Gunsmithing When Gunsmith Won't Return Call or Email

Nice to here the OP got his rifle in time, but I have to believe this Internet pressure might have had something to do with it.
I'm sure the smith wanted to get it done and be done with this customer.
On a personal note, I will not be so easily sucked in to a thread like this in the future.

I doubt the IP pressure had anything to do with it but who cares. I know for a fact that he could have shuffled things and got it done a week early but why?

I'm not buying your sucked in perspective. You know you loved every minute and every laugh.

Layton, I can tell you RJB is just a wanna be friend. Mark lets him hang out and it makes him think he has friends. He tried his hand at being a gunsmith maybe he will tell us just how many guns he is buiding today, none for pay.

You would think the way he talks he has people tearing down his door to get a gun done by the friend of a national championship shooter. Don't we all want a gun built by a loud mouth bragget who happens to think he has friends?

I hope the op got his rifle he will enjoy shooting it.

WTF???? All I hear is crickets.????????????

At least layton has the balls to manup

Read the thread. He's a one man shop. Funny thing is gunsmithing trashes all the rules in sales. "the customer is always right" I've told many where the door was. There are always 2 holding the door open for the guy that leaves mad.

I understand the desire to defend the smith given his limited resources, but you can't fault the customer for simply 'inquiring' as to how he should handle a situation the smith created by dodging his customer's legitimate interest in the status of his project. The customer thought he had entered into a contract with a "professional". Knowing the ins-and-outs of every firearm ever made, and being able to assemble a tack-driver with your eyes closed does not make someone a "professional". A true "professional" conducts his business by acknowledging a customers repeated appeals. I don't think it's too much to follow up with an e-mail saying, "it's on track for delivery on X" or "it's going $#!77Y, it won't be done for a while".

Lesson to the smith: avoidance is not a profitable business strategy. Act professionally.

I think if you go back and read my posts you will see my comments were based strictly on the aspect of the contract terms
and not of a personal attack nature.
No enjoyment taken, just stating some facts.

I know you were not attacking. I was just hoping you got a laugh or 2 out of this thread. If you didn't, you need a vacation as much as I do.

Lesson for Mark, pick better friends. The ones he has can cost him money, maybe they are lined up now, one day that will not be the case. I hope RJB is not trying to tell us something about what happen when they get to "ole boying it around the shop" but you know I maybe that's it.

RJB you win, but you have caused your friends reputation to come into qestion with your comments, I know I will think long and hard before he builds me another rifle!

Disclaimer: Not all Texans are idiots like RJB!

Thanks for the chuckle!

Lesson for Mav. Mark and I are not friends. We are brothers in arms. Some day you might become as intelligent as my dogs and you will understand that becoming a top notch smith is like learning to ride a bicycle. Once it happens it never goes away and neither does the customer base.

"I hope RJB is not trying to tell us something about what happen when they get to "ole boying it around the shop" but you know I maybe that's it".

I can't believe you would even go there. Maybe you should hop out of Layton's happy wagon before it's too late.

I'll be the first to admit I'm an idiot. Geography has nothing to do with it. Genius has it's drawbacks.

Not sure if anybody is interested at this point, but I picked my rifle up today from the smith. It is a beautiful thing. I'm very happy with the end result. Of course, I haven't shot it yet but certainly don't anticipate being disappointed. Since my issue was "communication" and NOTHING ELSE, I want to let you know that in my book, all's well that ends well and I would use this smith again if he'd have me.

Friend as I stated early "all you have done is lost a good smith to work on your gear"

I doubt very much if he will entertain you as a customer again, what you did here was completely uncalled for.
Still your fear ruled your head
Hope the rifle is a hammer, enjoy it. Doubtful he will ever build you another

So the only person you fraked, was your self

Enjoy

I think this sums up this thread for myself, and many others who hadn't ever even heard of the gunsmith in question. To the disappointment of RJB, gunsmithing is a fairly simple task with fairly simple machining involved. Also, while you may think your friend is a big time smith, I can assure you there are many many more out thee who are much more well known and do much more work. It isn't difficult at all to find a gunsmith that can turn out a product capable of 1/4 moa and provide good customer service while doing so. I know if I were looking for a gunsmith (I'm not because I do my own work) your comments would eliminate any chance I use your friend.

rifle barrel fitting, simple machining, sure. gunsmithing, i'm not so sure if "simple" is the correct term. remember, there is far more to gunsmithing than machine work.
You're right. There are some tasks that are much more difficult. The big name guys can do it all and do it all well. I was attempting to make the point that there are many quality smiths out there that produce a great product and value their customers.

One of my favorite things is when someone comes into the shop with one of those "fairly simple" home machining jobs or maybe one of thos super simple AR-15 "builds." It's all simple...

