Maggie’s What's Your View II

We absolutely did it. We also shot "hoppergrass" heads (plantain) at each other.

Oh ya, still do this. Can't believe a couple friends of mine, same age, had never even heard of this. Good lord.

Now then, has anyone ever seen how ya catch a "Virginian"? Well it's actually pretty simple. And no, not this Virginian

Yep, that's my ugly schnoz, sporting a new perforation from a canine tooth. It could've been a LOT worse: I felt the dog go stoopid a millisecond before it happened so I got most of my face out the way. I've been warned about sticking my nose where it doesn't belong, add a dog's mouth to that list of places.

And 1J04, nice try on the natural bait, but from recent pictures it appears the Virginian is hitting on artificial these days.

Our mature Transparent apple tree under attack by Japanese Beatles. Transparent apples are used here solely for homemade applesauce. I've treated twice now in 2 weeks with a fruit tree insecticide (even closer together than the label recommends) but fear I've lost the fight. My view today...with me waving my white flag faster than the French.

Sevin them little bastards.
I use the liquid form.
Make it a little strong for application.
Sounds like rain when they drop dead.

Propane Boy: Not near enough meat on that hook for me, and I do have a RBF look about me. Been that way for a long time. I think it started the day that fucking firecracker went off in my hand.

Nichols: Sevin is the way. Bastards were destroying our canas until I nuked them Saturday. Back to blooming now.

BB: Damn! I thought a hook in the finger was bad, but I feel better now. Oh, and you are not a nose model, are you? Is the dog still alive, or can we talk about that?

Brother, there ain't no part of me "model worthy" other than as a cautionary tale of how NOT to live. My beak has taken so much abuse that a dog bite could only make it prettier. It could've been a lot worse, I made a mistake and paid a relatively small price. If my reflexes had been just a touch slower I shudder to think of the holes that would've been in my face. I did my own first aid, so as long as it doesn't get infected I'll count my blessings.

If I make it the rest of the fishing season without a treble hook in my body I'll count it as a success.

I'm doing this just to keep the hapless from fucking it up completely in MS Paint.

For whom is this scallywag you speak of ole Yule Brenner Wanna Be Hump Hump Portegee Sailor Bar Boy. lmfao

Nice job man. I so wanted to do something along these lines but neh, I fail a lot so I didn't.

Bogey you poor bastard but lets hope the dog doesn't get rabies for christ sake. :p

Third cast this morning. 2 pound bass....

Mistakes made. Lessons learned.

T1OhwvQ.jpg

Mistakes:

1. Not leaving enough slack in the line while trying to the fish off.
2. Not having my pliers.
3. Going fishing when I should have been snoozing on the couch.

After I got the fish off and released back to the pond I snipped the line and retreated to the house.
Used the side cutters and snipped the hook so I could pull it the rest the way through.
I thought my wife was gonna faint as she watched me do that, but it really wasn't that bad.

I did the same thing when I was a teenager...on my sister's wedding day. My mom wanted to cut it out with a razor blade, but i wasn't having any of that. My best friends dad ended up taking me to the emergency room to get it out. He entered and parked where the ambulances are supposed to park. When confronted by security, my friends dad told them i was snake bit and didn't have time to park. That was good enough for them.

Did you bite him back? ;)

Yeah, there's got to be more to this story...

I was teasing him a bit. I'm not sure, but I beleive Bogey trains dogs (military/police type) for a living. Type A personality type puppy's that would just as soon tear you a new one, given the opportunity. You and I better stick to our 120/140's at our age ;)

Well, he used to but not now, so...;)

(edit: at least I don't think he is now?)

As far as me, it's still my job to attend to their medical needs, including the local LE dogs. However, the worst ones are just aggressive-breed dogs owned by irresponsible idiots who think a vicious dog is cool and they have no control over them whatsoever. Discipline may be unpleasant and disagreeable to a dog, but try inserting a fecal stick if you really want to measure their fuse-length.

Thanks for the unwarranted benefit of the doubt. Yes, I was a K9 handler, trainer, and kennel master, amongst a number of other dumb professions. Up until a few weeks or so ago I was training service dogs for disabled vets. This was a rescue dog that a friend of a friend of a friend had just adopted. The dog is less than 2yrs old and on its 3rd owner. That should've been a clue in itself.

I took a lot of the dog's craziness as being owner-induced and gave it too much credit. I never make that mistake with humans, but have a soft side for dogs. In this case it cost me a little pride and a bit of blood. The hole inside my nostril where the lower canine tooth got me is a much bigger nuisance, but there's a limit to the pics I'd subject y'all to.

Here, bogeybrown, have a little salve for your wound. Someone was acting terribly adorable just a little bit ago with her favorite stinky elk remnant.

Does it whistle when you exhale ?

(sorry, had to do it, couldn't help myself......).

