Rifle Scopes Whats up with people buying tascos

Ok you guyd are smarter than me, I see hide members buying tascos ive believed since theyve stopped making em in japan there now all chicom crap, am I wrong? I used to own one but its been soooooo long ago I dont remember how good the glass was although I recollect thinking my nikon that replaced it was far superior, are there good tascos out there and ive missed it somehow?

Many people don't understand what a high dollar scope does, that a tasco doesn't.

The answer is a generally poorly educated consumer base that buys on nothing but price point alone, blissfully ignorant of the facts that you get what you pay for and that some people need far more than a paper towel tube with some bailing wire run down the middle for crosshairs!

I suppose shooting in itself is an expensive hobby no doubt on that. And you cannot stop people from acquiring this hobby and its not limited to rich people only. So all in all every financial segment needs to be satisfied.

Some people shoot only TULA & Brown Bear. Then there are those who only shoot Hornady and Black Hills. Hope it answers your main question

thanks for the help, lmao its hard to type and spell check when holding a 6mo old. And there are some nice nikons, monarch on up are nice although im thinking its time to move up. Been checking out meopta, minox, I seem to prefer schott over LOW glass but im sure the polish and coatings are equally or more important. Wish I could afford uso.lol

I was one of the poor saps running tasco...then oh wow stepped up too barska..blaaah!!! But hey it was the best I could afford at the time unless I waited a few years to get any better...I finnaly did a bit better(I hope) and got a leupold mark 4.... gotta get a mount for it but just looking in the glass and getting a feel for the turrets..I see what ive been missing. Not my dream scope by any means but an aprovement for sure...we all gotta live by our means and still be abke to enjoy our passion/ hobby

I see it a lot. Especially at matches. People buy what fits their budget and their percieved level of need. All my short range hunting scopes (300 yards and closer) all wear 3-9 leupolds. So what, they do the job.

Now, when I need 100% reliability 100% of the time, for long range hunting or whatever, I run a higher end scope. Has been Nightforce till I traded it off for another equally reliable scope.

Until that Tasco fails on them, they will use it. When it DOES fail, they will buy Simmons cuz that Tasco is just crap. After about 10 scope failures, they may step up to Leupold.

If you feel so strongly about it, put them behind your glass at dusk or at dawn, and then let them decide whats best.

Enjoy! (no, I am not angry or slinging mud. Just meerly stating what the likely scenario is)

A fellow at my gunclub brings his daughter to our local long range match. They both have countersnipers on their rifles, and just from pulling their targets, I can tell those scopes don't track so well.

Makes me feel bad, honestly. That girl (probably 14 or 15 years old) is actually a fine shooter. I've considered loaning a spare NF I've got laying around to her to see what she can do.

Her rifle is a good solid performer - a Steyr SSG69, just needs a solid optic.

I understand not everyone can afford high end glass, and there are a couple guys using cheap scopes and I don't really give a shit about that, but I hate seeing this young shooter being held back by poor equipment.

I have 2 Tasco 3-9X32 scopes made in Japan that are still in use and work flawlessly. On is on an old AR 15 the other on a Ruger No 1 in 45/70. I bought them over 35 years ago and both are crystal clear and track well. How ever the days of a decent Tasco scope are gone. About 25 years ago I graduated to Leupold scopes then 7 years ago to Nightforce and recently added a Vortex PST FFP. A Nightforce it isn't, despite the great warranty I should have stuck to Nightforce.

This is what I don't get.

I see guys with spec'd out rifles that they spent a ton of money on and then they stick a shit scope on it. Now if you have one rifle that you broke the bank on like a dumbass that's one thing but if you have 3-4 rifles each worth 2k+ dollars...why have 100$ scopes on each one?

First, Tasco doesn't manufacture anything. It is all done under contract through someone else.

Second, the original Super Sniper was made by Tasco. SWFA bought the rights to it and turned the line into the SS series scopes.

I've had cheap Tasco scopes on cheap guns. I've had not so cheap Tasco scopes as well (Japan Titans) that were pretty decent, still have one mounted on a 16" NEF 308. And I'm currently on the fence as to weather I buy another or pay twice the price for a LPVO that's made in China. My life don't depend on it, and I'm getting older, so it doesn't have to last too long to outlive me.

I’ve got a nib crossfire ii sitting on my desk right now. It is a replacement from Vortex, and arrived last night, so it hasn’t been opened yet. I haven’t decided if I’m going to open it. I do have a rifle without a scope, but the eye box on the crossfire is annoyingly tight and fiddly, even for a mid range magnification scope. You’ve got to be dead-square behind it or you get shadowing on the edges. I have a viper pst gen 1 on my match rifle and it is worth the extra cost, even when there wasn’t a gen 2. I don’t know, maybe I’ll do some scope swapping on the rifles and this one will get some use...

A friend of mine is frugal when it comes to scopes and rings. In the past three years at least five scopes have failed. Barska, Tasco Millet Pinty?
Last outing he had a scope ring with a stripped nut and was using washers as spacers.
He argues that neither bullet jump nor brass brands make a difference in accuracy. My argument is that his equipment cannot discern the difference.
I let him use some of my rifles yet he rather "save" money by shooting budget gear.

Hey again my bad this aint the rimfire thread i was readin. so i not looking for scope advice for centerfire but rimfire 22lr. the cz457 royal is a 20 inch rifle for 750 bucks. so if any rimfire folks are out there a suggestion pleeze. maybe if i get good enough 200 yards.

For the money I paid for the pst gen 1, you can get into a pst gen 2- and find a used or new old stock gen 1 for significantly less. To be honest, I’m not buying scopes in the crossfire price range any longer. Don’t think that because you’re shooting a rimfire that you won’t benefit from a good scope. Our match shoots out to 250, most substantially closer, and every top tier scope you see on match centerfire rifles, you will see on these rimfires. Treat yourself to a top tier scope, you’ll be happier and won’t remember the cost after a month...

@im55in012 Start with features and let the money work itself out. You’re going to be doing a lot of dialing with a 22 out to 200. 10 mil turrets make that more convenient. Parallax down to 25 yards or less, because 22. Do you want a capped windage? Illumination? What reticle? I like a Christmas tree, but ymmv. 22 targets may be close, but they’re small. Better glass is better.

Both of my 22s are topped with 6-24x50 scopes that were in the ~$1000 range 5-10 years ago. I would not feel over-scoped if I put my markV on my match 22. At a match a couple of years ago, I saw a guy with his young (like 6 or 7) daughter shooting- she was rocking a savage rascal single shot rifle with a nightforce ATACR scope. I know, because I zeroed it for them...

Spend what you can afford. You can always make more money, and good equipment holds its value.
