When using Nightforce or any other scope base with a recoil shoulder built in or if pinning the base, there's absolutely no advantage to opening the scope base holes to 8/40 unless there's an alignment issue or the base dictates it. If you shear the screws off a scope base that’s also being held in place by a recoil shoulder, you have other major problems.

That being said, myself and others have incorporated 8/40 scope base screws into our signature receivers along with double pinning them in place. Sometimes the things we do or have done to our rifles is to give us that certain level of comfort. If opening the base holes to 8/40 gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling I say go for it.

Pinning the scope base with two dowel or roll pins keeps it from having any side to side deflection. The pins go through the base and into the receiver. When coupled with 8/40 screws the shear factor is through the roof. One of the changes I made to my receiver was to have the pin holes be blind holes in the bottom of the scope base.

Bases that are just screwed on can and do move, no matter who the manufacturer is. If bumped from the side it becomes an issue and the zero is compromised.

What about the Ken Farrell G-Force scope base? Have you had any experience with them? If you need me to elaborate, shoot me a PM.

Thanks

I just bought a SPS-V in .308, still in my Calif. 10 day waiting period. How can you tell if the reciever is 8-40 or 48?

Re: what size base screws are on a 700

Another question, I'm needing some base screws (6 48s) that striped out when I took the base off the action. Now I have no screws. Any sources you guys use? Would kinda like some that aren't Aluminum.

Thanks
