True story... When I joined the Navy, my home address was my dad's in Arkansas. After being in the Navy for 2 years, it occurred to me that Arkansas was not my state of residence, and even my dad wasn't living there at the time. Yet, I was paying state income tax (deducted from my paycheck). So, I asked the Purser's office how I could stop paying Arkansas taxes. They told me to simply establish residence in another state (that doesn't have such taxes). How to do that? Register to vote in that state and establish an address. Well, my grandparents lived in Florida, which is where I was planning to go eventually, anyway. I also had a family reunion coming up.
So, I went to the reunion and asked my grandmother if she could take me to register to vote. My grandmother and great aunt came along. Both were Jewish (originally from NY).
I walked up to the counter and the clerk asked me, "Republican or Democrat?" When I answered, "Republican," I heard my grandmother and great aunt (about 10 feet behind me) AUDIBLY GASP! LOL! The ride back was quiet.
Yep... I'm a black sheep in the family. Wait... can we still say "black sheep?"
