I am not sure if this should be posted here, but I'll give it a shot...does anyone have any recommendation for a water filtration system for emergency situations. Kind of like a Big Berkey, Katadyn Gravidyn or an Aquarain gravity-type units. The only issue I have read is that those units are not NSF certified. I have zero knowledge about this stuff. The Katadyn Gravidyn advertises an abililty to filter some chemicals, germs, radiation, etc...all of the info is making my head spin!! ANy help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all.

It depends on what your usage is. If you are wanting to purify large amounts of water, possibly in a grid-down scenario, I recommend using the Black Berkey filter elements in a Berkey Light filtration system. I use one of these at my house.... daily. If you were buying the filters or just "preparedness" reasons, just save the money you would spend on the Berkey light and just buy two sets of the Black Berkey filter elements. You can install them on HDPE food-safe buckets and filter your water that way.
If you live in a city and there is a possibility of your water containing flouride or heavy metals.... you can/should add the PF-2 filter elements.
If you are wanting a filtration system to use while in the field, etc. I recommend the MSR miniworks. The bottom of the filter is threaded to the same pitch as Nalgene bottles and MSR's water bladders. It makes refilling all the water in my kit a snap while in the field.

I use an MSR Miniworks EX filter and it works great. Its the same model I used in the Marines. The filter is easy to clean but will clog easily in silty water.
For a survival situation it is tough to beat bleach. Two or three drops in a canteen and your ready to drink in fifteen minutes. A couple times I used an MSR to filter some sketchy looking water and we added a few drops of bleach for good measure.
Iodine works great too but it takes an acquired taste to use long term.
