Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot
OK.... HERE IS MY REVIEW...
First off I know there are several people that are waiting on orders to be filled and there has been issues with that as well... All I can say is hold on and wait it out.
Background on me: I am a cop... NO I am not attached to a rifle unit, srt, swat, etc... I am issued a M4... but I am just a CID/Internal Affairs guy that has shot competitions locally for about 14 years. I am NOT a pro.. I am NOT paid for this review... and I am NOT past or present military... Just love my toys and want the best bang for the buck WITHOUT sacrificing quality and dependability...
REVIEW..
Yesterday before some rifle qualifications I was able to get out (2) personal rifles to sight in and play with. Being the range master and dept gun bunny has its advanatages
Sooo I brought out (2) Remington 700 PSS rifles in .308.
1st one is a cut down 18 inch with a vortex and the 2nd is a factory 24 inch with a vortex.
Both are in factory stocks, and have 20 MOA bases and medium rings. I did a quick laser bore sighting inside my house to get them some what on paper...
I set up a target at 100 to sight in and suprisingly 2 rounds later I was on spot with the 18"... A little fine tunning and it was extremely on..
I quickly moved over to the 24" and had the same results...
Liking the 18" and seeing some VERY impressive accuracy results out of it, I decided to concentrate on playing with the scope on it.
I did a quick box drill and its was dead on.... I rolled through the windage and elevation SEVERAL times and it came right back on PERFECTLY.
I decided what the hell... I will UNLOADED of course drop the rifle on the butt stock ( NOT TRYING TO DAMAGE MY RIFLE AND THROW IT COMPLETELY DOWN) for a little shock testing and shot again... DEAD ON...
I played with about 20 more rounds pushing it only to 200 yards and was VERY impressed.
The knobs are VERY nice... they have a very positive feel to them and the focus knob is VERY user friendly as well. Some may have their ideas about the reticle... To me it is fine and does the job very well.
I have a Leupy Mark 4 TMR 6.5 - 20 - 50mm on a competition rifle and I will have to be honest... side by side...with glass, knobs, clarity, ease of use, reticle.... they are damn even and might even push in the Vortex's side...
I have to say that for the price... even with price NOT being considered, I would place this scope in the competition range of those higher end at a price point of $850-1100... It MAY even compete with the NightForces and others at the $1600 range..
I know that some will argue the WIRE RETICLE... but in all honesty, wire reticles today are NOT the same as years past...
As a fair review and a decent field testing I would HIGHLY recommend the scope and would NOT hesitate to use this scope on a department Police rifle. DISCLAIMER... It should be like all scopes tested first and verified before putting in the field.
That said, both HS scopes I have are DEAD ON and function perfectly with NO defects at all. I am VERY pleased and I know they will be worth the wait.
I am actually in the same boat as many of you. I am ordering another one and will be waiting as well.
My offer stands.. if there is anyone that wants something looked at... tested... just post it up.. I will do it.
I did NOT go out with a camera... I was not here to do a test and show everyone my target and measure groups... Just a fair and honest assessment of a scope that has garnered ALOT of attention and rightfully so.
If this is the steps that Vortex is moving in and they improve from this point even more.... they will definately be raising the bar for other manufactures.
Thanks,
Matt (LEO SOUTH GA.)
