What can be expected from this barrel?

Hi guys, what do you think about this barrel?

It has 100 rounds thrugh it and it's been cleaned for the first time just before the photos.

Is this normal? Is that rust? Should I expect poor accuracy from it? Should I replace it?

Probably copper fouling. How did you clean it (type of brush and type of cleaning solvent)?

I'm usig hoppe's #9 benchrest and a nylon brush with a coated dewey rod.
I'm runing a couple of wet patches, wait 10 min, run the brush about 20 cycles, then wet patch followed by dry patches until one comes out completely dry.
After that, I ran a patch with oil because I'm not going to be using the rifle for some time.

Hoppe's #9 Benchrest is very mild. That's alot of copper. How was it shooting?

Hoppes #9 is a good powder solvent but it's not a good copper solvent.

Get a good copper solvent like KG-12.

What cartridge is the rifle? Something pretty high velocity?

I can only get Hoppes, Remington and Shooters Choice. And not the complete product line.. just some products.

That bore looks good to me from what I can see. There IS copper on the rifling. I find that if I leave #9 in my bore for a day, when I run another wet patch down the bore it comes out pretty green which I believe means it's cleaning the copper. However, I really don't worry about copper fouling at all. I just happened to leave my bore wet once and noticed that. Now I'll do it once in a while just for shits and giggles. Hell, I rarely clean the bore... Unless my accuracy has decreased.

...Oh, and the rifle I'm referring to is a .308.

I'm more worried by the strage looking crown than the inside of your barrel, but If it shoots then leave it bee.

If you are hellbent on getting rid of the copper. Then find some KG12...I haven't found anything to work better...period.

flyboy and I apparently had the same thought. The crown has a very sharp-practically 90 degree shoulder instead of a 12 or so degree chamfer. It isn't that the crown looks bad or damaged-but machined in a strange fashion.

IF the guns shoot well-all is good. More guns end up losing accuracy by careless and anal cleaning than by shooting IMO.A strong copper solvent like Sweet's 7.62 would leave a pile of BLUE patches dissolving the copper. If you are getting good groups I wouldn't worry about anything. Some tubes-especially factory barrels haven't been lapped and smoothed and as a result pick up alot of copper.

Finally I decided to clean it. I've never seen the steel of this barrel before... This is what I have now... what do you think? Does it look good?
I will test it tomorrow to see how it performs now and how fast it builds up copper and how many shots it takes to start opening the groups.

I had a savage 12 fv that looked like that but shot very good, even at 1k.

You may find it takes a few to several rounds for it to deposit enough copper to settle down
Hopefully that makes sense

Wow. I've never looked that close at a factory remington barrel.

That is just pathetic. I have valve covers for my big block chevy that are better machined than that. Then I watch the Lilja video. Very disappointed in Remington after seeing that.

Those barrels will suffer from copper fouling until they day they are shot out.

I recognised that barrel from the crown, had the very same rifle.

I gave mine a gentle lapping before I started shooting, the groups came out excellent in the end, back of the thumbnail stuff at 100m. I even shot the top of a little green soldier figurene (you know the kind!) which someone left at the range, just to prove it could be done

I had to shoot the barrel in first though, about 40 rounds with a lot of cleaning. It grouped much better with a little bit of copper on the bore to even it out.

I wouldn't lap a barrel myself once it's been fired a few times, I've heard some bad stories about that.

That is a pretty darn rough bore. The two "clean barrel" photos of the muzzle are pretty damning.

Which model, exactly was that?

You mention 700 "Police" but there are a few different models sold / marketed primarily to law enforcement. E.g. 700P, 700P LTR, etc.

These rifles are actually held to a 1 MOA standard at remington. Are you achieving that?

If you are getting like .950, I wouldnt be happy with that but according to Remington, that would be considered "in spec" for a production 700P or 700P LTR.

J-B Bore Brite used according to instructions will very lightly polish the bore and smooth it a little. I've personally used it on numerous bores and it's never harmed a single one.

For normal cleaning, J-B Bore Cleaning Compound will remove all fouling from a bore; powder residue and copper.

If you Google J-B bore products, you'll find lots of information on both cleaning compounds.

My barrel is sort of similar... the other day i shot around a .25MOA group at 370 yards

If it shoots like ass in the hands of a good shooter then you have reason to complain.

I don't remember the exact model.
About the groups, I still didn't try to shoot small groups. I was using this rifle to learn proper position and recoil management.
As soon as I can I will go to the range with the clean barrel to shoot for groups and see how it performs.
Today I bought another Remington and the barrel looks much much better.