Guess you missed this post Cheetah. Look on page 2

You're just glad to have a coattail to hang on to, you are so proud he lets you sweep the floor and carry out the trash you forgot your not smart enough to be his spokesperson.

It's hard to believe a 30 year old guy would make the statements you have made, little less one older. Maybe that's the reason you couldn't make it as a gunsmith, but you do get to claim one as your friend!

By the way I know the smith well, I didn't know he was popular here. I will give him a call and see if he would like to build me another rifle, better yet I will let you, his spokesman make that decision for both of us!!!!
Good try mav.

I'll nibble but I won't bite. You don't even know what a gunsmith is. A monkey could be taught to do what "rifle builders" do. I am a gunsmith. That requires a little more than machinist skills.

As far as you f'ers opinion of customer relations goes is laughable. Every one of you shining examples of the perfect business models pound your chest about rolling out the red carpet for every knock on the door. I guarantee you all have PITA customers that don't get the treatment that the good ones get. Hypocrites!

Must be your day to drive Layton's happy wagon. Please be smart enough to admit you are a dumbass. Read read this part.

I don't think making 2 posts on this thread constitutes trying to get the last word.

You don't think much at all do ya? Both post were the last word at the time not to mention off topic.

This thread should have died a long time ago. If you can't contribute to the theme of the thread just let it go.

Your insults are just feathers in my cap!

Why the hostility, rgb?
If this thread should have died long ago, why don't you let it go, and stop making personal attacks.

Hostility???????????? Personal attacks??????????????????????? Seems like you are attacking me. I think the membership forbids this and you are the one that won't let it go. But who plays by the rules? Simply stating the facts.

Since its' obvious you don't think much I'll let it slide but just to keep things on topic I'll edit my post to add 'bunch of stupid'

My reason for making the statement of last word is that you continue to call everyone names that dont agree with you! Off topic maybe a little bit but yet you go just as off topic with attacking everyone else before and after OP said he had no problems with said smith personally or the quality of work(which thanks to you is pretty disliked by some of those that have figured out who he is again thanks to you). OP like many others before him was asking for some advice by others that have dealt with this and surprise to you there are others that deal with the public and do it well no matter how busy they are. Im glad we are not pals and you are taking up space in my shop because you are not a very good PR person. One more thing in most all your posts on thiz thread you call someone a name that is where people see the hostility from you.
Mods Im sorry if you feel this is way too "off topic" for what RJB says but I wont say another word...he can have the last one!

RJ. Only seven more posts and you'll be able to sell some shit!

I see where you are headed. I don't sell shit, Buyers beware!!!!!!!

Note; Back in the day when I was going toe to toe with Nobody and CKA I had 11 or 1200 posts so I think if I wanted to advertise an item for sale I think the ad would fly.

As to why I got bumped back to 50 posts is beyond me. I'll leave that investigation to someone that gives a damn.

PM didn't work so I'll try this.

Waaaaa Waaaaaa Waaaaaaaaaaa Fraaaaaannnk, Brenneman said I wear pink panties. Not name calling but it amounts to the same.

Glad to hear this thread has flooded your shop with work.

I'm still waiting for one of you to grow some balls and admit my argument is valid.

If your shop passes the red carpet test. Please let me know where it is so I can visit and observe a perfect business model.

Whats that RJB? Dont like it when some one wont answer an email? You are whining about the exact reason for this thread...because I didnt respond to your email right away and your not even my customer!!

I went to PM because I thought your previous last post was your last.

"Mods Im sorry if you feel this is way too "off topic" for what RJB says but I wont say another word...he can have the last one!"

You naysayers are nothing but a bunch of overachieving progressives. Please put down your copy of rules for radicals for a minute and try to understand this.

I am not condoning his failure to communicate but merely offering a possible justification.

If you can't coax your simple minds to grasp this concept, PLEASE do the rest of us a favor and refrain from voting.

You are right I should have left it at that post but when you PM me and then...get this everyone...3 hours and 4 minutes later say pm didnt work. Really? Well like you are telling all of us "Fers" that maybe he has a life or is too busy to answer emails...take your own advice pal!! This is MY weekend now and I have my Daughter so I apologize I didnt PM you back 37 seconds after you sent yours to me!

Sounds good Mr Alinsky but your screen name had the little green light next to it during said time.

Glad to hear you are trying to be a Dad. My prayers are with your daughter. I wish she had a better role model.

Back to the topic, any charge on my claim that everyone favors good customers over PITA costomers?

