Which BiPod and Mount do you preffer?

I am a proud new parent of a Colt AR15.

I have been getting into shooting, and only have a few things. I have the gun, and thats it (some extra clips and a ton of ammo, but thats it).

I know the range i will be shooting at, and I know I will need a shooting mat, and a bipod, and later - optics.

For now, lets stick to bipods.

I have been reading online a lot about ballistics, MOA, MIL's and found out, the scope I planned on getting turned out to be exactly what NOT to get.

It kind of scared me I almost dropped $600 on a scope that I wouldnt have been happy with. Hense the research.

Well now I am wondering what about the other equipment i want. I quickly realized that this site had more knowledgable shooters than say AR15.com, its like everyone who graduated from that site is now here. Anyway, i WAS under the impression that a Harris bipod with a La Rue mount is "hands down best thing you can get, you are retarded if you buy something else, ect....blah blah blah"

I read somewhere on here that La Rue mounts can wear down your rail, so now I am parranoid about that. I want to keep my gun looking like it just came off the shelf, It will not see dirt, water, ect.... this baby is a SAFE QUEEN.

But what do you guys preffer? What bipod is best? what mount is best?

I dont mind spending a little more if i get it back in return.

I dont want a QD mount that will wear down my rails or even worse get loose or wobble when i try to shoot.

I do need QD mount, if you can recommend any, please do. The QD is a must, the rifle MUST be able to break down quickly.

And can someone explain what is wearing the rail? and if you suggest a mount, tell me why it doesnt wear the rail, please. I am totally new to shooting and I need all the info you can give me, think baby steps.

Atlas bipod with the ADM QR Mount is what I use, love it and works excellent.

Any quick detach adapter will tend to mar the pic rails to one extent or another. You say the rifle is not going to be a safe queen and see decent use. If so, be prepared for it to get dinged up due to shooting it off barricades etc.

A bipod qd mount will be especially prone to marring the rail due to the pressure that will be applied to it vs other qd accessories like optics, lights etc.

That said, there are a few qd bipod adapters available. LaRue and ADM:

Unless you have your heart set on a true qd mount, you can get one of these for about $15-$20 and just take the bipod (Harris) off/on in about 5-10 seconds.

I use two ADM QD mounts and they are good but they do have a tendency to slip side to side on the surface of the Harris bi-pod mounting plate with a heavy gun no matter how tight they are . I improved horizontal in my groups by epoxy gluing the QD adaptor to the Harris bi-pod . Lock your bi-pod and twist the gun side to side and watch the gap between the QD adaptor and the bi-pod I bet it opens and closes quite a bit . Under recoil this makes the gun twist under the torque of the bullet striking the rifling and track off to one side depending on which bi-pod leg is loaded the most .

It really depends on how much you want to spend. A Harris with a adapter might work well for you and be under $200. A atlas with a ADM QD is more expensive but one of the best bipods out there right now but they run close to $300.


P.S. Welcome to shooting, despite what the movies say and what you hear on the street it is called a magazine or mag but not a clip. Just figured I would let you know now before some asshat goes off on you for calling it a clip.

Atlas with ADM. Expensive, but the QD lets me use it on all my rifles with minimal headache. By the way, shiny new AR's look like crap. Let it see some wear! Also, get some 20 round magazines if you don't already have them. Using 30 rounders with a bipod is a pain in the ass.

While definitely not one of the more popular selections my versapods serve me well. You can get rail adapters etc. All my rifles have some kind of versapod spud on them and thus it's simple to transfer the bipod from rifle to rifle very quickly (quicker than some other options). I've been running them for years with no issues.

I run a Harris on 6.8 and it has served me well. I can load the bipod, even in a raised position with no worry of it collapsing. I'm not sure what the Atlas has over the Harris but I'm a happy owner.

Recently switched to a atlas with adm mount and haven't looked back. Well worth the money.

I'd say focus on an optic before you get all the other things. You can easily lay on a thick blanket and you can easily fill a bag with sand for a rest. The good thing is a shooting mat and a Harris bipod are not overly expensive so you can get both for roughly $140-$150.

One of the best things about an AR is their parts are so easily interchangable so don't worry about it getting dinged up. Bolt guns are different but still, its a bit silly to not use it to its fullest potential. You can always paint them. AR's you can just interchange parts.

I have an Atlas and a Harris S model and both are great but each has something I like over the other. The Atlas is a beautiful piece of equipment that allows many different ranges of stance so if you're shooting flat on a mat at a range or on the side of a hill on uneven terrain it really comes in handy. It's very sturdy and the company has amazing customer service. The Harris is also a great piece of equipment but it does not have the different ranges of stance that the Atlas does. What I like about the Harris over the Atlas is the legs extend with the push of a button whereas the Atlas is more of a "pull up on this, push down on that" kind of thing. Not too big of a deal but it is something that lots of others hate.

If I were you, start off with the Harris and focus on good optics. You can always sell the bipod here and upgrade. Not having optics will get old real fast especially when you want to start stretching out past 200-300 yards and standing 50 yards in front of a silhouette poking holes through paper cutouts of Oasam Bin Ladin.

so shooting laying on a mat or on a bench, I have to have 20rd mags?

I wasnt thinking, I bought 4 30rd mags before the gun even came in.

is it a pain in the ass or is it needed? just need a little clarification on that. and we are talking about 6-9" bipods, not 9-13" right?

You can use 30 round mags if the bipod feet are extended past 6 inches. The 20 round mags you can use with 6 inches. Its just a pain in the ass.

Just wondering if all of your shooting will be at a "square" range, why do you want a bipod at all? Why not get a front rest which can be had at all price ranges and its use will not mar your rifle.

And this is no knock on what you want to do or how you handle/keep your stuff. It's just in my opinion a bipod is a light weight "rest" that is useful at a range but shines when away from the range. And if I'm running a bipod away from the range, then I'm using it at the range for the consistency.

Regarding the rail wear from a lever mount, ANY lever type mount that the lever cams directly against the rail, CAN MAR THE RAIL. Without going into all the details, we chose the ADM as it has a long clamp portion that is independent of the lever and is pressed to the rail and held there by the cam-lever pressure which is adjustable for tension without tools.

I like Harris bench rest 6-9" leg notch swiveling bipods mounted directly to a swivel stud in the RAS forend.

Another one for atlas, worth the money. As far as mags go it is nice to have a couple 20rd mags when shooting prone, it gets to be a pain in the butt lifting the back of the rifle up to change mags.

Atlas with ADM QD without a doubt...you may consider changing the rubber feet to something along the lines of spikes depending on your shooting environment...
