It was inaccurate information given to me by an unknowing rep, but not a "RUMOR".

We've all been told "something" from various sources. Just enjoyed Scott commenting and hopefully putting all at ease. Point taken though and no jab intended.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Keep waiting guys. It's worth it. I took my serial #51 Viper HS out to a Vapor Trail Tactical PSR 1 class this weekend and was ringing steel at 400-600 fairly consistently and out to 960 occasionally (the shooter isn't as good as the gun/scope). Scope tracked really well. Zero stop was nice to have. I got to look through Leupold, Premier, S&B, IOR, and Sightron and while my HS wasn't quite up to par with these on glass quality, I was pretty surprised by how small the difference was between mine and several of the others (although I now get what all the S&B love is all about). Vortex got this one right.

Hey, I'll wear a free hat anytime I'm given one...are you listening Vortex?

If so, you deserve a sound spanking. Millions of Scouts worldwide would agree.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I have one of these on back order but I am going with a different scope. If anyone is interested in buying it from me I will sell it to you for $450 shipped when I get it. You don't have to pay until I get the scope but I would like some type of commitment or I will just cancel the order. PM me if your interested.

Not the best pics but until I can get better here some more:

The view through the scope is better than pictured; I think my camera induces some color fringing/ chromatic aberration when I take pictures through optics. The tree on the right is about 6-7 hundred yards out and the tree line in the back is around 1400, there was also some pretty heavy mirage present when this was taken today.

in this picture below you can see that I shortened the Seekins base by about a half inch so and touch up painted it so I could get my scope further back.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Just got mine today from a second party sale and I am very impressed. The eye relief on this scope is incredible for the price. It has to be the most forgiving I have seen on a scope under 1k$. Does anyone know why the sunshade doesn't screw on all the way? I see in pics they are all like that.

Same here.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Same here I really need it by the end of August. Doesn't look like thats going to happen. It would be nice if the dude from vortex would chime in now. Looks like all the guys that were saying sept. delivery were right. Its a good deal but my waiting may be done.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I talked to midway as well and it looks like it will be sept. for my order placed 4/16. It sucks but I'm glad I got the weaver 3-10 mil/mil to hold me over. It has been dialed to 1000 and back many times and is not bad for the $299. Not sure if they are still running that special, but it could be a cheap option for anyone still holding out for the vortex.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I had one on order at the sale price and my order was to be here on 6/30 also. Waited... then I canceled it. If I had known about Boilerup's post I wouldn't have canceled it.

If you are looking for something to get you by check out the new mil-quad swfa ss 12x. $299 for the scope. That's what I did.

Used it out to 700 yds on my .223 no problems. I had reservations about 12x being enough for me at those ranges, but it is more than adequate.

Good luck.

When I ordered the expected date in stock was 6/30. I talked to cs at midway today and they said ALL orders wont be in til September. Just thought some of y'all might want to know. </div></div>

So even if my BO expected ship date says June 30, they dont expect to get any more and be able to ship them out until September? That may change my plans....have already been getting too itchy to wait until end of June. I will not wait until Sept. to put glass on my new rifle for sure. I'm ready to start shooting it now....if this is truly the case, then I will be looking at other options for sure despite how good a deal this scope is.

*EDIT* I called midway - they confirmed - Viper has pushed back the ship date on all current orders not filled. Will be "end of the summer" per the CS rep at Midway. So, time to decide on alternate glass for my new rifle. Now, I'll have to return the rings and BC caps and buy new ones since I ordered them for this scope when I ordered it, dammit.

</div></div>

We havent changed anything, so if it said June 30th when you ordered, as far as I know that should still be a fair "estimate". I think what is happening is that they are getting so many orders for these scopes that they have to continuously bump the date back for new purchasers and the CS rep that you talked may not be aware of that.

Hopefully nothing happens in the meantime and I have to eat my words, but like I said we have not changed any delivery dates. So hopefully you guys will get your scopes close to the date that it said when you ordered.

Best Regards,
Scott </div></div>

Rumor Control Central has just been "Closed" lmao. Thanks Scott for keeping us informed, it's appreciated. Next</div></div>

Rumor Control Central has just been "Reopened".

