Re: Whats a clean powder for 45 and 9?
Chalk another one up for Titegroup.
I love it. It is very clean in everything I've tried it in, which includes 45acp, 10mm, 38spl and even 500 SW mag.
It is very clean, and only leaves a black smudge on one spot of the case, by the casemouth. It meters great, is cheap, and will load nearly any pistol. It is designed to be tolerant of its position in the case. I have tested that with the chrono, with my Smith 500, by checking velocity after tipping the pistol forward/down, and then checking velocity after tipping back/up. 17.5gr is a max load in the Smith, meanwhile the case could potentially hold over 50gr, so it is a good test of the effect of powder position. I found no difference in velocity.
That brings up the only 2 negatives (as far as I'm concerned) with Titegroup:
1. VERY LOW charge density. In nearly every application, you can fit WAY WAY WAY too much of this powder in the case. If you are squeamish about double charges (as we all should be), and are afraid of a powder that doesn't take up much room, TG isn't your powder.
2. It does not achieve top velocity in many cartridges. While it will work for nearly any pistol caliber (I can't think of one it won't work in), it usually ends up being low-performance. Case in point: The SW 500 mag. With 42gr H110, you can hit 1900+fps with a 350gr bullet. With 17.5gr TG, it goes about 1300. Almost 500 Special, honestly. However, TG achieves great velocity in 45acp.
Another clean powder for 45 is IMR 700x, which is very simlar to TG.
