One article I read, blamed the Crain operators (union) for dragging their feet on unloading the containers. I'll have to try to find it.
Somebody, somewhere has decided to put a squeeze on consumer goods. Personally, I lean towards tin foil hat explanations for everything. I think it is all going as planned to drive a stake through the heart of small, privately owned businesses. Once they are gone, Amazon and the like can control to market. This is also designed to get consumers used to empty shelves and higher prices. That will never go back to normal. Another step towards full governmental control of everything.

If you limit the trucks that are legal to drive into the ports to only 25% of the trucks on the road, you are limiting available trucks. Period.
If you exclude every owner/operator in the trucking industry from coming into the port - you are deciding that only 30% of that 25% are allowed to come into the port..... thus limiting it some more. Now you are down to 7.5% of the trucks are allowed.
Then you limit the drivers that are allowed to drive into the ports to ONLY UNION DRIVERS - then you've decided that only 5% of the available 30% of the original 25% can go there. Now you are down to .3% of the trucks are allowed.
Then you take into consideration that these .3% of the trucks on the road are hauling stuff all over the country, and will probably have to dead-head back to the port for another load, which means that you might get 5% of those trucks back to the port at any given time? Now you're talking about 1 truck out of a 1,000 trucks is going to get to the port for a load.

there's a lot of trucks that can't pull into CA because of pollution control on their trucks from what i understand. CA will fine them, so rather than update their trucks, they stay out of CA. Did see a podcast last nite that had the fella at the port saying trucks didn't show up to haul off the containers unloaded during the second shift, so they couldn't unload the 3rd shift . Who knows WTH going on
Don't forget most truckdrivers don't want to go into California to begin with . Besides the commy assholes that reside there , the high price for fuel , and it's 55 mph STATEWIDE for trucks .

Yes. Many truckers hate the new diesels with DEF fluid. Those systems can at times be finicky and extremely expensive to repair. Many remove them from trucks and avoid states like California with heavy restrictions. I have heard rumblings of this for the last few years. It’s kind of odd is that oil spill off the California coast line was caused by an oil pipeline that got caught up in the ships anchor.This may be the reason. But its not just that.
My theory is, The Rona freak out messed with global supply and demand. The shipping backlog has been an issue since the rona shut down as ports slowed, people layed off, idiotic new restrictions from the rona. Especially in commieforina. Now demand is up and production is trying to play catch up. Factorys in Asia reopened and they are trying to catch up too.
The survey found that Average Class 8 age differs significantly between small, medium and large fleets. Small fleets averaged a Class 8 truck age of 5 years while large fleets reported an average of 2.7 years.
That info was from a 5 year old survey. Not sure how that meshes with current CA Class 8 restrictions.

To describe the situation, let us look at port truckers in California. (at the date of this article's writing) There are (were) around 13,000 truckers regularly serving the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. However, only a few hundred are classified as employees.The others are owner-operators who traditionally:
- lease their rigs from trucking companies,
- drive under those companies’ permits, and
- rely on them for work assignments.
While this is a popular business model, there are some who abuse this relationship. For example, to meet the state’s strict clean-air regulations, trucking companies (the Socialist Republic of Caliporinia) forced drivers to purchase new trucks beginning in 2008 rather than assume the expense. Many drivers, who also pay for diesel fuel, repairs, and insurance, fell into debt as they worked overtime to pay off huge loans for their trucks. The new AB5 law would basically require carriers to hire the independent contractors and pay them health insurance and other employee benefits.
It is not just California carriers that must deal with the law’s ABC test B prong, which requires carriers and contractors to be in essentially separate areas of business. Carriers across the state’s border that deliver inside California will be required to meet this B prong as well.
Today, the carriers that have been taking the “wait and see” approach on the law and the court’s process are now facing a near-term reality that the independent contractor system might not be possible and will have to face an increase in costs to hire the drivers.
Other carriers have been cutting ties with California as the cost of doing business in the state are greater than the reward and pull out of any California operations to shield themselves from the impact of the AB5 law.
So the truth is the state of California decided they would completely change the business model of the trucking industry - and thus took the available trucking fleet that serviced the ports from 13,000 to just a few hundred. On purpose. Without any thoughts of unintended consequences.

