What Serial Number to get on Remington 700

If you were to try and purchase a Remington 700 rifle that was made before they had the quality issues, what would be the last serial number letter that would be good?

If my plan was to buy a rifle and take it to a custom shop and just use the receiver, bolt, and trigger. Is there any worry about the new rifles? I think I saw that some of the new ones have bolt failures?

Yes if you check out bolt cracking, there are a number of them out there that the bolt where it get's pressure on the receiver cracks.

Sounds like hot ammo causing that which isn't the fault of the rifle, and I've never seen anyone post pictures about that here.

Wow, maybe I lucked out. I have a Rem 5R Gen 2 SS in .308 and it shoots pretty dang good (looks like I got a decent barrel) particularly after skim bedding and changing to a Jewel trigger.

Though I do think that the trigger is the last thing I would want to retain....but I may well be insufficiently informed.

like others have said, i would build on a custom action. you can get some really good ones for 800-900. you will have more than that to make a r700 "right"

but if you insist on a rem, why not look at just buying a "blue printed" action from PTG?

Small world. I was just looking at those after ordering some Go / No Go gauges. The price is close to my Origin and I would probably buy an Origin but the OP has a yearning for the 700

IDK I think 5r's have a reputation for being accurate just about every one I see is averaging 0.4-0.75 MOA but I'm sure we can find user reports of poor accuracy on any factory rifle.

A lot of Smiths use them that's their prerogative, but I stick with what works BEST for Tac Ops. I have had long talks with George over this issue and we have seen eye to eye on several factors GAP Loves the Bartlein 5R and Tac Ops loves the 4 Groove Krieger. Both companies make fantastic barrels and you couldn't go wrong with either of them. Frank Green is a Class act and Sandy Krieger and the crew over there are outstanding people. But for my work 4 groove 24/7 Johnny...

Brazed onto the bolt by what looked like raccoons on crack.

Yes they do still fall off, unlike the bolt handles on Rugers, Winchesters, Brownings, Tikkas, Howas, Sakos, and any premium action from the small makers.

Good to know that at 0.450 on the last 4x5 I shot my AX it's within the 0.4-0.75 range of what you consider "the bare minimum expectations". Here's a 5r meeting the same "bare minimum expectations" and I wouldn't shoot against the guy for pinks.

Soon someone will be in to clarify how the average 5r isn't as accurate as the average AI on a line of commenting that originated discusing how one user suggested the rifle "couldn't hit shit". And If I didn't know any better I'd say I ruffled a tikka owners feathers somewhere along the way. Lol.
