What scope is most appropriate for AR15 ?

Do you personally have the 1-8 with the FC-DMx reticle?
i have been very curious about how that reticle performs at 1x and what it looks like through the scope.
Unfortunately no. But it's coming soon. But based on the specs of the reticle the only big question is how bright is it in daylight at 1X. Everything else looks real solid. I have high expectations for the DMx version.

My basic viewpoint on optics, is that if you can see it, and adjust to the next one, you should be able to hit both.
This is not simply about the hardware (eyes count in a big way, too). Nor has it any mention of price tags.
When a shooter asks me along to help pick out scope; we take them out of the display case, and use them for the shooter to resolve objects clear across the store, the bigger the store, the better. If the store won't let you do this; find another store.
We start with the high dollar scopes, to show what 'good' actually looks like to the shooter, then mid-range cost, then lower shelf stuff. We discuss what we're seeing and whether the shooter feels comfortable with spending less money.
We also consider that a replaced scope can become a hand-me-down for a 'lesser' rifle, or as a 'hot spare' to save your day on range if the big buck scope goes Oops.
I actually carry a couple of used spares with me to matches to lend out in case of somebody else's emergency, and depending on the situation, I may just gift it to them. No cost to me, It was bought and paid for, and used/proven, long ago.
There is no better friend than a friend in need. If shooting isn't about friendship, it tends to die out from loneliness right quick.

I feel the idea that it's "just a 223" kinda misses the point. I wouldn't stand rudely in front of one, not even at 600yd, where I have shot an AR in National Level MR F T/R competition. It's equal to its intended tasks, both varminting and military. I suspect that after the 22LR, more 223 is shot in this country than any other chambering. I am an unabashed fan of the 223.

This is the correct balance in life if you don’t have a lot of money.
Better to have optics that won’t break vs several that do, unless you’re just plinking 1-2x year (most people).

Are you using it as a 'precision rifle' where you are only shooting it prone and/or off a tripod/bipod?
Can go with a lighter version of optic that can go up to 12x or 14x.
Do you want to be able to use it as a carbine as well?

For an 18” I would suggest either an acog/prism or a lighter weight low variable but consider things like the 3-9 (ss hd etc) too as I find them relatively easy to do both eyes open at 3x. Lpvo 1-6/8 just make sure the eye box is forgiving. If you don’t have a red dot ar though that generally is my preference; I just tend to do that on shorter barrels.
Nikon is out of the rifle scope business last I checked.
We are reaching the stage where dual-use/multi-use scopes are becoming/have become a thing for the AR-15. In fact, many of the dual-use scopes exceed the performance capabilities of 5.56 chambered AR-15s, and you can spoil yourself on at least a dozen older high performance LPVOs for 16” and shorter AR-15s and probably never feel out-glassed.
Agreed, it always used to be that if you tried to build a "do all gun" that you would just wind up with something that sucks at everything and thats still true to an extent but in regards to 5.56 you can absolutely build a rifle that is equally capable from 5 yards to 600+ and still be accurate and lethal with the new bullets/optics available.
My razor G3 1-10x routinely gets stretched out to 600 and I never feel like its the wrong tool for the job... and its even better on 1x
3-15 or 3-18 would be my pick if I had an 18 inch of weights not a concern a gen 2 razor 3.6-18 can be bought on here for pretty reasonable money.
The 2-20 nx8 is a good option with you being 80 and running an 18 inch barrel I doubt you’ll be needing 1x so I wouldn’t base it all around that
look for a 3-15 nxs f1 or f2 if that suits your fancy. Might be better for a groundhog unit.
Already been mentioned a bunch but I think the 3-18 is about perfect. AR's these days are so stinking accurate no reason not to have some higher zoom zoom for longer range shots.

It’s all about your intended use and secondarily, your budget.
I just mounted a new scope on my old 5.56 last night. Seems nice. I will sight it this afternoon. NIGHTFORCE 1-8 ATACR. DMX reticule.
Lower is with 2.5-10x24
