Well what do you think about this build I have planned??

Specs:
1 Model 1 sales 18" Spr barrel (1X7)
1 BCM mil-spec upper
1 Magpul PRS stock
1 PRI Carbon Fiber forearm and PRI Full Length Top Rail
1 Magpul MIAD Grip
1 LaRue LT-123
1 Millet LRS 6X25X56 (milrad/milrad)
1 AAC Black Out Flash Hider

So if there is anything I could ad feel free to say something. And any pictures of 18" SPRS would be great.

Thanks

Scott

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

scrap anything made by model 1 sales(look at White Oak Armament barrels), the LRS-1 is overkill for a AR, and IMHO so is the PRS stock (look at the UBR)

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

You definitely want to ditch the M1S barrel in favor of the much better WOA SPR barrel with a rifle-length gas system and M4 feedramp barrel extension. They are first rate barrels and WOA is known for their quality. I'd also drop the Bravo Co upper in favor of a WOA mil-spec upper (you can get one complete from WOA for around $110 with M4 feedramps).

As for the rest...it is really a matter of personal preference. I like the PRS, but it is big, heavy, and a little bulky on a shorter barrel setup like the 18" SPR barrel you are considering. The UBR is a great option. I also really like the VLTOR E-MOD stocks which I consider to be one of the finest collapsible stocks available.

As for the scope/mounts...definitely go for the Larue mount, but the scope is up to you. Many will tell you that a 6-25x56 scope on an 18" barreled AR is overkill (I tend to agree), but it really is up to you. I'd probably step down to a smaller scope (dimensionally and in terms of magnification).

Good luck!

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

Get a better barrel and better optic. If im not mistaken those are ER Shaw barrels, spend the money and get somthing decent if you want it to shoot.

WOA would be my first choice. ADCO has them in stock.

You dont want to go cheap on the most important things on the build do you?

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

As for optics, I'm running a 3-9x Accupoint on my SPR-style AR, and I think it's very well suited to the kind of shooting people are likely to do with a rifle like that.

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

After I pulled my head out of my ass i figured out the I need 35 MM rings. So who makes a good pair 35 mm rings?

Thanks,
Scott

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

Are you really set on that optic? It's really pretty poorly suited to the kind of shooting ARs are usually used for.

Oh, and since you asked for pics of 18" SPR style rifles:

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

Okay...while it really is up to you...I PROMISE YOU that you don't want a 35mm tubed, 6-25x56, 17" long, 2.1 lb scope on top of an AR-15 SPR build. It is huge for starters, it is too much power for a 600yd .223 rifle, and it weighs a lot for an SPR build. It will screw with the balance of the rifle, with a 6x minimum magnification, it will be less useful for closer range engagement of targets, and it is just generally not well-suited to mounting on an AR-15.

The original SPR rifles were equipped with 3.5-10x, 2.5-9x and 3-9x scopes. Scopes in those ranges are extremely well equipped for engaging targets with the SPR out to 600yds or further, but also work well in shorter range settings. I have seen SPR's setup with 4-14x optics, and that is probably as large as I would go. There are a ton of options out there that are vastly better suited to your rifle than the LRS you are currently considering.

Do yourself a favor and ditch the Millet for a better, smaller, lower powered option.

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

The only reason I'm getting the Millett now is cause I plan on building a copy of this upper I'm planing to build in 6.5 Grendal. But something like yall would recommend for optics wouldn't be bad. but i really plan on going out to maybe 7-800 yards. So parallax knob is a must, and another reason why I like it is the 56 MM OBJ. I plan on hunting yotes a lil with it so i like the extra light a 56 mm grabs. but still keep the opions coming. And maybe a Badger Ordnance Forearm.

Got the BCM upper already. Its a paper weight right now.

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

Just because it has a huge obj lens doesn't mean it gathers more light, you are still limited in your light gathering capability by the size of your erector tube and the optic design. I had a BuckGold 4-16x 56mm SF MilDot and that thing was HUGE and HEAVY!! I have since upgraded to a Leupy LR hunter and before I got rid of the millet I did a light comparison test (hold up paper to the obj lens and trace it. I was very very suprised that the millet had a smaller circle even though it had a huge obj lens. If you are set on that optic then good on ya, but take the advice of all the people here saying to find something better. You don't need the paralax adj if you dont go over 12x IIRC.
Don't kid yourself with going out to 7-800yds and hunting yotes, the .223 is not really well suited for that.
As said before the rest of your build looks top notch, why skimp on the most important part of your build (barrel).

