I'm a C&R guy, and I've always loved shooting these guns, esp for the price. Problem is I come from a BR background, and just now starting LR hunting, except for groundhogs and my furthest is 411yds 6mm custom Rem, with Hart HV at 27". But my son (10yo) wanted a mosin so he saved up his money, and he loves shooting, but even his 22 has a scope, and he can shoot very good with it. He wants a scope, and I've saw so many ways to mt one, and I don't really wanna convert the bolt handle, so what's my options?

Well, to leave it pure and with the ability to reconvert it to "as is" condition you'd need to look for a scout scope mount and a scout scope, what you pretty much are doing is removing the rear leaf sight and mounting a rail in it's place.

Long eye relief scope will go on the mount. Then if you want to put it back to military issue all you do is put it back together. Nice thing about this setup is it keeps it rather low to the barrel so you still get a nice cheek weld, bad thing is, scout scopes are somewhat lacking in the magnification department, at least when I researched a similar project awhile back they were, don't know about now.

That's probably the only way you'd get around not having to modify the bolt handle. I've seen custom mounts that put the scope extremely high to clear, but I've got a 91/30 sniper with PU Scope and my biggest obstacle is cheek weld and proper holding due to the lack of parralax, I can't even imagine the issues a higher scope would bring without a modification to the buttstock and a rising comb of some sort.

Something like this:

But I don't know the quality or reputation of that web page, so that's more of just a general idea type of thing.

I don't suggest the ATI scope mount method simply because of the way they have you do the bolt.

Even on a good day I've never had a range session with my mosin where I didn't have to use quite a bit of force to lift the bolt handle, I would not trust a screw in method in any way shape or form. I could be wrong, but just the fact that you're screwing a bolt handle on is just asking for trouble in my opinion

However, if you have some know how and are able to modify the bolt yourself, or there's a few places available online where you send them the bolt body and they do the bent bolt handle conversion for you, you can take a decent shooting mosin and turn it into a faux sniper. There's some cheapo PU reproduction scopes out there:

But I can not attest to the quality of this scope or mount combo. Or you could go the slightly more expensive route and look into an original PU scope. Classic Arms just got a bunch of authentic PU Scopes in stock.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

I use this one on one of mine. Look to see if the rear site has 2 pins that hold the rear site in place. If it does, this will work on the 91-30. Use your pistol scope of choice.

I also use this cheap scope. It is a NC Star scope, but it has held for thousands of shots. The only bad thing is the cross hairs are really thin.

I honestly believe the best option is to admit that the time has finally arrived to teach the boy how to use iron sights effectively.

He's never going to be a truly effective marksman until he can do that.

Even a relatively cheap M-N deserves enough respect to deal with it as it is, rather than cobbling up some kluge that allows the boy to evade learning a useful skill. I think that kind of respect is worth learning for a young shooter.

+1

Teach the boy the fundamentals, how to use iron sights and safe practice before anything else.

If he gets a firm foundation in these, everything else follows....

PS..include shooting off hand and with a sling too!

I'm with tommy UTG or Leapers on factory dovtail. Remove the rear sight and mount it. Dremel a small notch and pin it. It will stay.

If you want a no smith type of mount http://www.jmeckscopemounts.com/

but it does need to have a turned bolt, just buy the bolt body and use the bolt head and other parts from your bolt.

Other than that, I started my 10 yo twins with a VZ-24 7x57 carbine. They are still cheap and since they are a carbine, has a nice LOP. You can add a Lyman 57 SME on the side and make for easy irons. 37 gr of H4895 and a Nosler 120 BT and you have a rifle a youngn' can shoot all day with confidence. http://www.imrpowder.com/PDF/Youth%20Loads.pdf
