Weather report for our area yesterday said 2-4" of snow possible at higher elevations. After two FEET fell and continued to accumulate I came to the realization that the weather people in Montana are fucking idiots. There has got to be some kind of weather dart they throw at a board with various weather conditions and snow fall. There is absolutely NO WAY these people should be paid for their work. No-Freakin-way....

So I just spend the last hour driving my dozer down my two mile driveway to access our county road. Which has not, as of yet, been plowed either. Wonderful

It's a wonderland here, it really is. No people, big game animals everywhere and blue ribbon trout streams within walking distance. I just wish we had some kind of warning for stuff like this. We are prepared, always prepared. Firewood cut, hatches buttoned every season about this time. Never enough time to get everything done but it would have been nice to see this one coming.

Hell, it's the opposite where I live in Indiana. Weather man starts screaming "snow! mountains of snow! It'll be the snow apocalypse"! And we get 2 inches.

some say it has never snowed in Wyoming. All
snow is simply blown in from Montana.

October 1st is always a wrath crapshoot. I have experienced 2 feet of snow... insane wind and one year it was close to 100 degrees

I love to read the stories of people "getting back to nature"....in the suburbs of some city. It's hilarious to me also the number of people that perish here every season from sheer stupidity. This time of the year we have seen an 80 degree temp swing in twelve hours. People wander through the wilderness here looking to take picturges of the pretty bears only to get eaten by one. This is a true wilderness, make no mistake. Montana will kill you if you let it. Living the way that we do, with the closest thing resembling a town at 53 miles and the closest neighbor at over five miles, we have learned to work with the mountains instead of against them. We watch the mountains across the valley from us for our weather. When it disappears we know the weather will be here within the hour. Make no mistake, we love it here. I have never seen a more peaceful place. Just sometimes you have to use a bull dozer to go and get your mail....

Your warning should come in the form of calling someone in the panhandle of Idaho and ask them to look up and see what they see. That's probably the most accurate weather report you will get.

I made the mistake if believing the weather reports on a late season camping trip up to my elk hunting happy place. Said 20 percent of snow flurries. That night it dumped 2 feet of snow. I ended up getting sick that night and started to decline fast. Luckily I had a paramedic buddy with me and he knew I was in deep shit if w didn't get off the mountain. Probably wouldn't have made it if it wasn't for him. Since then I call bull shit on every weather report.

The weather controls everything we do this time of year. We hunt every day the weather is good enough to get out. In the winter we leave with enough supplies to stay out all night. Food, water, sleeping bags and tent. You just never know what will happen here. Where we live and hunt you aren't likely to see another person. Not even along the roads. Sometimes you pass three trucks, sometimes none for days or a week. Ranchers with cows are the only reliable emergency scenario because they feed them hay here in the winter. If you find cows wadded up against a fence there will soon be a rancher to feed them, might be the next day but that's better than having to walk 2-30 miles to find a house or anyone that could lend a hand. Cell phones don't work very well either. If you get out, you're on your own and you better be prepared for it.

You should live in Oklahoma. One year they forecasted snowmageddon. They said it was going to be the worst snowfall and high winds we've ever seen. I bet 70-80% of the schools in the state canceled school the night before.
I think the average snowfall that night and morning was 1/4" state wide.
Fast forward a couple of years they forecasted one of the worst ice storms to hit the state. Said it was going to life threatening to try and go out the next day. Nicknamed Icepocalypsie, was going to be inches upon inches of ice , most of the state would be without power.
lol the temperature never got below the 40's.

I just have to laugh to keep from crying. We check the NOAA weather report three or four times a day just to get the real story. Sometimes it changes hourly, sometimes faster. I have seen the weather change for the entire week in one afternoon. We have "Special" high elevation weather, not the normal everyday weather but the weather where we have to go to a little section off the beaten path to find. When we hear the weather on the radio we just laugh. Whatever they forecast we are exponentially worse or nothing at all.

I think those fires are still burning over near Missoula. I was just looking at that the other day. Hell it was snowing here today for about 2 hours.

Nope we're good on the wet side! There will be some lingering smoke from stumps, bigger down logs etc. till the snow buries them. We got up to a white world this a.m. and still snowing.We're a little under 4000 elevation.

LOL! Yeah, we've heard. Most of my time has been points further east (Hardin mostly), so I'm familiar with the winds. We were shooting one day out to 835yds, and I had 5.2 mils of windage, and was still having to hold left of the target to get impacts...just had to keep an eye on the prairie grass, and wait for it to bow over the same degree as the last shot. Fun times...

One of the members here has hosted a LR get together/shoot for several years out near Glasgow. I've been to a couple of them and both times we had measured winds over 40 mph.

Makes interesting shooting a 308 out to 1500 yards. There's a reason I like to shoot the 208 Amax.

YUP! It gets sporty around here this time of year. We have a mile match that I shot a few months back, Then a few of us get together locally to shoot the canyons. Now that is fun and at about 1400 yards across three draws will get your blood up. We need to put another match together in this area. I have the perfect place but it will be a hell of a thing. Won't be a zero'd CSI in the house, I promise that...LOL

The land provides enough food to feed an army if you let it, all you need is a place to keep the rain off and a little diesel money.

On annual basis Semi trucks blow over on I90 just east of town. This time of year the winds begin to pick up and the range in Livingston will normally experience a breeze 10-15 gusting to 25.

Right on. I spent some time in Bridger too skiing the bootpack access along the ridge. I kept bouncing around between Bridger and Big Sky and Jackson Hole. Ended up somewhere along the line up in Washington and got work at Mt. Baker and stayed for a few years. Was a fun run in the mountains. Glad I did it when I was younger and had a thirst for high peaks with heavy snowfalls and open spaces.....lived in my truck camper for many thousands of miles stopping at every single mountain pass with snow covered peaks.....
Montana was overall the most amazing state I've ever spent time in. Can make any man feel small out there.

While I love living in Texas, one of these days I'll probably have to go somewhere desolate and cold once all the nice easy to live places are over run.
I estimate Texas has about 10 to 20 more good years before it gets ruined (it could change if the good people fight back, but too few understand).

I visited Montana several times while guiding elk hunts. I was based in Colorado, living in the south. Montana is one of the last places in the lower 48 that has true wilderness. Not KOA campground with roads driving up to and out of the showers, true wilderness. It is entirely possibly here to walk out into the wilds and not see another soul. The weather here is unpredictable and will kill you if you let it. The only month we have no possibility of snow and cold temps is July essentially. It takes a special sort to make it work here. It takes seasons to learn what's what and move with it. That's the reason I love it. You can't come here and buy your way in. You have to learn and earn it. It keeps out the riff raff and big talkers for sure.
