What to use instead of torque wrench?

Re: What to use instead of torque wrench?

For ring cross screws and action screws I do hand tight plus 1/4 turn. For ring cap screws I just tighten an much as I comortably can holding the short end of the wrench between my thumb and finger.

PaleHorse,

I bet if the truth were known, compared to what type equipment the average REAL shooter has here on the hide, mine would fall under "crap not worth having."

But alas, with my pile of crap shootin plunder I have shot two cleans, or that is perfect scores with my gear @ 1000 yds during last years shooting season. I'm glad my wallet never heard nor took advice from the likes of you. If a man is frugal and works hard, he can dazzle those with ridiculously expensive gear.

You stay on the couch and play video games, I'm going to go shoot, if I got the gas $ to get to the range.....

Re: What to use instead of torque wrench?

Speaking as a dumb-assed cop (with a Masters Degree), there is a reason we do silly things like check torques every time with a quality tool. That's because our equipment, our data books, our tools, and our records are subpoenable.

If we have to take a shot on a callout, every piece of gear and every note and every cold bore target and every round of ammo is subject to close scrutiny and post-event examination by attorneys and "expert" witnesses who have all the time in the world to pick apart our work.

M/O work is, in some ways, the domain of the OCD professional ;-) Do it the same every time and keep perfect records. Because the paper trail will keep you out of jail, (where you could end up for doing the right thing.) Is that right??? Well, it's reality.

Anyway, let me also echo several folks' sentiment for giving some encouragement to a fellow-Vermonter who is enthusiastic and could turn into a top long range shooter some day.

Cheers,

Sirhr

all fasteners, all grades and all sizes. with this method, it doesn't matter what grade the fastener is. you know for sure if you have torqued it past the yield point.

Personally, I like to tighten the screw until it breaks. Then back it off 1/4 turn. I find this much more precise than trying to guess at what point the screw will break. When you hear the snap, you know for sure the exact breaking point. Then just loosen it a little. This is the best method I've found besides using a torque wrench.