I knew a guy many years ago that had similar experience, went up and shoved his face into a sleeping (temporarily) Borzoi.....seriously re-arranged his landscape.

Thanks gents. For spending as much time as I have with asshole dogs, this was long over due.
One of those cases where I was dumb enough to do it but smart enough to (mostly) get away with it. I'd be recovering from reconstructive surgery right now if it weren't for my finely tuned sense of "oh shit", developed over decades of doing dumb shit.

I'm happy to report that it isn't whistling when I breathe and my gf had mostly gotten over her desire to insert a piercing.

Veer, it's tough to see in the pic, but is that a Cane Corso devouring the elk?

Only an MWD handler would recognize the "stealth" version, but yes, she is. No ears, no tail, the idiot we got her from didn't even have a "D" game, let alone a "B" one. We paid the price, though, as she's an epileptic. Mommy will have us eking out an existence in a KOA before she gives up on her, that's for sure.

In the midst of an Iowa weather pattern that does not appeal to me. Daytime temps in the mid to high 80's, low 90's with 80-85% humidity. No thanks. So, my mind drifts back to early December. Cool, crisp air, shooting "range" is open, and sunsets like this one...

Dry creek fire up here in Washington near Mt. Adams was less than 3 miles from the farm. Started out in a clear cut in about a 2 acre area and grew to 80 acres the first day then up to 500 acres the next day. It jumped the line and went across the road and they shut down the highway for a few days. Luckily for me the wind was blowing north toward Mt. Adams/Trout lake other wise I would have been in serious trouble. 3 helicopters and several planes have been dropping on the fire fire for 3 days.

We are still on a level one evacuation level so I had to pull out my stuff into my trailer just in case, what a pain. Looks like they finally have a handle on it, I hope.

Got a little concerned when the cattle started to hang out next to house in the middle of the day, they are wild as hell and don't like people and especially don't like my dog.

The wind in the gorge is great for kite boarding and shooting in but sucks for any fires.

If her temperament is good, then at least you're even on the game. There's a lot of shitty dogs that look cool.

2ndamendfan, I sincerely appreciate the compliment. There's got to be a benefit to all the pain we old bastards wake up with every day.

Thought I'd take the "Vainess" to a whole new level. Pics? Ha !! That's for amateur's. Had to scoot over to Astoria for another shot of Mojo in the back and a little PT for good measure. Beautiful day so I thought I'd take ya along starting at Knappton as we're dropping down to the Columbia where the old Knappton Mill was. I wanted video of the trip all the way over the Bridge, but no, it peter'd out on me. Epic fail.

Got home just in time to meet my buddy on my porch wanting to knock out some 185 Berger's for his 300WM when our buddy Doug came by with the Self Loader to grab some Pulp Logs.

Nothing special, just thought I'd share if anyone's so inclined...........

Pretty country Decoy! Be safe.

Well our best chance for rain this week came and went with damned little to show for itself. It is DRY here in paradise. The grass is turning brown and the pond is dropping a half an inch a day.
Shit happens every year. Thunderstorms blow up to our West and look promising, only to shrivel and die before they get here.
Oh well, It's just another couple of thousand dollars in seed and fertilizer in the Fall. It's not like I'd rather spend the money on a nice firearm or a decent bottle of single malt.

We did get SLIGHTLY lower temps and humidities (don't have to chew your air to inhale it today), so I took some time do a bit of fishing, no first aid required, and then go to tidying up around the pond a bit.
Captured a couple of big-eyed chickens lurking in the shade of the hickories after lunch.

A hearty lunch, a cool couch, and I'll see you when I see you.

It's something I haven't tried yet. My concern is that its primary function of keeping the house cool might be compromised in an extended drought.
I am going to add a coupling to the overflow and then cut it off at a level about 3 inches higher than it was originally. That should give me a considerable amount more water at full pool, but that won't likely happen until this Fall sometimes, unless there is a hurricane.
I'm mulling the irrigation options. I'd want something installed and put on a timer. Not into dragging hoses and sprinklers around.

That makes sense: As you lose volume the pond becomes more sensitive to temperature fluctuation, affecting your Geothermal system. No way to plumb off of your well for irrigation?

I love a lush, green lawn as much as the next guy, BUT, a mid July lack of rain slows the nonstop mowing which I'm ok with. Enjoy the pond and let the grass crunch under your feet. It's not dead, just dormant. The cool fall rains will green it right back up.

I got back out there this morning and finished the cleanup. There was about 50 yards of banks that I didn't do yesterday.
Once I finished running the weedeater I did a little fishing.
As I was making around the pond I came to a spot where there was a LOT of buzzing noise. A careful investigation showed that I had somehow managed to weedeat over a nest of yellow jackets and somehow managed to get through there without a single sting.
Counting my blessings on this one. I'll check them out near sunset and see if I can find there they're going in, then deliver a care package.

Find them my friend, and terminate with extreme prejudice. No quarter.