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Rumor Control Central "IS" open!! LMAO. MidwayUSA now has an availability date on their site of 8/9/2012 for the HS. It's here when it's here, but sooner is certainly better. In the meantime I picked up an MC Conquest 4.5-14x44 with Rapid Z800 to fill the time gap

Got it from Cameraland NY but when I inspected it I found the reticle jumping during power ring turning

Called Zeiss, spoke with Karen and am now waiting for the new one they said they would ship. Too much down time.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Ok, the review I planned has proven to require more time than I have, so no pics. I have compared it side by side with a nikon prostaff 3-9 ($150), a leupold vx-II 6-18 ($450), a SS 5-20 ($1200), and most recently a hawke 6-24 sf ($270).

Glass- SS (by a long way), Leupold, hawke (blew me away! Close call between it & the loopy) vortex, Nikon
Turrets/ adjustments- SS, vortex (both flawless, but the ss has much more travel), Leupold (much better since its trip to Oregon), hawke (haven't done much testing with it yet), Nikon (hated)
Eye box- SS, Leupold, hawke, Nikon, vortex (kinda tricky at full power & while shooting into the sun)
Eye relief- SS, vortex, Leupold, hawke, Nikon

The SS is at least 3x's the scope. It's not even fair to put it in this group.

The leupold amazes me, maybe I got lucky wih this one. It's had a rough 8 years on my elk gun. The turrets crapped out last fall, but they fixed it up & put a new reticle in it & now it tracks just fine. I've spent hundreds of hours looking through it & never had a hint of eye fatigue. It's a keeper.

The nikon- threw it in because it was handy.... Now it's gone- sold. I don't miss it.

The hawke- the glass blows me away. Less overall eye relief, but more clarity, better color, and no fatigue so far (it's still pretty new though). I still need to put many rounds downrange to give any valuable info about it, but so far I'm diggin it.

The vortex- tracks great, easy to set up, great eye relief, but I'm not in love with the glass. I guess after all the I've read & heard about these I may have had overly high expectations. It's not bad at all, but I thought it would be better. Shooting into the morning sun was difficult- glare & chromatics. At our last dawn range session my buddy's falcon was easier to spot through. I suspect I'll be selling it & ordering another SS.

Disclaimer- I'm no optics expert! This is all just my opinion. I shoot a lot, and most of it is rimfire from 50-400 yards. When I get the center fires out I usually shoot at 700+ yards, so I'm picky about glass & tracking. The only shooting I do at 100 is for zeroing & load development. None of my equipment gets babied.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I ordered one of these months ago like many of you and I was wondering if anyone has any range experience with them. How far were you able to use it and what size targets? I'm wondering if this will be suitable for 800m + or if I need to go up to 20-24x? If nothing else this should make a great scope on a precision 5.56 build.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I've used mine to engage a 8" round steel plate @ 650yd with a bolt action 223...no problems making hits and with "only" 15x it was easy to spot splash on misses.

Here's a couple to hold you over.

No problem hitting 12" steel plate @ 555 yds with a 10-15mph full value wind...

I plan on using this scope out to 1,000 yds once I get a chance. 800m would be no problem for this scope. Everyone who shoots my gun compliments the scope. I couldn't be happier with my purchase! It truely is the best deal going right now.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

Thanks for the re-assurance, now I just gotta finally choose which 700 I want. Tempted to go with a 5r, but if I get an AAC or base 700 I could have a chassis system for about the same price as the 5r.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I have one sittin here in box that I think i will put on a SPR. That about ordering a second one for a 700 build to be completed later this year. I think it would be great for 556 ranges but am unsure for further on out. I guess I will see, hard to pass up for the price but my buddy made me a good offer the other day.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

does anyone have any experience with the 4x16x44 viper vortex HS LR. I am looking to put together a Deer Rifle and thought that this maybe a good fit. Originally liked the 5x15 but the 4x16 is available and looks to carry the same options.

Any input?

One of the great things about the 5-15x is the matching reticle and turrets (mil/mil), and you lose that with the 4-16x for a BDC reticle. I personally don't think BDC reticles are very useful for anything but hunting, so in my opinion, you can do better for the price. Once the HS FFP scopes are released, that really changes things. But then the price will be up near the FFP PST's.

Re: Vortex Viper HS 5-15x44 Mil-Dot

I have a Rem. 700 stainless action with an HS Precision stainless barrel in .300 win mag. Shoots extremely well with the right loads.

I'd like to sell my HS precision stock and get a much more adjustable chassis. Trouble is I can't decide on the chassis. Remington Defense still has not put the XM2010 chassi on sale yet and when they do it will likely cost $1,000. minimum.

OR I may sell it all and get a Desert Tactical Arms in .300 win mag and .338 LM. Love that rifle. Shot it and it was VERY accurate in handloaded 300 gr. SCENAR pills at 100 yds.
