What small primer to use with Lapua Brass?

I use CCI BR4’s. There is a strong rumor that BR4’s aren’t any better than 400’s or 450’s, which could very well be true. But, at $10.00 per thousand difference, spread out over 1,000 primers, I don’t care.
There really aren’t ”bad” combinations of primers and Lapua brass. Just use good quality primers like CCI or Federal.

Do I have to swap out the firing pin? Thought I read someone having to do that but don’t understand why.
I don’t know if I got a bad Lot of BR4’s but 2-3 primers out of every 100 count packet from my 1,000 primer brick were duds. So getting the Fed 205m’s that I’ve never had an ignition failure with is a no brainer for me, especially when they are $20 cheaper per 1,000 at my LGS.

For Lapua brass you have to get a smaller diameter DECAPPING PIN for your reloading dies.
Your firing pin is fine.

Also, moving from Hornady brass. I’ve read case volume decreased going to Lapua. Is this a significant decrease? Back the charge off .5gr? 1gr? Then work up.

For a decapping die, I bought the Lee die from Amazon (LEE PRECISION Decapping Die). Currently sales for $12. Before using it on small primers, I removed the pin and put it in a hand drill. I used sand paper and turned it until it was small enough to work on small primers. I can now use it for both small and large primers. Be cautious not to sharpen it. You want it blunt enough to knock out, and not puncture.
When people said you had to swap the firing pin they werent talking about the decaping pin (though there is that too for the smaller .059 european flash hole), they were talking about the difference between a large .075 firing pin and a small .062 firing pin. The larger firing pin spans too great of a gap for the high pressure small primers, the smaller firing pin provides a smaller gap that the small primer can stand without cratering to hell.

I am using Federal small primer and just recently scored some federal match primers. I have a savage 12 action and at first using CCI I was having a hard time setting it off. The thicker cup on the CCI was not working for my setup. On larger primer it wasnt an issue but small no. SO far the the federal is the only stuff that will work with my setup.
