What is Trace???

I see a number of posts referring to watching a the trace ofa bullet?

Is this the same as what we Brits term as "swirl" ie the "vortex" of spinning air that can be seen if you are standing directly behind the bullet path?

i'm a product of my environment and went to publik sckool....and sometimes use spell Czech.....
