Need some input here...

I found a great deal on a lefthanded 700 BDL in .30-06

Based on long action and bolt face choices what calibers could I rebarrel it for?

Will the bolt face work for a .257 Weatherby?

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

Not sure about the Weatherby, but my first thought is no. You can debarred to anything in the '06 family, i.e. 270, 6.5-06 etc. Or you can go with anything in the 308 family, 260, 243, 308. What are you going to use it for? That would help.

You can rebarrel to anything that uses a .480 boltface. The Weatherby uses a magnum .540 boltface.

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

30-06 is a .477 boltface,the 257 weatherby would require a magnum boltface.possible calibers are .243,.308,.270 .280 .280AI etc.

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

The bolt face for a 30-06 is .470 and for a .257 Weatherby it is .540. I don't know if a good rifle smith would want to open the bolt face that much, and there might be extractor issues as well.

You might look at some of the Ackley or improved calibers like .257, 6.5x55, 6.5x284 or .280. I have found 6.5x55 and .280 Ackley to be tremendous long range cartriges that give less pressure, use less powder, longer brass life and much longer barrel life than any of the magnums. Good luck.

open your reloading manual and look at the cartridge info page on the cartridge that peaks your interest. Any of them with a boltface around .470 would work.

I'd look hard at the 284 winchester

Really hard.

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

Thanks guys! I already have a .308 so I wanted to use this action and keep it a "longaction"

Primary use for this will be hunting but I will set it up for longrange shooting.

Good idea on lookin at cartridge base diameter for other options.

Can I but a magnum bolt for a 257 wby?

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

If you do not want to mess with the magazine and follower, I would shy away from the .308 family of cartridges as feeding issues could really arise. There will be a little extra space in the magazine which allows the cartridge to move under recoil.

For long range shooting, go with the high BC bullets such as 6.5 and 7mm. 6.5-06 and .280 would be my two choices.

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

Why not just keep it .30-'06? It'll kill anything on this continent and is a "good" long-range cartridge as well, especially if you roll your own.

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

I just had a 700BDL built in 25-06. Not the best caliber for target shooting but hell on White Tail and speed goats! I had mine set up with a 25", Shilen, 1 in 9 twist, Select Match, SS barrel. It's making bug holes at 100 yards with Nosler 115gr Ballistic Tip, and 110gr AccuBond bullets. So far 4831sc seems to be the ticket on both bullets. I have run it out to 500 yards with the 115gr bullets and it's a hammer.

You won't get near the velocity out of a 25-06 that you can in the .257 Weatherby, but you will spend a lot less on brass (if you re-load) and a hell of a lot less on ammo (if you don't re-load). I also suspect that if you shoot a lot you will be spending less on replacement barrels if you go the 25-06 route.

You will be limited on match type bullets in the .257, as only Sierra, JLK, and Burger make match bullets for the .257 cal. Not a lot of choices.

If I had not built a 25-06 I would have done a .280 Rem.

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

Super high performance 6.5's

6.5-06, 6.5-284, 6.5x55 and their respective AI versions

High performance 7's

284, 280, 7-06, 7x57 and the AI's

Or stick with a 30-06 and shoot heavy 30s through it.

The 6.5-06 with a long barrel and properly stoked with slow powder will get you to ~3100-3300fps with 140 Bergers (largely dependent upon barrel length).

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

I think I am going to go 280 AI with a Shilen barrel.

I want a good barrel contour & length for a 280AI?

What twist rate should I consider?

Contour? A good barrel from a reputable manufacturer should be accurate through allot of contours. What are you using it for? Hunting? Only 1-2 shots in a row? target? Competition? Any extreme temp ranges?

Length - 24-26" jump to my mind with 1:9 twist..

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

Why not a .284 win... It's powerful and accurate... Shines with long action and heavy bullets...

I decided tonstay with -06 mainly because I already have the brass, and the dies, bullets etc... Plus if something ever happens, there are more -06s than .284s out there... And .30-06 can get close to magnum numbers

I just bought a #5 fluted for the same purpose for a 284 WIN.

If you have not checked this out already here is a link to a post by Skyking where he has a video link about his #4 barrel 7WSM....

I have a 26" Bartlien #6 w/9 twist in 280AI. I use it for hunting and our local matches. The RIFLE is competitive as to accuracy and velocity, but the shooter is NOT in the matches. Hunting, well different story. Shoots 168 Bergers at 2960 and 140 Bergers at 3225, both sub moa. Drops pigs on their ass! DRT. It's going to WY in Oct. for elk. You won't be disappointed in a 280 Rem. or an AI version. I have an older -06 that is gonna get the same treatment as soon as the new bbl. arrives. Good luck w/ whatever choice you make.

+1 on what JCH said...you can choose from 120gr up to 180 VLDs and have great mv

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

You can turn your la into anything you want......almost. 223 to 338lapua and anything in between by changing the bolt face. 257wby can be totally done on your 30-06 bolt face with alittle turning time on a lathe and a sako extractor.

Re: What calibers can I rebarrel from a .30-06 700 BDL

I am moving toward a 6.5x55 using a Remington 700 action in 30-06. The Swede is only a few thousandts wider at the rim and my gunsmith said that it should work.. the 260 caliber is pretty nice.