If a trucker was found to have removed the DEF/Emissions system from their truck ANYWHERE in the USA they would be yanked off the road.
It simply doesnt happen.
DEF/Emissions on modern diesels arent the boogyman some people make them out to be. On diesels that are WORKED they are generally fine. I wont disagree that on diesels that spend a lot of time at idle they can cause issues. This is a reason A TON of trucks now have APU's to run A/C and electrics and shut off the main engine.
But to say "truckers remove that shit and then just avoid california" is 100% false and "fake news" at its finest.

He has walked off jobs and left his rig at terminals instead of going there and still works plenty.

Kalifornia is a commie state. You have a couple of things in play here. Emissions as mentioned above...you also have Vax passports to deal with too. Lots of truckers out there will not take it. For good reason. They are requiring it. All planned by Greasy Gavin, Piglosi and the rest of the commies in the gov.
I have enough experience to know that engines with DEF/DPF that are WORKED and the DPF is allowed to get and stay hot(outside of regen) seem to have few issues. Engines that are idled a lot, driven only in town, etc... i.e. not worked hard enough to get and keep the DPF hot definitely have issues.
Im not saying they have no issues, but the constant "DPF and DEF suck, are garbage, people remove that shit constantly, etc" gets old when its FAR from the truth.
How long have those systems been out on all kinds of vehicles? 20 years?
I would say its few and far between that OTR truckers are actually removing and running without those systems in place.

It's not complete horseshit. There are a lot of people that delete trucks and avoid California because they are more likely to check your truck. You are correct that it's not a complicated system if you understand how it works but some trucks can be very finicky. They aren't exactly cheap to keep up with when they have issues which is why people do away with it. I think it's fucking stupid because most dealers will not touch one that has been deleted either.
Ask the people that have been waiting months for a def level/quality sensor how they feel about it since it parked a shitload of trucks. It is bad enough that the manufacturer came out with a software revision to bypass that part of the system to get people on the road again. Yet, people wonder why others are doing away with the system.
You can also go look on truck forums and other places to see that people are asking for contact information to have their trucks deleted and tuned almost daily. People do it with equipment as well but not as frequently. There are a few sites to purchase the tunes if you have oem software such as insite to do the delete yourself if you have dealer level software which bootleg versions are available very cheap.

She handled 500 containers a week in and out of West Coast ports for years. She hated Long Beach most of all.

I work in global forwarding. I can assure you it’s not a single factor. More freight than ever entering LA/LB and more unloading vs moving east on trains. This is in part bc ocean carriers raised rates for their containers moving intact inland.
There are also not enough chassis to go around and when they are short then the container yards get stacked and overflow. This causes congestion.
finally, there is and has been a driver shortage for years. So opening the port 24-7 doesn’t necessarily help if you don’t have enough labor to go in and out. Ports aren’t usually open 24-7 because they actually have to clean up and organize after a couple of shifts. Work 16 hours and your yard is a mess and needs to be reorganized and that takes time.
wish I could say Joe B caused it. But honestly he didn’t and he can’t help it either. We buy too much Asian manufactured goods and we cause the problem. Buy from the US or just hang tight and help if you want by not filling your house with plastic crap.

im sure he did. Ron loves a talking point. Florida is geographically inconvenient. Florida ports bring in freight from S. America but you don’t pull Asian freight to Florida so you can push it back to Minnesota or Illinois. Fastest and most convenient way to import is straight across the pacific into Seattle or LA and then inland via rail. Truck is secondary and more costly now.

We know a driver who lived in Tucson and avoided going home for as long as possible because as soon as she went there they would send her to CA. She fixed that problem by moving to Missouri.