On topic dick...you ever say a thing about my being a good role model for my kid or trrying to be a good dad...you are a scum that prob sits in his dirty chair pickin fights online in his underwear wishing he wasnt a virgin! You want to whine about being attacked to the mods go ahead because we can all see now what type of person you are...say what ya want about me as a person but you dont say shit about me being a good father...you dont know me...and not only that when I responded to your email and made my post your little light was on too yet yoh had to wait for what 47 minutes?

Mods if you feel im out of line im sorry ban me if you must everyone else on this thread Im sorry for letting this...whatever ya call it get me upset like this but he is a person most of you will look down on and some may not your choice.

You're pretty astute. Please be clear in understanding that I'm not his spokesperson and all of my posts and comments are mine. More than likely he would regret telling me about this thread if he had time to read my comments. I stand by the dumbass and telling customers like you to fuck off. After going through this for over 30 years I guess it's gotten to me. I've had thousands of people like you call call and call and when I finally get it done, they don't pick it up for a month. Sorry to have gotten under some of you guys skin but I like it and Thanks for letting me.

I don't pick fights but I certainly call out folks that post wrong info and certainly defend myself when I'm attacked. Especially when the attack has nothing to do with the topic of the thread. Grin!

The level of immaturity that some will sink to is amazing. Personal family attacks are crossing the line BIG TIME. This thread needs to die and someone needs to grow the fuck up.

I come to this site for ideas and technical knowledge. Not this kind of BS.

Personal family attacks??? I simply stated that I pray for his daughter for a better role model. You are not helping this thread die.

Seems you don't understand how this works. If the thread you are reading doesn't give you ideas or technical knowledge just go to the next one. Don't stop and take a shit. It only reflects in the mirror.

I'm still waiting for someone to rebut my argument about favoring good customers over PITA customers.

It's been a long time but I thought that's what this whole thing started about.

Yes I took that as a personal family attack!! Take your advice and let it die!!! The rebutle for your good over PITA customers, yes we all have had them both good and bad some suck to deal with more than others but in the end you provide a service for a paying customer. If you want to continue being able to provide said service then you need to provide good customer service it takes ten good words to get rid of one bad and if a person continues to say screw them they are a pain in the ass then you will end up with no business. I built houses for many years and I have had some crappy customers and some that are great but you still have to treat them all well! If someone is plunking down several thousand dollars they deserve the product they ask for and in a timely manner! OP simply wanted to know how his build was coming along and would get no return call/email whether its a week after it was to start or a week before the build was to be done he deserves a simple return email of either Its on time or its been delayed X number of days. Just like if you go into a big box store you expect service and if you get poor service you complain but they dont tell you to piss off you are a pain in the ass! There is your rebutle now you can act like Piers Morgan and get your last word in because we know you will and YOU just cant let it die!

This is exactly why you damned yankees have such a bad rap in the south. 1st you attack me for no reason. Then you get pissed at me because you are not smart enough to understand what I'm saying.

"Personal family attacks??? I simply stated that I pray for his daughter for a better role model."

As I said earlier, He will ride the wave form his shooting accomplishments to the end of a long prosperous smithing career. Try to comprehend this. In the current environment, Much Thanks to your leader, anyone in the gun buis. is flourishing.

Down here, natives handle this kind of thing by our selves. Only yankees or their descendants take to the internet for moral support.

OP should have gotten into his Prius and driven (w/a few charging stops) over and payed the dastardly smith a visit. Sorry Sweets.

Hopefully you get my point. This whole thing could have been avoided if a little patience and common sense had been thrown in the mix.

Let' all just admit that rgb is the smartest man in the room and let him live in his delusions.

Been to tx quite abit, hell lived their for almost six months. There are some real good folks down there, but of all the idiots i have come across quite a few were in Texas. Load mouthed, braggarts with a pretty good dose of self righteousness. In the end it takes all kinds to make the world go around.

This comes off as mildly retarded at best. I work with a former seal who drives a prius, exactly what does OP's car have to do with anything? You need to calm down. Ironic that you talk about "yankee's and their descendants" taking to the internet for moral support when I'm betting in person you aren't quite as much of a badass as you are on an internet forum bashing people.

ETA: Shame on you for bringing someone's child into this, I'd like to see you act like such a tuffy and say some BS like that in person instead of on the internet, you'd probably be having an asthma attack in fear of having your chubby butt handed to you if you happened to say something like that out loud.

I'll take bids to pay this Internet bad ass a visit....(edit. I'm just kidding of course... can't be losing my job over some idiot)....but If he said something about my parenting in my presence, he'd be choking on his teeth. I have serious doubts he would do that though. I'm starting to think he might be a 14 yr old child.

Back by popular demand. Grin! Speaking your mind does have drawbacks but I've never let them hold my tongue.

This is my version of a prius. Runs on waste motor oil. Turns carbon footprints into carbon sootprints. It also doubles as a solid yard sign anchor.
