What type of rifles do you like in here?

I've got an ongoing Mosin project with one of those machine gun barrels that were available years ago and I just bought a Timney trigger. For a stock I have a Finn M28-76.

It was never a sniper and it won't try to look like anything else but I expect it to have some legs.

Is this the right forum to post about it?

If there was a sticky in here I would have read it but I've only got the title to go by.

I think your topic fits here as well or better then any other forum on this site, but I'm not the owner or mod.

Anyway, I would be interested to see how the MG barrel shoots.

Years ago when I started in high power Model 70s or Garands/M1903s were the go to rifles, the Service Teams are the only ones who had M14s. To give you an idea about the M1A's, they were just popping up. I bought mine in 1977 with a 4 Digit Serial number 0068XX.

A couple guys bought M1919A4 barrels and cut down, profiled and chambered to fit Model 70 actions. These barrels shot like the house was on fire. Accurate and had an exceptional round count.

I've thought about doing the same thing if I could find another Model 70 Action.

My dream would be to find some sort of a 6.5 machine gun barrel, chamber it to 6.5 CM and put it on a Model 70 Action.

Many years ago I ran across a guy who traveled the Intuit villages on the west coast of Alaska buying up their rusted rifles. I was able to buy 6 Model 70 Actions for $235 for the lot. I'd sure like to run across a deal like that again.

My machine gun barrel is chrome lined like most others so I'm not sure if you'll find a 6.5 that you can re-chamber.

From the few examples I've read about, the barrel might shoot sub MOA.

The story goes that there was some import of eastern block machine gun parts kits without barrels and a bunch of new chrome lined barrels were made to go with the kits and then something happened with the kits, somebody wound up sitting on a lot of barrels and then they figured out that with a little machining they could fit on a Mosin. Eventually they were selling pretty cheap and I picked one up.

They don't fit in a standard Mosin stock very well and not too many people will go to the lengths of rebarreling a Mosin so I think most of them are waiting.

I've got an American Mosin that Bannerman butchered so it needs a new barrel. The stock I got from a lefty after he found a lefty M28-76 stock. The Timney trigger was something I have wanted for a while, I think it might have been the genesis of the project, I don't think I wanted to try to build an accurate Mosin until there was a better trigger.

Now that I have almost everything, I should get it together.

All that I have to figure out is iron sights or optics.

If it goes bang and makes little, tiny holes a long, long way away... it's my favorite!

Pictures when you are done. Nothing wrong with hotrodding a Moisin. Everything wrong with slapping a fiberglass stock on it and a POS eBay scope on it and calling it a Sniper Rifle... But it sounds like you are doing something far more technical. And interesting. And worthy of photos!

Cheers,

It's not terribly technical, just trying to bring together some interesting pieces to hopefully make a rifle with some legs.

A M28-76 has a nice set of target irons but I don't have a set. I could try to make a similar set from some unrelated globe sight.

On the other hand, I've never shot more than 100 yards with irons.

I could try to be somewhat "correct" and bolt a Mosin sniper scope mount on the side but that would not give me too many good scope options and I have to cut the stock.

I could be incorrect and bolt/rivet an AK scope mount on the side which opens up the options but still needs a cut in the stock.

I could try one of the scout scope things but that seems weird and I don't think my barrel takes a rear sight base anyway.

It's a tough decision because my head says AK but my heart says don't cut the stock.

One other thing, the M28-76 had a unique bolt handle made to ride under the rear sight. A standard bolt just looks weird. I'll have to make up a bolt for it too.
