red bullseye on a 3" shoot-n-c at 100y during any of those conditions.

Eye relief is AMAZING and a lot more forgiving than the SS 10x42 it replaced. I am really happy about that. The 10x42 had a really small "pocket" where you get 100% sight picture. Much easier to find on the HS.

I didn't get to play with the turrets too much because out of the box I only needed 2 clicks down and 1 click left. I installed the zero stops and centered my turrets at the range. Simple enough procedure.

Can't wait to try it at distance.

I already want to replace my 1-4 MTAC with a Viper PST now.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Got mine mounted today on my TBA M40A1. I can't believe the eyebox on this thing. When mounting it, even at 15x I could run it back and forth in the rings as far as it would go and I still couldn't get it to shadow out.

I hope to wring it out this weekend. It's light but seems to be built very well. I needed to keep the optic on this rifle KISS, and at a good price, since we just had a kid and the funds are being leveraged elsewhere at the moment.

My rifle has had more tubes mounted on her than a mining town whore on payday: S&B, USO, NF, SWFA, Leupold, Bushnell... with my current financial position and aging eyes, a nice big uncluttered mil-dot reticle, 15x top-end, quick focus eyepiece, and an outstanding price point are all just right. Thanks to Vortex and Midway for bringing us this glass!
