I was a member of nice shooting range. The club has been established over 50 years and has very nice buildings and ranges. At the recent annual membership meeting it was announced all new applications/renewals would require a SSN to allow for a background check.

A private club requiring a ssn for back ground check?

What would you think?

Re: What would you think?

Its a private club I think they should do as they wish. I might prefer to know they look into who the person is next to me. I am open to thoughts about why that might be bad but I think I lean towards the idea myself. PG

Are they're asking for your SSN for a credit check or a criminal background. Either way it's totally out of line but if it's for a criminal check ask them why the hell they suddenly think they're law enforcement. Either way: Fuck that. I'd give them a fake one and if they came back questioning me, I'd quit.

Re: What would you think?

The purpose of the SSN is for background check. It is also the opening of Pandora's box. The board of directors have no appropriate response when asked what if a member experiences identity theft or how the information will be protected.

That's just crazy, they'll change their tune when their membership numbers see a giant decline. I would never give them my SSN there's no legitimate reason why they would need it.

Id think Simo might wonder about your screen name.

Re: What would you think?

No freaking way would I continue to be a patron of a place like that if my SSN was REQUIRED to continue to shoot there. With all the identity theft going on, you would think they would have a clue as to why people are more cautious about just handing over their SSN to anyone.

Re: What would you think?

I'll be there in May for the Ms Gun Owners meet and greet. I have heard great things about this club, but several new negatives lately. I'll be damned if I'd give it to them. Hell ask the board members for theirs in exchange!