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

The BO forearms are really heavy, just FYI.

I have one and hate the weight, and it's on a dedicated target rifle, not something I have to pack far.

Also, as stated, the PRS is really heavy, also. Your build will be a 13+ lb gun.

For a hunting rifle, anything over 10-11 lbs, IMO, is too much, and lighter is always better.

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

I have that Millet scope on my .300 wby and put it on my AR for for fun and it is absurd looking. The scope is almost bigger than the rifle. Go with a smaller scope. I am still not sure if I'm a fan of the millet or not, but I know since I bought it I have found a lot of scopes in that price range that would be great for a long range AR build (I am building one now). If you are 100% sure about the millet. It comes with rings and they are very high so they are actually ok for an Ar because they give you clearance off the charging handle, but if you want better rings TPS makes a 35mm ring that is really good. about $100 at SWFA. That's what I got for my 300 because the millet rings are so High. A good choice for your AR build in the price range of a millet is an SWFA super sniper. Although you will hear good and bad about any scope on this sight that isn't $2000 or more the SWFA scopes seem to be pretty popular. I haven't bought one yet but am planning on it when I finish my build.

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

Just my 2 cents. Stay away from the Model 1 anything. Go with the Grendel...you will be very happy as long as you reload or have access to a lot of factory ammo. I have a 20" SPR type rifle and its a little on the heavy side with bi-pod, brake, PRS stock, and MK4 scope. Hope this helps in your build. -Jason

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

So thanks for the input everyone. I'm going to go with the WOA Barrel and maybe a 4.5X14 power optic of some sort. I have to have a minimum of 10 power, so anyone know any other good low coast scopes??, that USO is a little pricy and I cant bring myself to get one. And how sturdy are the UBRS? i looked at one here at a local store and well it just looked flimsy when it was out all the way so I could get a good prone pos. it just felt flimsy.

Thanks for the help,

scott

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

I've got a Millet LRS-1 on my Suppressed DPMS .308 because w/the sunshade on it, it matches the size of the DPMS when suppressor is attached.

That being said, dont be too quick to dog M1S.com stuff, I've got a stainless .223chamber 8twist 20" bbl that shoots .5moa with golden bear lacquered steel 62grn JHP.

People dont believe it, but members of this board have shot it and witnessed it.

here's a pic.
SS 16 rear focus, DPMS CF foreend, and miculek comp. RRA NM trigger and JP springs.

Re: What do you think about this build i got planned.

Scott...don't know if you've decided on the optic yet but I'm also got an 18" build going on at the moment (Pete at Roedale is doing the honours on this one). I'm going to be using the rifle for paper punching out to 600yds.

I didn't want a long and heavy scope on this rifle, didn't seem/feel right for what I was trying to achieve - i.e a light/portable/wieldy carbine.

So I went with an NF 2.5-10x24 (guess it'd have to be the x32 now?) as it was light, compact and had up to 10x mag. The SN3 was also high on the list but was heavier than I wanted and also not readily available in the UK.

Alex at Euro Optics did a good price on the NF and delivery was ex-stock/immediate.

As USMCj says...have a look at the Magpul UBR - I'm a great fan of this stock! I don't think the PRS gives you enough flexibility in LOP adjustment for different positions or clothing. Also I've read it interferes with the rear charging handle.

On the Flash Hider, I have the Blackout on another upper.....it rings like a bell when shooting or cycling the bolt (I remember seeing some other posts on the Hide about this somwewhere). It doesn't worry me too much but I can see how some might find it annoying!

Also +1 with Humungus on the Geisselle.

Maybe my choices are influenced by the PITA process we have to go through to get authorisation to buy rifles here in the UK but I've tried to go for the best options I could (not cheap but firm believer in "buy once, cry once" - especially as it's really hard to change the basics here!).

Good luck with the build!
