I received my Badger Ordnance base and rings and the base has been attached. Now, to my dismay, I forgot to order a scope mounting kit when I ordered the rings! I found a decent priced one from Midway USA and it should be delivered by Aug 1st. Looks like it will be another week or so before I can go shooting

What a dumb ass move! Live and learn I guess.

Re: What a bonehead

I wanted to do it right and this is my first scope mount if it wasn't already obvious. I have to lap the scope rings and align them properly I thought? If I don't do these things, wont it be an absolute bitch to get the rounds on or anywhere near the target?

Midway hoopla. Lap kit, scope level, torque wrench. The torque wrench is the most useful part of that kit, but not needed.

I'll pm you my phone number, call me, I'll walk you through the basics in 5 minutes. Lapping has nothing to do with being on paper and isn't the least bit necessary for your circumstance.

I ordered one from Wheeler, guess it comes with a lapping tool and alignment pieces, and a level/level/level? I'm a little new to this to!

Re: What a bonehead

Badger rings shouldn't need to be lapped.

1.Buy a feeler gauge set from autozone.
2.Set scope in rings, just lightly tighten rings so scope will not easily move.
3. Set your eye relief
4. Place feeler gauges under flat part on scope to scope base making them fit snug
5. As you tighten rings slowly take feeler gauges out.
6. Snug up rings Do not over tighten
7. setup rifle at 25 yards pull bolt out of rifle and find your target by looking through barrel, then adjust scope to target
8. move out to 50 yards and take a shot and veryify point of aim vs point of impact is close
9. move out to 100 yards and fine tune your adjustments.
10. Your done, would check ring torque when you do get your torque wrench in.

Re: What a bonehead

Feeler gauges are a great method. However, let me caveat that by saying they did nothing to mount my Henny. The gauges I have worked flawelessly on the PR 5x25, as the square/flat part under the scope was much longer than the henny. No matter what combo of gauges I used, I was either too tight to pull them out, or scope was fully seated in rings and gauges weren't compressed.

So for shits and grins, I ran some levels on what I thought was square, but was off by 3 degrees. Same check when I mounted my PR was dead on though. Just an FYI, get more than one gauge. IF i had one that had thinner gauges, or more of them, I would have been golden I think.

Re: What a bonehead

The alignment bars are very useful. They will tell you if either your action, base, or rings, are out of alignment. If any one of them are it will make it so your rings are not in the exact same plane. If they are messed up then when you tighten down your scope in the rings it will put undo pressure on your scope tube. Which is bad.

Most times it is the receiver of the gun that is not quite right, so you have to bed your base. The alignment bars will help you figure out what needs to be fixed. Lapping should only be done as a last resort if you cannot fix the alignment issue some other way. And only if it is a very small alignment issue.

Most of the good quality rings and bases are not the issue these days. It is possible, but not likely. If you have a problem it will most likely be the top your receiver is not square.

You are putting 4 different parts together hoping they will all line up perfectly. There is a good chance that 1 of them will have a problem. People who think otherwise have obviously never had the tools to measure this. They just assume that all this parts from different manufactures will fit together perfectly

none of that other stuff is really necessary.

as stated before, torque wrench is a perk, but not a necessity. </div></div>

Re: What a bonehead

Thanks for the comments, it was a simple 5 or 10 minute phone call, no big deal but I encourage everyone to do the same for new shooters. There's a lot of random info out there, some good and some not so good. You can read until your eyes bleed and still not know what to do, where a simple conversation clears it right up.

Glad I could help him out and I know in a couple years he'll do the same for the new newbie.

The deck of cards idea worked flawlessly. Everything went down just like you said it would. I am headed out at 0500 hours to site it in. Just too hot in LV to do so during the day! I was really surprised how easy it was after you explained everything. Can't thank you enough jasonk!

Re: What a bonehead

Wow, would you mind shrinking of removing that giant pic of your rifle. That is very annoying to have to scroll past over and over every time we come to your posts.

Once I figure that out, I will be sure to do that!
