Rifle Scopes What cartridge would you use a 8-32x scope for?

Re: What cartridge would you use a 8-32x scope for?

This all depends on what type of shooting you will be doing and not so much what cartridge you have. I do a lot of 1000yd Matches with our targets being either 9" steel plates or paper with a shoot n see. At those distances with such small targets I use an 8-32x with my 6.5 Creedmoor. I have a 6-24x on my other gun and it works well too but it's great having more magnification. In a tactical type of match though, you wouldn't need such high magnification. 5-25x or 6-24x would be most versatile. The only problem with more magnification is mirage, I sometimes need to back down the magnification during a match so I get less mirage and better image quality. Hope this helps!

.22 short...single shot...would be my go-to rifle with an 8-32x scope!

All joking aside, you don't NEED 32x by any means for shooting 800yds in my opinion. It really all depends on what YOU want and what your plans are for shooting at the ranges you'll be shooting, and the conditions you'll be shooting in. (i.e. - I would want a lot lower magnification on the low-end if it was going on a hunting rifle, but if I were exclusively punching paper, I might settle on a scope with a high magnification on the top end). The other problem with a scope that gets up to 32x is that if you don't buy higher end (like Nightforce, etc.), you won't be pleased with the quality of the optics at the high end of the magnification range if you settle on something like a Bushnell or other more "budget-minded" scope. The other problem is that with any degree of mirage, 32x is going to be a real PITA.

If it were me, I'd be looking at something more in the 5-20x/5.5-22x range at the most.

Can you explain Mirage please. I guess I was hoping to buy a scope that I could use for long range matches and hunting. But I guess a 8-32 can only be used for one of those applications. I bought a NXS for a AR15 SPR with 8-32x for 1000 yard matches a few years ago. Then had to go to Virginia for school shortly after buying it, so its just sitting there waiting. It tempts me everytime I go home. sigh.

Basically what happens is mirage will actually make the target appear to be in a different position than it is. Therefore, you back down your magnification so you aren't multiplying the mirage and you will get a clearer image of your target and where it actually is, not where it appears to be. We usually shoot in the morning when the mirage isn't bad but I usually end up shooting about half a mil lower from the time I start a match till the time it ends because of how hot it gets during that time, meaning that I hold my cross hair lower, not actually adjust for it. I love my 32x scope and it is only a Nikon but I have great clarity at 32x power and it tracks well and holds a perfect zero. It's good enough to place me top 3 in most of the matches I shoot.

Unless your shooting PD's out west, an 8-32x scope is a very poor choice for hunting.

In all actuality, for medium to large sized game a 2-7x scope is absolutely adequate for hunting any where in the country.

Most people head to the fields seriously overscoped.

There are only a few shooting disciplines that make use of an 8-32x scope.

I would consider selling the 8-32 and instead opt for the 3.5-15x. A much more versatile scope. Very usable for hunting and also match shooting well beyond 1000 yards.
You may be able to find someone willing taht is getting into f-class or some other discipline to do a straight trade with you.

Re: What cartridge would you use a 8-32x scope for?

I use Swarovski glass on all of my long range sticks. As long as you are using a quality scope, the ability to dial up high magnification is just another tool in your tool box. I varmint and hunt larger game quite alot with my scope typically set at 12x. At times you may want to zoom in a bit. Having that ability is an asset.

For my lesser powered rifles that dont go the distance, I use lower magnification scopes. I use Leupold Mark IV fixed 10x on my AR platform varminters which have become dedicated coyote guns.

Hope this helps.

I have a Nightforce 8x32 and it's a fine scope. It spends most of it's time on my 22 long rifle for target shooting. Right now it's on my new 308 while I'm working up my handloads.

Which scope do you have?
